The Origins of Computer Science

In the mid-1930s, General Electric suggested that IBM run customer executive
training classes to explain what IBM products could do for clients. In response,
IBM created a tabulating knowledge-sharing program.

The Origins of Services Science
450+ universities worldwide offer
some sort of service science
program—blending of courses
from their computer science,
social science and business
management departments.

“IBM started computer
science. You should start
service science.”
!
Henry Chesbrough, a professor of business
and innovation at the University of California at
Berkeley, said to IBM’s Jim Spohrer in 2004.

P-TECH High School
IBM created a blueprint
fox six-year degrees in
applied sciences,
engineering and
computer science for
grades 9-14 called IBM's
Pathways in Technology
Early College High
Schools (P-TECH). IBM
provides mentoring to
the students.
“Now at schools like P-TECH in Brooklyn, a collaboration between
New York public schools and City University of New York and IBM,
students will graduate with a high school diploma and an associate’s
degree in computers or engineering. We need to give every
American student opportunities like this.”
Barack Obama, President of the United States
