CEO PerspectiveTIMING: 3 minutesPURPOSE: Establish credibility—explain that Microsoft faces challenges in our own industry every day and we use our own products and technologies to adapt to rapid change and increased competition.PRESENTER GUIDANCE: The point of the Microsoft story is to demonstrate that we relate to the process of change and uncertainty, same as our customers. In going through the history of the company, be factual but humble about Microsoft’s achievements and candid about the current competitive environment where we have to prove our continued value in a changing world.KEY POINTS:Leadership is about adapting to change. As CEO, your biggest challenge is recognizing and acting on new challenges before competitors can overtake you.Microsoft understands – our market has changed profoundly, and we’ve had to change with it.Today we’re going to discuss how technology is driving and shaping change, and how Microsoft can empower your organization and your people to master those forces.SCRIPT:At Microsoft we talk to a lot of CEOs. And when we ask them to tell us what keeps them up at night, we frequently hear some variation of this:“I’m worried that some competitor will come out of nowhere with a product that completely transforms our market. I’m not worried about what I know; I’m worried about what I don’t know.”Uncertainty and change. We’re right there with you. We’ve been through the cycles of a fast-moving industry for the past three decades. We’ve seen a world where you had to convince people why they needed a PC because computers were big industrial equipment, not personal electronics, and we helped create a new consumer market with software that everyone could learn and use.We saw a world where businesses were skeptical of trusting their critical data and processes to “personal” computers, but eventually we became a trusted partner of the CIO and a leader in enterprise computing.We saw a world where there was a PC on every desktop, and most of them ran Windows.Now we might be back to the world where people need to be convinced about PCs again – not because they don’t want computers, but because computing power now resides in somany different devices, from smartphones and tablets to TVs and videogame platforms. We’ve seen the IT landscape shift from mainframes to client-server to the Web to the era of continuous cloud services. And we’ve had to shift strategies and evolve at every point.Change comes, whether you want it or not, and you have to adapt or someone else will eat your lunch. Well, our competitors are in our kitchen, and we’re in theirs. We are fighting them with everything we’ve got…. because we understand that past performance and “heritage” don’t buy you anything in today’s environment. The only way to stay ahead of change is to keep innovating, keep connecting with your customers, and keep listening.Fortunately, Microsoft is in a unique position because of what we do and what we make.
