Social media is a means of connections among people in which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and network. This craze for social media has led to a host of question regarding its impact among students behavior particularly in tertiary institution. This paper is set to study the impact of social media among students in tertiary institution in Adamawa State, Nigeria. A 5 likert scale questionnaire comprises of 19 questions was used as an instrument for data collection. 300 respondents sampled from 6 selected tertiary institutions in Adamawa State formed the population of the study. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data. The study revealed that social media has positive impact as well as negative impact on students behavior. The study further recommended that students need to be trained on better usage of social media so as to minimize its misused, School management should train and encourage students on how to use skype and other video conferencing tools to have discussion with lecturers and group members academically.

Social Media is a prominent part of today's life, especially among young people. Unfortunately, the users of social media do not stop to think about the effects it has on their lives. For instance, people are becoming anti-social while they are at the same time desperate to make more friends on Facebook or get more followers on Twitter. People need to know the impact of social media, both negative and positive, rather than just engage blindly. While there are many positive aspects of social media, the negative aspects are equally many. To help make the right choices, this paper will be an analysis of the effects of social media on youths, and how the negative effects can be handled.
This paper will help youths and parents understand the dangers of social media and know the boundaries they should use as they use it. Failure to do so will cause them to fall to varying traps and dangers that will have negative consequences. Social media is one sector of the internet that is greatly used by criminals. On this site, youths get exposed to cyberbullying, online predators and sexting. These dangers should be discussed to let people know their damaging effects and how they can be avoided. Other than the above-mentioned dangers of using social media, there are effects that are rarely discussed. For instance, teens are not aware of the dangers of exposing their address on public platforms. This paper will expose these dangers and many more as well as provide the most appropriate solutions.

Social media is a dissenting topic, especially today. Some people have had the view that social media ruins human interaction not to mention real life human relationships. On the other hand, in the era of everything instant, the idea of living has drastically changed. Initially, people held the idea that life is too hard but with the advancement in technology it has now become a saying that life is easy. All this is attributable to modern technology and equally important globalization, in the sense that people are becoming more independent and interconnected. Social media has changed the world as people used to know it in the sense that people can do everything in an interconnected world that enables instant communication. Some of the most popular social networking includes Facebook, and Twitter among others. Similarly, in this era of social networking people’s idea of reality has greatly changed and people handle such things as relationship differently. This being the case, the objective of this paper is to develop a final prospectus regarding the impacts of social media. Mainly, the paper will focus its attention on the impact of social media and some of the ways that can be used to define the controversy between social media and youths below the 23 years of age.

As mentioned in the discussion, there are many social networks to choose from such as Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram among others. In understanding how social media impacts the youth, it is imperative to look at both the pros and cons of social media on the youth. Essentially social media has reduced the world in a global village which means youths can share and interact easily and instant. Conferring with Ahn (2011), addiction to social media has resulted to poor performance in leaning institutions. Many bright students have resorted to bad behaviours because of social media. Ideally, social media has captured the attention of youths to an extent of not focusing on studies. The issue of mobile phones in learning institutions has invited an endless debate currently. Teachers have complained that students are using phones to connect with their friends and families through such networking sites like Facebook. This idea of using phones in classrooms has deteriorated student performance.
Additionally, youth are so addicted to social media that they do not study at home. Normally, students are supposed to maintain impartiality between social media and studies. This obsession with social media is detrimental to the youth lives. It is estimated that 70% of the district school block have access to social network sites. Nowadays the internet has gained paramount importance in the education arena. The main objective of the study is to identify the impacts of social networking sites (SNS) on growing up adolescent girls in KCC. To identify the nature of browsing the internet, to find out how social sites help to increase the knowledge level, to know the impact of using a social networking site. The study was conducted through a survey research design. For this study, purposive sampling was used. Samples were collected from the 13 to 18-year girls. The total sample size was 100. The average age of using the internet for the first time of the respondents was 17.71 years old. The study shows that teenagers were positively affected as social media helped in increasing their communication abilities, getting information, developing their technical skills, and how they can effectively use this recent technology.

This study was carried out to ascertain the perception of students on the use of social media for
educational purposes. It was conducted in three tertiary institutions in Rivers State. The sample comprised 200
respondents randomly selected from three tertiary institutions in Rivers State. Five research objectives and four
null hypotheses were used for the study. Mean scores, ANOVA, multiple comparison test using schaffer model,
and Correlational Analysis were the statistical tools used in the study. The study found that social media is used
in the study. The study found that social is used for educational purposes in terms of communication, sharing
and exchanging ideas with improved engagement with technology. The study also revealed that social media is
frequently used for interactions with friends for classroom assignment, communication in and outside
classroom, promoting interactions during lectures, promoting informal learning, enhance course grades,
facilitating language exchange, video conferencing, creating room for educational and video sharing. In terms
of attitude of students, respondents generally have favourable attitude towards use of social media. The study
revealed significant differences exist in social media usage across the three universities involved in the study
and significant differences exist in usage of social media between male and female respondents; and in attitude
of students towards social media. Based on these findings, the study recommend that the use of social media
should be incorporated into the curriculum for enhanced universities education.

Descriptive survey research using simple percentage, mean and standard deviation was done using an adapted survey questionnaire which was tested for face and content validity. To obtain reliability, the tool was pilot tested and was proven to be reliable (α = 0.891) using Cronbach‘s Alpha. Based on the gathered data, students spent most of their time in social networking sites whether on a typical day (28%) or weekend (46%) and they usually do this inside their bedroom (46%) or in an internet café (54%) outside. They usually use their mobile phones (76%) to visit social sites and the majority (34%) received less parental support. In terms of the students‘ level of study habit, it was rated average ( x = 3.32, SD = 0.33). This means that the use of social media does not give a negative influence on the study habits of the students in this study. Even if most of them utilized whatever available technology they have such as their mobile phones and they spend most of their time on internet cafés, it was recommended that parental involvement and teachers‘ wise use of technology, pedagogy, and content should be strengthened for these partners still play a significant role in achieving success both in instruction and education.

Abstract: The majority of YouTube users are college students, therefore it's critical to understand their usage patterns,
goals, and any potential psychological and behavioural effects. In order to determine the current trends in YouTube usage
among female undergraduate students in Chennai City, this study will examine the devices used, memberships subscribed
to, purposes used, and identity formation time spent networking, negative impacts experienced, and educational usage.
Data from a survey were analysed with SPSS-Statistic 19.0 software, and the findings were compared to the examined

Social Media
Modern research in social media most frequently revolves around the power of social media on adolescent
people, particularly university or college students. This is because social media controls the youngsters of
today. This study is therefore an apprehensive approach with the influence of social media on the socio-
cultural values of Chennai university female students nowadays the impact of social media changes the
behavior of the youths. It is evident that there exists a relation between society and media. Consequently
messages can reach public and target groups in real time and they can generate changes and tendencies.
The technology improvement leads to young generation grow up having mass contact with different kind
of social media the existing tools of adolescent communication go by a peculiar set of names - Status
updates, thumbs ups, activity feeds, wall post and profiles are some of the ways that youth communicate
with one another today. My Space and Face book, WhatsApp etc., are some of the tool features of social
networking sites (SNS).
The impact of social media is diverse on a youth's life in both ends, sometimes impacts are in the favor of
youth's social life and sometimes the impacts are negative to its users. Social media might seem like fun
for involving young people. Social media impacts both good and bad. It is one of the most important
influence impacting source throughout the world. According to BBC news research (2013) a revelation
has been given that 67% of Face book users are very frequent and well versed in social media comprising
youths and students a major part. So this approves the fact that youth and student have more focus and are
close to social media. The negative use of social media occurs when students involve themselves in
unethical actions on social media portal, sharing of worthless information, and posting images that are
deleterious to national dignity and foreign relationships with our country.
In the view of Boyd and Ellison, (2008), Social media are characterized by a user's skill to create a public
profile which contain demographic and individual information, and is made visible based upon personal
seclusion settings. Social networking sites present a list of who user are connected to within the site and
also give users the potential to observe their connections and the associates of others on the site. These
sites are about the facilitation of relationships and relationships that exist before the link on the site as fine
as relationships that were formed through the social networking site. Speaking on value of social media,
noted that social networking sites can serve up many uses during disaster relief. Social networking sites
can accumulate information in a central position as well as serve as a resource to value the importance of
a disaster during the or crisis. The rising attractiveness of the social media is not separate with the
emergence of the internet, Smart mobile Phones, Mobile internet, and Tablets which have made it feasible
for disaster users to stay online even when they are on the move. The initiate of mobile internet has greatly
improved the ability of users to connect and remain online which in turn makes it potential for them to log
onto any social Network of their choice irrespective of where they might be.
The power of social media on the socio-cultural values of university students psychologists are concerned
about the identity crisis that our present generation may face today. The lives of people, particularly
students, are largely biased by what is posted by other people on their profiles. The behaviors that students
learn are decided more by what their friends do and less by the educations of parents or professors.

in society, as well as ties between citizens and the government. This is essential for new democracies,
because social capital, once created can raise trust between the actors involved (Matthew Alan Placek,
2016)
Social networking enhances a student's sense of community, sharing and collaboration, brings an
additional responsibility and workload, which some students find inflexible and rather "forced" This
technology uses web cams or voice-only software to hold virtual seminars online. This is extremely useful
for collaborations where, the partners live in different parts of the globe. Through the use of social
networking sites students are able to express themselves, communicate and collect profiles that highlight
their talent and experience (Mocha, 2009). According to Konetes and McKeague (2011), "students are
using Facebook and other channels to develop their identities, beliefs and stances on various issues such
as politics, religion, economy and work, as well as to pioneer and develop intimate relationships."

for more meaningful and serious deliberations, and students are using social networking for making
friends, sharing links, online learning, finding jobs to accomplish their economic, educational, political

However, it is not its own technological essential that allows the social media to play important role in
social protest. Rather the inventive use of the social media is a response to aspirations and needs that pre-
exist or at least endure independently of it. This technology must to be apparent as a resource that can be
utilized by social and political movements looking for a communication infrastructure to promote their
cause. By taking a macro perspective on these competing views of cultures, it is possible to view culture
as being differentiated based on characteristics such as history, geography, context, socio-political
systems, values, and behaviors. At this point, a discussion of cultural values can explain how those values
may influence online social networking strategies.

witnessed a enormous use of mobile phones social media like Face book, twitter etc.in the national and
local elections in Nigeria and South Africa respectively, and in the independence Arab countries Tunisia,
Egypt and Libya. There is no doubt Social media due to their participatory, interactive and cost-effective
nature it has become veritable instrument for carrying out election campaigns and other electioneering
activities. Meanwhile, risks and fears of possible abuse and misuse of these technologies in the process
continue to exist.
Researcher Asemah et al (2013) stated that exposure to social media by undergraduate students of Kogi
State University students is high and this has negative effect on their performance. Hence, they also noted
the following recommendations: students should reduce their exposure to social media and pay more
attention to their studies; students, especially those willing to record huge academic success should guide
themselves against the use of social media, the government, schools and other well to do individuals
should encourage hard work by rewarding successful students through scholarship schemes and other
incentives; and the government should consider the possibility of evolving a policy on teenagers' exposure
to social media.

A survey research was through questions, adopting this research method the attitude, opinion and
perception of University students in using social media can be studied also the social media usage and its

The descriptive research was conducted by using the procedure survey method that is a type of
methodology in social science studies.

The population of the study contains the Female of Chennai university students.

collected data was entered at SPSS sheet to analyses the data, to separation the findings and representation

The socio-cultural impact of Social media reveals that internet has made variation in the lives of the users
with regard to speech and increase in the level of knowledge. However, the respondents feel that Social
media has influenced the physical appearance, dressing style and food culture. Internet has increased rather
than decreased socialization with friends and relatives say the study The Study deals with a survey on the
Socio-Cultural impact of social media among University students in Chennai. The social media sources
which are used in the research tool are WhatsApp, Face book, Twitter, YouTube, Skype, and Myspace.
The questionnaire consists of 10 close ended questions while 27 questions are open ended. The survey
was made by this researcher to 150university students. All the participants actively responded to this
questionnaire. The percentage of above average of the questionnaire was 90 percent. The average
participation of the female respondents is greater than the male respondents with 60 percent. The level of
qualification of the respondents varies from masters to PhD programs belonging to Chennai University

Majority of the respondents belong to both urban and rural area. The average age groups who were
contacted by this researcher were between 18-35years. All the data were collected only with students. This
shows that the use of social media is widely used by all segmented students of the society in Chennai
University. The final results of the survey shows that students are widely using social media for their daily
life. It was similarly pragmatic that the use of social media influences social connection of University
Students. This implies that students continue and widen active friendship by being in acquaintance through
communication using social networks. In addition, it was exposed that the use of social media has negative
impact on study culture of Chennai University students. In general, the present study observed that social
media has turn into a mainstream activity and has become a major mode of communication for students.
In conclusion, it is revealed that there are positive and negative influences connected with social media
use by Chennai University Students. Moreover, the social media in the aspect of socio-cultural, most of
the respondents had different of opinion towards social norms, ethics, behavior, cultural so on. However,
based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are proffered.(a) There is necessitate
for types government and policy makers that they should set up technology that will oversee the adequacy
of the content of information existing in social media networks (b) parents should observe and conform
that their children's intensity of indulgence and use of social media (c) Instruction of frequency of
disclosure is advised to stem the negative influences of the social media on students and (d) Students
should be oriented concerning the causes of social media overeat and its social and psychological
implications.
