In 2011, when police rescued two sisters suffering from acute depression and paranoia
from their flat in Noida, the details about how they were “starving to death“ had left many
people shocked. But latest data collated by Mobile Mental Health Unit (MMHU) in Delhi, a
first-of-its-kind project in the country , shows such incidents are quite common. MMHU
claims to have identified 229 people suffering from mental illnesses, including acute
depression, paranoia and schizophrenia in the past four years. They were either locked
inside their homes or left homeless. Some of them were professionals, including PhD
degree holders, says Dr Vijender Singh, in charge of MMHU, which was started in 2011 to
meet the treatment gap in the area of mental health.
Experts stress the need to remove the stigma attached to mental illnesses. “We found a
63-year-old retired government servant living in a posh colony with her father (83). She
was deserted by her husband due to mental illness. They had a big house but there was no
furniture or accessories to fulfill the basic needs, for example, kitchen ware. She would
remain without a single clothe even in winter and survive on whatev er her elderly father, a
pensioner, would bring from the market. After treatment, the woman's condition has
improved miraculously and now she visits OPD regularly ,“ Singh added.

Singh said their team received 1,700 calls in four years from various sources--
RWAs, NGOs, individuals and police--informing them about mentally ill
people in their respective areas. “After assessing 878 cases, we found 229
people suffering from severe illnesses. We counselled them, provided
treatment and re-integrated many into the society . Some of them have
resumed work and come to us for counselling,“ Dr Singh added.
Dr Nimesh Desai, director of Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied
Sciences (IHBAS) that runs MMHU, said due to paucity of funds they are
currently using only two ambulances. He said very few people are aware of
this helpline and hence the number of cases is low. “The actual number of
people suffering from mental illnesses who are in need for medical
intervention will be in thousands. There is an urgent need to augment
facilities for early identification of such patients and their rehabilitation to
tide over the crisis,“ he added.

A survey conducted by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on
urban mental health across three cities between 2004 and 2009
revealed approximately 8-10% of population in Delhi (nearly 16 lakh)
suffer from psychiatric illnesses. Experts say the number is likely to go
up further due to disintegration of families as well as lack of social
support and infrastructure to treat them. them.
“IHBAS runs one of the large OPDs in the world for psychiatric
disorders. We get 900 patients daily. But you will be shocked to know
that less than 1% of these patients require admission. Majority are
treated in the OPD. This message has to be spread into the community
to remove the stigma attached to the mentally ill,“ Desai said.
