2. • An electrical substation is a subsidiary station of a transmission and
distribution system where voltage is transformed from high to low using
transformers.
• Electric power may flow through several substations between generating
plant and consumer, and may be changed in voltage in several steps.
• A substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and
distribution system. A substation is an assembly of apparatus, which
transform the characteristics of electrical energy from one form to another
1. SUBSTATION
3.
4. 2. CIRCUIT BREAKER
• A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed
to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short
circuit.
• It is used to protect the circuit.
• Circuit breakers works on no load condition.
There are different arc quenching medium:-
• Air blast
• Oil
• SF6 gas
• vacuum
6. 3. PROTOCTIVE RELAY
• The protective relay ensures the protection of circuit from any
damage which might otherwise cause by fault.
7.
8. 4. LIGHTNING ARRESTER
• Lightning arrestor is a device, which protects the overhead lines and
other electrical apparatus via transformer from overhead voltages and
Lightning.
• An electric discharge between cloud and earth or between cloud and the
charge centres of the same cloud is known as lightning.
• No charging or testing operation is required before placing them in
service.
• Lightning arrestors provide protection against travelling waves which
may reach the terminal apparatus.
9. • Lightning is a form of visible discharge of electricity between
rain clouds or between a rain cloud and the earth.
10. 5. BUS BARS
• The bus is a line in which the incoming feeders come into and get
into the instruments for further step up or step down.
11. • THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF BUS BARS:-
a) MAIN BUS BAR
b) AUXILIARY BUS BAR
12. 6. ISOLATOR
• An isolator is a type of switch used in electrical circuit and works on
no load condition.
13. • SWITCHES:-
A switch is used in an electric circuit as a device for making or
breaking the electric circuit in a convenient way.
14. 7. CONTROL ROOM
• In GSS the separate control room provided for remote protection of
132 KV switch yards, transformer, incoming feeder, outgoing
feeders etc.
• The control room is nerve canter of a power station.
Control panel contain :-
Meters
• Control switches
• Recorders
• Measuring instruments
a) Energy meter
b) Frequency meter
c) Wattmeter
d) Voltmeter
15.
16.
17. 8. TRANSFORMER
• A transformer is a device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit
to another through inductively coupled conductor.
• Parts of power Transformer:
a) Core
b) Winding
c) Main Oil Tank and Conservator Tank
d) Breather
e) buchholz Relay
f) Bushings
g) Tap Changing
18. • It is a static device used to step up and down the voltage without
change in frequency.
19.
20. 9. CIRCUIT PROTECTION SYSTEM
It is a panel with different switches (N.O , N.C, toggle switch etc.)
using for protection of circuit.
21. 10. POWER LINE CARRIER COMMUNICATION
Power line carrier communication is used for sending and receiving
information bearing signals over power lines.
22.
23. 11. BATTERY ROOM
• In GSS, a separate dc supply is maintained for signalling remote position
control, alarm circuit etc. There is a battery room which has 55 dc
batteries of 2 volts. Therefore dc power is available for functioning of
control panels.
24. • Battery is the heart of power system control and protection as all the
power system protection equipment and the communication equipment
works on DC supply.
