A Crucial Window for Child Development
1,000 Days refers to the time from the start of a mother’s
pregnancy until a child turns two years old. Research shows that
children who are undernourished during this period are far more
likely to suffer from long-term health problems, poorer
educational performance, and lower economic prosperity. Every
year, 3.5 million children under five die as a result of causes related
to undernutrition.

Fortunately, proven and cost-effective solutions exist that can
drastically reduce undernutrition. Building from research in The
Lancet medical journal, the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN)
Framework and Roadmap outline a vision for scaling up these
solutions throughout the developing world. Proven interventions
include educating about healthy practices, fortifying foods, and
providing nutritional supplements during the 1,000 day period.
Building a Global Movement
The 1,000 Days effort aims to jumpstart implementation of the
WFP/Alejandro Chicheri
SUN Framework and Roadmap in countries that indicate an
interest in moving forward quickly to combat undernutrition.
SUN stakeholders will support country-led strategies to scale up
nutrition interventions and integrate them across sectors. At the
same time, advocates around the world will raise awareness and
keep undernutrition high on the global agenda.
