BJP filing false
complaints, says
Manish Sisodia
New Delhi (Agencies):
Delhi Deputy Chief Min-
ister Manish Sisodia on
Tuesday accused the
BJP of filing false com-
plaints to stall the work
being done by the ruling
Aam Aadmi Party in the
capital.
Sisodia’s comments
came days after Lt Gov-
ernor V K Saxena gave
his nod to the Anti-Cor-
ruption Branch to probe
allegations of irregulari-
ties in the construction
of seven temporary hos-
pitals in Delhi during the
Covid pandemic.
“We are a hardcore
honest government and
we are not scared of any
investigation. The BJP is
filing such complaints to
stop the work being car-
ried out by the Delhi gov-
ernment in various sec-
tors. “This is an old com-
plaint and former L-G
Anil Baijal had dis-
missed it. However, the
new L-G has given a nod
to probe the matter,” he
claimed during a media
briefing.
Mr Sisodia urged Mr
Saxena not to go by the
BJP’s complaints and
ask for complaints of
corruption from the gen-
eral public. BJP MP from
Northeast Delhi Manoj
Tiwari, who had com-
plained about the matter,
had alleged the Arvind
Kejriwal government
had passed tenders
worth Rs 1,216 crore to
construction seven tem-
porary hospitals, which
was later raised to Rs
1,256 crore.

No rollback of Agnipath; good for Army, youth: NSA Doval
New Delhi (ANI): Amid
protests against the Ag-
nipath defence recruit-
ment scheme, National
Security Adviser (NSA)
Ajit Doval said on Tues-
day that “there is no
question” of a rollback.
“India has among the
youngest populations in
the world; yet it cannot
continue to have an
army with a high aver-
age age,” he told media,
arguing that the new
system will ensure a
more tech-savvy army
.
NSA Doval is the lat-
est among those de-
ployed by the govern-
ment to defend the
scheme for recruiting
‘Agniveer’ soldiers on
four-year contracts
without pension. Only
up to 25 per cent of these
recruits may be given
regular commission of
15 years thereafter. This
has led to violent pro-
tests across India.
On the protests, he
said vandalism is not
justified. “Those doing
this are not the aspir-
ants; the real ones are at
home, preparing.” He
said that while some
veterans had genuine
concerns and were now
changing their minds,
there are people who
“just want conflict in
society to discredit the
government”.
Speaking about the
future of Agniveers let
go after four years, he
asserted that the age
of “settling down” is
around 25-26 now. “Peo-
ple are speaking of one
life-two careers, even
three careers now.
When recruits from
the first batch of Ag-
niveers retire, India
will be 5-trillion-dollar

will need people who

Addressing the event

problem-solver and
brings inner peace.
The peace from yoga is
not merely for individu-

. Yoga brings

The Prime Minister
was accompanied at the

Basavaraj S Bommai.
No matter how

for a few minutes relax-

should not consider
yoga an additional
work. We have to know
yoga and live yoga and
make it our own, the
Prime Minister said.
Yoga is no longer a

coming a way of life,
he added.
This whole universe

The theme for this

entre has cau-

states which are
equal to the size
of Pakistan and
Sri Lanka to cut down on
their debts to avoid an eco-
nomic crisis being faced by
the two neighbouring coun-
tries. The Union finance min-
istry officials recently ad-
dressed a meeting of state
chief secretaries to flag the
issue of burgeoning fiscal
problems in some of the
stateswhich,if notcontrolled
now, may go out of hand. Un-
controlled debt and capital
expenditure of some of the
states could adversely impact
the performance of the econ-
omy at the national level.
An article by a team of
economists under the super-
vision of Reserve Bank of
India stated that Punjab, Ra-
jasthan, Bihar, West Bengal
and Kerala, the five most in-
debted states, need to cut
down on expenditure as their
debt has become unsustain-
able. Although the RBI arti-
cle does not mention Uttar

almost the size of Pakistan
and like Pakistan has a popu-
lation of 200 million, also has
a huge debt burden. As per
2021-22 budget estimates the
state’sliabilitieswerearound
Rs 6.5 lakh crore.
The five debt-ridden states
have questioned the hypoth-
esis of their being in a debt
trap. Kerala has said no to cut-
ting down expenditure. Only
a marginal cut in the revenue
expenditure is possible, said
former finance minister TM
Thomas Isaac. Rajasthan has
blamed “wrong” decisions of
the Centre like demonetiza-
tion and GST for its debt bur-
den and has asked for a stimu-
lus package. In Bengal, wel-
fare schemes were held re-
sponsible for increase in its
borrowings. These counter
arguments, however, do not
address the problem.

C
FINALLY, AFTER MUCH ANXIETY…
OPPN GETS ITS CANDIDATE
ver since Mamata Banerjee
registered that historic vic-
tory in the state Assembly
elections in 2021, her efforts
to unite the Opposition on at
least three occasions have
not turned out to be an easy
task. In March 2021, Mamata
had written to Opposition
honchos, urging them to
unite against the BJP’s al-
leged ‘assaults’ on democra-
cy and the Constitution.
Again in July 2021, Mama-
ta’s visit to Delhi stoked spec-
ulations over the fact if she
was actually pitching herself
as the PM candidate for the
2024 Lok Sabha polls. She
was, however, extremely cau-
tious and categorically ruled
out her (prime ministerial)
ambitions. When asked, she
reiterated that she was only
a “simple worker”.
She, however, was keen to
drive home the message that
her efforts were to unite Oppo-
sitionforcesatleastfortalksso
thattherecouldbeaconsensus
among parties to chalk out a
concreteplantodefeattheNar-
endra Modi-led BJP
. However,
all that is past now. Her recent
bid to bring the Opposition
camp into a huddle over the
crucial presidential polls is
also facing rough weather.
After NCP chief Sharad
Pawar and former Jammu
and Kashmir chief minister
Farooq Abdullah declined
the offer to be the joint Op-
position candidate, the third
jolt came in the form of Go-
palkrishna Gandhi, former
Governor of West Bengal,
who also refused the offer.
The process to elect a presi-
dential candidate began on
June 15 with the last date for
filing of nominations being
June 29. The polls are sched-
uled to be held on July 18.
The NCP veteran’s reluc-
tance pulled the plug on the
Opposition camp’s zeal and
NCP insiders said that Pawar
being a “people’s man” won’t
“restrict himself to Rashtra-
pati Bhavan”. “…don’t think
he is keen on it (contesting
the election). Saheb (Pawar)
is a people’s man who loves
meeting people. He will not
restrict himself to Rashtra-
pati Bhavan,” the party
sources said.
In a quick move, Farooq
Abdullah’s name was circu-
lated. However, unwilling to
contest, he said, “I believe
that JK is passing through
a critical juncture and my ef-
forts are required to help
navigate these uncertain
times. Therefore, I would like
to respectfully withdraw my
name from consideration
and I look forward to sup-
porting the joint opposition
consensus candidate.”
Meanwhile, according to
news reports on Monday
, BSP
supremo Mayawati’s name
was suggested by some Con-
gress leaders in Rajasthan
who backed their theory by
saying that Mayawati, the
face of Dalit politics in the
country, would be a better
choice as the Dalits, in the
larger context in the country,
have faith in the Congress
and in the bigger picture, this
would put the Grand Old Par-
ty in a better frame of things.
However, there was more
bad news for the Opposition
camp on Monday when Go-
palkrishna Gandhi too de-
clined the offer. The former
civil servant said the Opposi-
tion needs a candidate who
will generate a national con-
sensus and ensure unity. “I
am most grateful to them (the
Opposition),” Gandhi said.
The Opposition’s fight
looks stunted before it even
could begin and with the date
for filing the nomination
hardly a week away
, it is time
they zero in on a candidate at
least to reach a stage where
an election for the top post
takes place… or else with the
kind of bonhomie the Opposi-
tion parties are showing in
terms of uniting, with the
Lok Sabha elections just two
years away, one wonders
whether they would be able to
put up a unified fight at all...!
It may be noted that while
Leaders of Congress, Sama-
jwadi Party
, NCP
, DMK, RJD
and the Left parties attended
themeetingcalledbyMamata,
AAP
, TRS and BJD skipped it!

Ahmedabad: The Patel
chapter of the Congress
party was closed before
the assembly elections
in Gujarat. Congress’s
Decorated Patel leader
Hardik Patel has left the
party and is now root-
ing for Bharatiya Jana-
ta Party and Narendra
Modi. On the other
hand, Naresh Patel has
declared that he will not
enter active politics yet.
Remember, Naresh Pa-
tel is a leader of the in-
fluential Leuva Patel
community and is the
chairman of the Shrik-
hodladham Trust. He
said that senior people
associated with the so-
ciety do not want him to
enter politics. Anyway,
after the failure of the
Congress deal with
Prashant Kishor, it
seemed that Naresh Pa-
tel would stay away
from the Congress.
Keep in mind that
Naresh Patel’s joining
the Congress was dis-
cussed only at the time
of Prashant Kishor
joining the Congress. It
was Prashant Kishor
who had made him meet
the top Congress lead-
ers. Patel also had a con-
dition that if Prashant
Kishor contests the
Congress elections,
then he would join the
Congress. Now since he
has refused to enter ac-
tive politics, there is no
question of joining Con-
gress. In this way the
Congress once again
has kept itself away
from ‘Patel politics’.
Anyway, Congress nev-
er used to do Patel poli-
tics in Gujarat. Patels
have been voting for the
BJP for more than 30
years. Unlike the Patels,
the focus of the Con-
gress is on the weak
equations i.e. Kshatri-
yas, Harijans, Adivasis
and Muslims. This time
also the Congress will
fight the elections on
the same formula.

FTAs with UAE, OZ to boost apparel exports
New Delhi (PTI): Free trade

India with the UAE and Australia
will boost product and market
diversification of the apparel sec-

on Tuesday. AEPC Chairman

apparel market, which was just
under $1.5 trillion in 2013, is
expected to generate revenues to
the tune of $1.8 trillion in 2022
and $1.9 trillion in 2025. He said
India offers the world a complete
value chain solution from farm
to fashion. Talking about the
ongoing 67th India International

marketing platform to MSME
exporters from across the coun-

almost 500 exhibitors and more
than 2,000 overseas buyers and
buying agents. The buyers are
visiting from countries like the
US, Brazil, Japan, UK, Spain,
Australia, Poland, Colombia,
Greece, Italy, and Egypt. “The
council is taking efforts towards
promoting Brand India at various
global platforms, showcasing
its strength on sustainability,
circularity, ethical sourcing and
manufacturing, labour stand-
ards, women employment with
no child labour,” Goenka added.
“I have set a modest target for
the apparel sector, which is to
double the production and triple
the exports. So, this 15 per cent
growth is achievable,” Goyal said

Doha (PTI): It is not
easy for an airline to
operate in India and if
the Tata Group cannot
make Air India work,
no one else in the coun-

Emirates President
Tim Clark has said.
“Air India should be as
big as United Airlines.
It should be as big be-
cause of its domestic
market as well as the
NRIs abroad and the
amount of economic
activity that goes in
and out of India. It is a
goldmine,” Clark said
on Monday
.
While Air India cur-

United Airlines has
860-odd aircraft.
“You (India) have got

growing all the time
that for the notion that
Air India would not be
one of the largest in-

sense,” Clark said.
The Tata Group took
control of loss-making
and debt-ridden Air In-
dia on January 27 after
successfully winning
the bid for the airline
on October 8 last year.
Clark stated, “I

that could have hap-

lines to buy Boeing 707
aircraft in 1959 or

this reserve price.

Lucknow: The by-elec-
tion for the Azamgarh
parliamentary seat has
its own implications
and connotations for
political parties. While
the SP has to prove that
its credibility is fully
intact among Muslim
voters, the Saifai family
is going through a
tough test of its hold in
this bastion.
Whereas, the BJP is
testing the effectiveness
of its organization and
caste-equations, the po-
litically decimated BSP
is eager to gain new
hope through this elec-
toral battle.
Azamgarh seat with
about 19 lakh voters
may have a majority of
Muslim and Yadav vot-
ers, but a significant
number of Dalit, OBC
and Most OBC voters
are also present. Voting
pattern, in the last gen-
eral elections and the
recently concluded as-
sembly elections, shows
that a large majority of
Jatav and Pasi voters
still have affiliations
with the BSP, while Lo-
nia, Chauhan, Kurmi,
Nishad, Mauryas and
Rajbhar voters
strengthened the BJP's
vote base; although the
first choice of Muslim
and Yadav voters has
remained the SP.
Political observers
assert that BSP founder
Kanshi Ram had
strengthened his base
here by integrating sev-
eral backward and Dalit
castes into the party
fold. Because of which
BSP won the Lok Sabha
elections four times
from here.
However, in the year
2019, due to the alliance
with the SP, this mass
base was eroded from
the BSP at a rapid pace.
As a result, for the first
time in the year 2022,
BSP could not win a sin-
gle assembly seat from
the district.
Now in this by-elec-
tion, Mayawati has de-
liberately fielded Shah
Alam aka Guddu Jama-
li in the electoral fray
, if
this experiment is suc-
cessful then it will help
to prove that the major
chunk of Dalit voters is
still fully committed
with the BSP.
At the same time, this
message will be deliv-
ered among the Muslim
community that not the
SP but only the BSP has
the ability to defeat the
BJP with the strength
of its core vote base.

While the BJP has
termed the elections
‘dharm Yuddh’ (reli-

the two seats, both
its strongholds, is a
matter of prestige
for the SP.
A loss here would
negate the gains
made in the recent-

Pact for deployment of
retired navy personnel
on merchant ships
New Delhi (PTI): To ben-
efit personnel retiring
from the Indian Navy
and provide them oppor-
tunity to work on mer-
chant ships, a memoran-
dum of understanding
has been signed between
the Directorate General
of Shipping and Indian
Navy, according to an of-
ficial statement.
The statement further
said that the Directorate
General of Shipping un-
der the Ministry of
Ports Shipping and Wa-
terways has issued an
order detailing 16 transi-
tion schemes for Indian
Navy personnel to Mer-
chant Navy. These tran-
sition schemes have
been drawn after a de-
tailed discussion with
Indian Navy, it added.
The announcement
comes amid widespread
protests against the re-
cently unveiled ‘Agnipath’
scheme for recruitment
of soldiers in the armed
forces on a short-term
contractual basis. The sol-
diers recruited under
this scheme will be
called ‘Agniveers’.
“These schemes enable
smooth transition of the
retiring Indian Navy
personnelintoMerchant
Navy by acquiring neces-
sarycertificationtowork
on merchant ships in ac-
cordance with the Stand-
ards of Training Certifi-
cation,” the statement
added.

NO NUKES? UKRAINE-RUSSIAN WAR
WILL SHAPE WORLD’S ARSENALS
Kyiv (AP): The head-
lines on the newsstands
in Seoul blared fresh
warnings of a possible
nuclear test by North
Korea.
Out on the sidewalks,
28-year-old office work-
er Lee Jae Sang already
had an opinion about
how to respond to North
Korea’s fast-growing ca-
pacity to lob nuclear
bombs across borders
and oceans.
Our country should
also develop a nuclear
programme. And pre-
pare for a possible nu-
clear war,” said Lee,
voicing a desire that a
February poll showed
was shared by 3 out of 4
South Koreans.
It’s a point that people
and politicians of non-
nuclear powers globally
are raising more often,
at what has become a
destabilising moment in
more than a half-centu-
ry of global nuclear
nonproliferation efforts,
one aggravated by the
daily example of nucle-
ar Russia tearing apart
non-nuclear Ukraine.
That reconsideration
by non-nuclear states is
playing out in Asia. The
region is home to an ev-
er-more assertive North
Korea, China, Russia
and Iran three nuclear
powers and one near-
nuclear power but is un-
protected by the kind of
nuclear umbrella and
broad defense alliance
that for decades has
shielded NATO coun-
tries.
Vulnerable countries
will look to the lessons
from Ukraine especially
whether Russia suc-
ceeds in swallowing big
pieces of Ukraine while
brandishing its nuclear
arsenal to hold other na-
tions at bay as they con-
sider keeping or pursu-
ing nuclear weapons,
security experts say
.
As important, they
say, is how well the US
and its allies are per-
suading other partners
in Europe, the Persian
Gulf and Asia to trust in
the shield of US-led nu-
clear and conventional
arsenals and not pursue
their own nuclear
bombs. For leaders wor-
ried about unfriendly,
nuclear-armed neigh-
bours, they will say to
their domestic audienc-
es, Please support our
nuclear armament be-
cause look what hap-
pened to Ukraine,’
right? said Mariana
Budjeryn, a researcher
with the Project on Man-
aging the Atom at Har-
vard’s Kennedy School
of Government.
As a schoolgirl in
1980s Soviet-era
Ukraine, Budjeryn
drilled on how to dress
radiation burns and
other potential injuries
of nuclear war, at a time
that country housed
some 5,000 of the Soviet
Union’s nuclear weap-
ons. Her country re-
nounced nuclear weap-
ons development after
the Soviet Union shat-
tered, opting for eco-
nomic assistance and
integration with the
West and security assur-
ances.

UKRAINE WEATHERS
BOMBARDMENT
Kyiv (AP): Russian
attacks laid down a
curtain of fire Tues-
day across areas of
eastern Ukraine where
pockets of resistance
are denying Moscow
full military control
of the region, almost
four months after the
Kremlin unleashed
an invasion.Today
everything that can
burn is on fire, Serhiy
Haidai, the governor
of Ukraine’s eastern
Luhansk region, told
The Associated Press.
Russia’s war has
caused alarm over
food supplies from
Ukraine to the rest
of the world and gas
supplies from Rus-
sia, as well as rais-
ing questions about
security in Western
Europe.The Russian
military currently con-
trols about 95% of the
Luhansk region. But
Moscow has struggled
for weeks to overrun
it completely, despite
deploying additional
troops and possessing
a massive advantage
in military assets. In
the city of Sieviero-
donetsk, the hot spot
of the fighting, Ukrain-
ian defenders held on
to the Azot chemical
plant in the industrial
outskirts. About 500
civilians are shelter-
ing at the plant, and
Haidai said the Rus-
sian forces are turning
the area into ruins. It
is a sheer catastrophe,
Haidai told the AP in
written comments
about the plant.
BLOCKING
NUCLEAR THREATS
In Europe and in the
Persian Gulf, President
Joe Biden and US
generals, diplomats and
troops are shuttling to
countries neighbour-
ing Russia and to
oil-producing countries
neighbouring Iran. Biden
and his top lieuten-
ants pledge the US is
committed to blocking
nuclear threats from
Iran and North Korea.
The scheme also provides various options to Indian Navy
personnel from NCV Ship to Foreign Going Ships certification.

Kashmiri Pandit

Tuesday adopted a
novel way of using

The protesting
employees per-

asanas and raised
slogans like “we
want justice” in-
stead of the vedic
chants associated
with the practice.
While some of
these employees
pasted placards
in support of
their demands on
their torso, sev-
eral others wore
T-shirts bearing
photographs of
Bhat.
“We have been
sitting here in
protest everyday
andtodaythrough
this programme,
we want to convey
our demand to the
state govern-
ment,” one of the
employees said.
On Monday
, the
KP employees had

ing Group (JWG).

A
fter the release of Allu Arjun, Rash-
mika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil
starrer Pushpa: The Rise in Decem-
ber last year, fans are eagerly
waiting for its sequel. And now
even before Pushpa 2 has gone on
the floors, speculations are rife
that Rashmika’s character
Srivalli might get killed in the
sequel. According to the sourc-
es, Pushpa producer Y. Ravi
Shankar clarifies the rumours.
“That’s all trash,” he states, fur-
ther adding, “This is all nonsense.
Until now we didn’t hear the story
to be fair and frank, so it’s not like
that, and all these are speculations.
At this point in time, you write
anything on that film, no one
knows anything about that, so they
believe in it. This is being carried
by other websites and TV
channels also, but it’s
false news.” So
Rashmika’s char-
acter does live in
part 2? “Ya ya,
sure,” confirms
Y. Ravi Shankar.

No need to panic but exercise caution: Experts amid rise in Covid cases in city New Delhi (PTI): Amid a spike in Covid cases in Delhi, experts on Tuesday said there was no need to panic as the number of coronavirus patients getting hospi- talised was still on the lower side but asserted that every individual should exercise caution and follow all safety norms. Delhi on Monday re- ported 1,060 new Covid cases in a day and six deaths, the highest in around four months, and a positivi- ty rate of 10.09 per cent, the highest since January 24 when the figure was 11.8 per cent. The city on Friday had recorded 1,797 coro- navirus cases, the high- est in nearly four months, along with one fatality while the posi- tivity rate was 8.18 per cent. Doctors at leading government and pri- vate hospitals here con- curred that though it wasn’t a “panic situa- tion” but cautioned against lowering the guard, while flagging that many people had stopped wearing mask or stopped putting it on properly at public plac- es, either due to a sense of complacency or fear- lessness after getting vaccinated. I entre has cau- tioned Indian states which are equal to the size of Pakistan and Sri Lanka to cut down on their debts to avoid an eco- nomic crisis being faced by the two neighbouring coun- tries. The Union finance min- istry officials recently ad- dressed a meeting of state chief secretaries to flag the issue of burgeoning fiscal problems in some of the stateswhich,if notcontrolled now, may go out of hand. Un- controlled debt and capital expenditure of some of the states could adversely impact the performance of the econ- omy at the national level. An article by a team of economists under the super- vision of Reserve Bank of India stated that Punjab, Ra- jasthan, Bihar, West Bengal and Kerala, the five most in- debted states, need to cut down on expenditure as their debt has become unsustain- able. Although the RBI arti- cle does not mention Uttar Pradesh, the state which is almost the size of Pakistan and like Pakistan has a popu- lation of 200 million, also has a huge debt burden. As per 2021-22 budget estimates the state’sliabilitieswerearound Rs 6.5 lakh crore. The five debt-ridden states have questioned the hypoth- esis of their being in a debt trap. Kerala has said no to cut- ting down expenditure. Only a marginal cut in the revenue expenditure is possible, said former finance minister TM Thomas Isaac. Rajasthan has blamed “wrong” decisions of the Centre like demonetiza- tion and GST for its debt bur- den and has asked for a stimu- lus package. In Bengal, wel- fare schemes were held re- sponsible for increase in its borrowings. These counter arguments, however, do not address the problem. DEBT BURDEN OF STATES A CONCERN An article by a team of economists under supervision of RBI stated that Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, WB and Kerala, 5 most indebted states, need to cut down on expenditure as their debt has become unsustainable C FINALLY, AFTER MUCH ANXIETY… OPPN GETS ITS CANDIDATE ver since Mamata Banerjee registered that historic vic- tory in the state Assembly elections in 2021, her efforts to unite the Opposition on at least three occasions have not turned out to be an easy task. In March 2021, Mamata had written to Opposition honchos, urging them to unite against the BJP’s al- leged ‘assaults’ on democra- cy and the Constitution. Again in July 2021, Mama- ta’s visit to Delhi stoked spec- ulations over the fact if she was actually pitching herself as the PM candidate for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. She was, however, extremely cau- tious and categorically ruled out her (prime ministerial) ambitions. When asked, she reiterated that she was only a “simple worker”. She, however, was keen to drive home the message that her efforts were to unite Oppo- sitionforcesatleastfortalksso thattherecouldbeaconsensus among parties to chalk out a concreteplantodefeattheNar- endra Modi-led BJP . However, all that is past now. Her recent bid to bring the Opposition camp into a huddle over the crucial presidential polls is also facing rough weather. After NCP chief Sharad Pawar and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah declined the offer to be the joint Op- position candidate, the third jolt came in the form of Go- palkrishna Gandhi, former Governor of West Bengal, who also refused the offer. The process to elect a presi- dential candidate began on June 15 with the last date for filing of nominations being June 29. The polls are sched- uled to be held on July 18. The NCP veteran’s reluc- tance pulled the plug on the Opposition camp’s zeal and NCP insiders said that Pawar being a “people’s man” won’t “restrict himself to Rashtra- pati Bhavan”. “…don’t think he is keen on it (contesting the election). Saheb (Pawar) is a people’s man who loves meeting people. He will not restrict himself to Rashtra- pati Bhavan,” the party sources said. In a quick move, Farooq Abdullah’s name was circu- lated. However, unwilling to contest, he said, “I believe that JK is passing through a critical juncture and my ef- forts are required to help navigate these uncertain times. Therefore, I would like to respectfully withdraw my name from consideration and I look forward to sup- porting the joint opposition consensus candidate.” Meanwhile, according to news reports on Monday , BSP supremo Mayawati’s name was suggested by some Con- gress leaders in Rajasthan who backed their theory by saying that Mayawati, the face of Dalit politics in the country, would be a better choice as the Dalits, in the larger context in the country, have faith in the Congress and in the bigger picture, this would put the Grand Old Par- ty in a better frame of things. However, there was more bad news for the Opposition camp on Monday when Go- palkrishna Gandhi too de- clined the offer. The former civil servant said the Opposi- tion needs a candidate who will generate a national con- sensus and ensure unity. “I am most grateful to them (the Opposition),” Gandhi said. The Opposition’s fight looks stunted before it even could begin and with the date for filing the nomination hardly a week away , it is time they zero in on a candidate at least to reach a stage where an election for the top post takes place… or else with the kind of bonhomie the Opposi- tion parties are showing in terms of uniting, with the Lok Sabha elections just two years away, one wonders whether they would be able to put up a unified fight at all...! It may be noted that while Leaders of Congress, Sama- jwadi Party , NCP , DMK, RJD and the Left parties attended themeetingcalledbyMamata, AAP , TRS and BJD skipped it! While the SP has to prove that its credibility is fully intact among Muslim voters, the Saifai family is going through a tough test of its hold in this bastion. Whereas, the BJP is testing the effectiveness of its organization and caste-equations, the po- litically decimated BSP is eager to gain new hope through this elec- toral battle. Azamgarh seat with about 19 lakh voters may have a majority of Muslim and Yadav vot- ers, but a significant number of Dalit, OBC and Most OBC voters are also present. Voting pattern, in the last gen- eral elections and the recently concluded as- sembly elections, shows that a large majority of Jatav and Pasi voters still have affiliations with the BSP, while Lo- nia, Chauhan, Kurmi, Nishad, Mauryas and Rajbhar voters strengthened the BJP's vote base; although the first choice of Muslim and Yadav voters has remained the SP. Political observers assert that BSP founder Kanshi Ram had strengthened his base here by integrating sev- eral backward and Dalit castes into the party fold. Because of which BSP won the Lok Sabha elections four times from here. However, in the year 2019, due to the alliance with the SP, this mass base was eroded from the BSP at a rapid pace. As a result, for the first time in the year 2022, BSP could not win a sin- gle assembly seat from the district. Now in this by-elec- tion, Mayawati has de- liberately fielded Shah Alam aka Guddu Jama- li in the electoral fray , if this experiment is suc- cessful then it will help to prove that the major chunk of Dalit voters is still fully committed with the BSP. At the same time, this message will be deliv- ered among the Muslim community that not the SP but only the BSP has the ability to defeat the BJP with the strength of its core vote base. While the BJP has termed the elections ‘dharm Yuddh’ (reli- gious war), winning the two seats, both its strongholds, is a matter of prestige for the SP. A loss here would negate the gains made in the recent- ly-held state elec- tions, and drag its performance in the 2024 general elec- tions. With Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Par- ty (BSP) being rele- gated to third posi- tion and its strength reduced substantial- ly — the SP hopes that it would win the seats easily . Azamgarh, in eastern UP, has a mi- nority population of about 15.58 percent, Schedule Caste are about 26 percent, and it has a sizeable Yadav population. In the recently- held assembly elec- tions, the SP swept all the 10 seats of the district. The SP’s alliance with OP Rajbhar’s SBSP and Apna Dal(K) worked in its favour here. The statement further said that the Directorate General of Shipping un- der the Ministry of Ports Shipping and Wa- terways has issued an order detailing 16 transi- tion schemes for Indian Navy personnel to Mer- chant Navy. These tran- sition schemes have been drawn after a de- tailed discussion with Indian Navy, it added. The announcement comes amid widespread protests against the re- cently unveiled ‘Agnipath’ scheme for recruitment of soldiers in the armed forces on a short-term contractual basis. The sol- diers recruited under this scheme will be called ‘Agniveers’. “These schemes enable smooth transition of the retiring Indian Navy personnelintoMerchant Navy by acquiring neces- sarycertificationtowork on merchant ships in ac- cordance with the Stand- ards of Training Certifi- cation,” the statement added. Vulnerable countries will look to the lessons from non-nuclear Ukraine defending its home against nuclear-powered Russia NO NUKES? UKRAINE-RUSSIAN WAR WILL SHAPE WORLD’S ARSENALS Kyiv (AP): The head- lines on the newsstands in Seoul blared fresh warnings of a possible nuclear test by North Korea. Out on the sidewalks, 28-year-old office work- er Lee Jae Sang already had an opinion about how to respond to North Korea’s fast-growing ca- pacity to lob nuclear bombs across borders and oceans. Our country should also develop a nuclear programme. And pre- pare for a possible nu- clear war,” said Lee, voicing a desire that a February poll showed was shared by 3 out of 4 South Koreans. It’s a point that people and politicians of non- nuclear powers globally are raising more often, at what has become a destabilising moment in more than a half-centu- ry of global nuclear nonproliferation efforts, one aggravated by the daily example of nucle- ar Russia tearing apart non-nuclear Ukraine. That reconsideration by non-nuclear states is playing out in Asia. The region is home to an ev- er-more assertive North Korea, China, Russia and Iran three nuclear powers and one near- nuclear power but is un- protected by the kind of nuclear umbrella and broad defense alliance that for decades has shielded NATO coun- tries. Vulnerable countries will look to the lessons from Ukraine especially whether Russia suc- ceeds in swallowing big pieces of Ukraine while brandishing its nuclear arsenal to hold other na- tions at bay as they con- sider keeping or pursu- ing nuclear weapons, security experts say . As important, they say, is how well the US and its allies are per- suading other partners in Europe, the Persian Gulf and Asia to trust in the shield of US-led nu- clear and conventional arsenals and not pursue their own nuclear bombs. For leaders wor- ried about unfriendly, nuclear-armed neigh- bours, they will say to their domestic audienc- es, Please support our nuclear armament be- cause look what hap- pened to Ukraine,’ right? said Mariana Budjeryn, a researcher with the Project on Man- aging the Atom at Har- vard’s Kennedy School of Government. As a schoolgirl in 1980s Soviet-era Ukraine, Budjeryn drilled on how to dress radiation burns and other potential injuries of nuclear war, at a time that country housed some 5,000 of the Soviet Union’s nuclear weap- ons. Her country re- nounced nuclear weap- ons development after the Soviet Union shat- tered, opting for eco- nomic assistance and integration with the West and security assur- ances. People protest at a rally calling for Russia to stop the war against Ukraine in Seoul, South Korea. UKRAINE WEATHERS BOMBARDMENT Kyiv (AP): Russian attacks laid down a curtain of fire Tues- day across areas of eastern Ukraine where pockets of resistance are denying Moscow full military control of the region, almost four months after the Kremlin unleashed an invasion.Today everything that can burn is on fire, Serhiy Haidai, the governor of Ukraine’s eastern Luhansk region, told The Associated Press. Russia’s war has caused alarm over food supplies from Ukraine to the rest of the world and gas supplies from Rus- sia, as well as rais- ing questions about security in Western Europe. The Russian military currently con- trols about 95% of the Luhansk region. But Moscow has struggled for weeks to overrun it completely, despite deploying additional troops and possessing a massive advantage in military assets. In the city of Sieviero- donetsk, the hot spot of the fighting, Ukrain- ian defenders held on to the Azot chemical plant in the industrial outskirts. About 500 civilians are shelter- ing at the plant, and Haidai said the Rus- sian forces are turning the area into ruins. It is a sheer catastrophe, Haidai told the AP in written comments about the plant. BLOCKING NUCLEAR THREATS In Europe and in the Persian Gulf, President Joe Biden and US generals, diplomats and troops are shuttling to countries neighbour- ing Russia and to oil-producing countries neighbouring Iran. Biden and his top lieuten- ants pledge the US is committed to blocking nuclear threats from Iran and North Korea. The scheme also provides various options to Indian Navy personnel from NCV Ship to Foreign Going Ships certification. Kashmiri Pandits perform unique yoga in Kashmir Srinagar (PTI): Kashmiri Pandit employees on Tuesday adopted a novel way of using yoga to highlight their demand for relocation out of Kashmir in the wake of recent at- tacks on minori- ties in the valley . The Kashmiri Pandit (KP) em- ployees, who have been protesting since the killing of Rahul Bhat on May 12, observed the International Day of Yoga at their camp site at Sheikhpora Mi- grant Colony in Budgam.
