creation and use of an independent
clause.
1. S + AV = IC
2. S + LV + SC = IC
3. S + HV + AV = IC

Coordinating Conjunctions
All of the coordinating conjunctions form a mnemonic device
called FANBOYS.
• For—connects a solution with a problem (because).
• And—connects two ideas together.
• Nor—negative form of or (means not).
• But—connects two ideas that go against each other.
• Or—connects two choices.
• Yet—connects two ideas that go against each other (the twin
of “but”).
• So—connects a problem with a result.

(FANBOYS).
2. Identify if it is connecting two independent
clauses (IC).
3. Add the comma if there is an IC on both
sides.
