Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

Renewed in Grace
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

17. A reading from the book of
Nehemiah
Ezra the priest brought the
Law before the assembly,
18. consisting of men, women,
and children old enough to
understand. This was the first
day of the seventh month. On
the square before the Water
19. Gate, in the presence of the
men and women, and
children old enough to
understand, he read from the
book from early morning till
20. noon; all the people listened
attentively to the Book of the
Law.
Ezra the scribe stood on a
wooden dais erected for the
21. purpose. In full view of all the
people – since he stood
higher than all the people –
Ezra opened the book; and
when he opened it all the
22. people stood up. Then Ezra
blessed the Lord, the great
God, and all the people raised
their hands and answered,
‘Amen! Amen!’; then they
23. bowed down and, face to the
ground, prostrated
themselves before the Lord.
And Ezra read from the Law
of God, translating and giving
24. the sense, so that the people
understood what was read.
Then Nehemiah – His
Excellency – and Ezra, priest
and scribe and the Levites
25. who were instructing the
people said to all the people,
‘This day is sacred to the
Lord your God. Do not be
mournful, do not weep.’ For
26. the people were all in tears as
they listened to the words of
the Law.
He then said, ‘Go, eat the fat,
drink the sweet wine, and
27. send a portion to the man who
has nothing prepared ready. For
this day is sacred to our Lord. Do
not be sad: the joy of the Lord is
your stronghold.’
64. had been brought up, and
went into the synagogue on
the sabbath day as he
usually did. He stood up to
read and they handed him
65. the scroll of the prophet
Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll he
found the place where it is
written: The spirit of the Lord
has been given to me, for he
66. has anointed me. He has
sent me to bring the good
news to the poor, to proclaim
liberty to captives and to the
blind new sight, to set the
67. downtrodden free, to
proclaim the Lord’s year of
favour.
He then rolled up the scroll,
gave it back to the assistant
68. and sat down. And all eyes in the
synagogue were fixed on him.
Then he began to speak to them,
‘This text is being fulfilled today
even as you listen.’
69. The Gospel of the Lord
Praise to you, Lord
Jesus Christ.
70.
71. I believe in God, the Father
almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only
Son, our Lord,
The Apostles’
72. who was conceived by the
Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
The Apostles’
73. was crucified, died and was
buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again
from the dead;
The Apostles’
74. he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right
hand of God the Father
almighty;
The Apostles’
75. from there he will come to
judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
The Apostles’
76. the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen
The Apostles’
