3. • An electrical substation is a subsidiary
station of a transmission and distribution
system where voltage is transformed from high
to low using transformers.
• Electric power may flow through several
substations between generating plant and
consumer, and may be changed in voltage in
several steps.
4. TYPES OF SUBSTATION
1. INDOOR SUBSTATION
2. OUTDOOR SUBSTATION
3. POLE MOUNTED SUBSTATION
8. – Primary Substations receive power from EHV lines
at 400KV, 220KV, 132KV and transform the voltage
to 66KV, 33KV, 22KV or 11KV
– Secondary Substations receive power at 66/33KV
which is stepped down usually to 11KV.
– Distribution Substations receive power at 11KV, 6.6
KV and step down to a volt suitable for LV
distribution purposes, normally at 415 volts

ON SUBSTATIONS
10. EQUIPMENTS OF SUBSTATION
a). BUS BAR :- In
electrical power
distribution, a busbar
is a strip or bar of
copper, brass or
aluminium that
conducts electricity
within a switchboard,
distribution board,
substation, battery
bank, or other
electrical apparatus.
11. b). LIGHTNING ARRESTER
:- A lightning arrester is a
device used on electrical
power systems and
telecommunications
systems to protect the
insulation and conductors
of the system from the
damaging effects of
lightning. The typical
lightning arrester has a
high-voltage terminal and
a ground terminal.
12. CT & PT :- A current
transformer (CT) is
used for measurement
of alternating electric
currents. Current
transformers, together
with voltage (or
potential) transformers
(VT or PT), are known
as instrument
transformers.
13. ISOLATOR:- It is a
manually operated
mechanical switch
which break the
electrical circuit under
no load conditions.
14. CIRCUIT BREAKER:-
.It is automatically operated switch which breakes the
electrical circuit.
.It can operate on both coditions "No Load" & "Full
Load".
15. TRANSFORMER:- It is
a static electrical
device which transfer
the electrical power
from one circuit to
another by changing
voltage level without
changing frequency.
16. CONTROL PANEL:- It
is the essential part of
a substation which
controls the whole
activity of a substation
from input to output
like tripping,
measurements etc.
17. POWER BANK:- It is
used to supply DC
power to different
small equipments
used in control panel
like protective relays
etc.
