In the construction and design of a tunnel, the preliminary study of the rock mass along its route cannot be ignored because it is necessary, first of all, even in the first phase of the design, to consider the various aspects: functional, environmental, social, economic, etc. .
However, the fundamental part is given by the behavior of the geological formations, also in relation to water, which must be studied and analyzed both from a geological and geotechnical point of view. These are the most important factors to consider both in the design and construction phase of a tunnel. In particular:
- crossing of faults and milonitized areas with the presence of fluid-plastic soil;
- strong floods of water;
- gas inflows.

Before moving on to the repair techniques and materials to be used for the reinforcement of the "cortical layer" of concrete, inside a railway tunnel, it is necessary to make a premise premising that, although many repair techniques are known, they are very different from each other when you are in the presence of a road tunnel, made of traditional or fiber-reinforced concrete, and a hydraulic or railway tunnel, made of prefabricated self-supporting ashlars or traditional reinforced concrete, where, overall, in particular, the concept of durability is enormously different.
Let's start this article with the problems of water infiltration through cracks that occur in prefabricated segments after the assembly phase in a new tunnel under construction.
As illustrated several times, in tunnels, especially in metropolitan areas, it very often happens that excavation works must be carried out below the aquifer level, sometimes at quite high pressures. This is a problem that requires a lot of attention on the part of the designer and the executors, since due to the presence of a pitch, the following can occur:
- problems during the excavation phase;
- problems related to alteration of the aquifer;
- problems with infiltration through the joints and / or cracks that occur in the prefabricated segments due to poor execution of the same or for other reasons.

I state that I am not looking for candidate but for a "Trust Structure" such as "Trust Company" or "Brokerage Services" or similar that has the skills and knowledge to comunicate with the top management of the Board of two of the most important business credit institutions of the world by capitalization, in the top 10, for the liquidation of some very important "assets", in US currency which, this Foundation, holds the "Power of Attorney".
In my long professional career of almost 45 years, in addition to underground structures, I also had to deal with the structural rehabilitation of bridges, viaducts, embankments, earth and concrete dams.
Therefore, through this new post, I would like to begin to address the problems inherent in the degradation of the concrete of our above-ground infrastructures, using particular resinous and cementitious formulations for the construction, repair and restoration of bridges.
Commonly an anti-nuclear shelter, equipped with particular technological systems, which ensure the complete aseptic air inside it, is indicated as a housing solution to avoid contamination by nuclear radiation during an armed conflict with the use of unconventional weapons. .
The envelope is usually made from a load-bearing structure in reinforced concrete and built directly underground, in depth, to make the most of the shielding action of the ground to defend itself from contamination by chemical weapons and biological weapons and thus avoid contact with every source of pollution and ensure the survival of the occupants for a very variable period of time.
In the event of a nuclear disaster, the release of radioactive substances [radioisotopes] does not happen all at once, but continues over time in the form of gases, vapors and dust. Hence, our exposure to radioactivity is prolonged and depends on the strength and direction of the winds and on our proximity or distance from the place where the nuclear disaster occurred.
In 2005, through the pages of a prestigious Italian trade magazine, I turned to readers, if they were aware of how many methods of excavating underground tunnels, with mechanized cutters, could exist in the complex world of mechanical engineering of the subsoil.
Even today, after 17 years, I have received only a few positive feedbacks.
Up to now, the advantage of excavating with circular mechanized cutters arises from the guarantee because we are able to know the structural stability for any type of tunnel. In practice, it has been possible for many years to create tunnels with different cross sections, rather than circular ones.
In fact, it is possible to design, and at the same time excavate, tunnels with rectangular and oval sections, taking into account that, in the underground excavation, there are always stress states that are little known to most of us, even if we are technicians in the sector.
New emerging problems linked to sustainability and innovation are the development of a new concept of underground excavation, developed in the last 30 years, with particular mechanized cutters to create very versatile tunnels, with different types of configurations. The 3 types of excavation machines most used and known today, for the type of soil on which they must operate, are illustrated below, in figure 01) [Silt & Clay, Sand, Gravel and Rock]
As a technician I try to illustrate my geopolitical vision on why there is a lack of raw materials worldwide, recalling that today the technologies used in the mining sector are very advanced compared to yesterday despite the fact that mining companies lack a unified vision and often struggle to use the scarce resources made available on digital investments.
However, despite the mistrust of many mining companies, I would like to point out that it is still possible, especially in this world scenario, to complete any process of technological innovation that is constantly evolving, as is digitization, which is now possible even in 6G mode [where, compared to 5G, speeds of about 206.25 gigabits per second can be reached] as well as artificial intelligence, on which I urge you to pay your attention, because these are the technologies that will help us change many things quickly to get more efficient mines.
In fact, by integrating more access technologies, covering a larger physical space, it is by providing the best basic capacity, such as communication, to be able to go up to the great depths of the subsoil and the sea, with modern equipment that will be increasingly mechanized, in robotic mode, supporting multiple services, not only necessary for excavation, but all this also contributes to greater operator safety and all in "Green" mode.
This is where the policy must be concentrated, towards the company, helping it, with new targeted investments and new regulations, to evolve its organizational characteristics over time and therefore its ability to manage innovation processes, through the modification of new proposals of law to help us coordinate research and innovation on a global level and not for the conquest of new territories, through absurd wars.
The earth's subsoil and the seabed are the resources of all of us and, starting with the creation of a virtual union, worldwide, in which we will all be interconnected and, if we can manage the flow of data in reproducing any object, created to support the reproduction of mixed mining environments between real and virtual, with human-machine interaction in real time, we can really have a significant reduction in costs and very reduced times, in a controlled way, in search of all those minerals that we need, including the "Rare Earths", even without the use of manpower and with the use of fewer and fewer components.
However, my intent is only to begin to do some clarity with you, to make environmental friends better understand and not only that the ways in which environmental issues are addressed today are currently only instrumental, borrowed from some politicians and from politics, because, these gentlemen still have not realized what we are talking about and discussing.
Mr. LAMANNA Luigi Franco Mr. LAMANNA Luigi Franco has worked in these 45 years as a professional consultant and technical management activity in the various civil, industrial, military, hydraulic, railway, motorway sectors and in the last 25 years in the "Tunneling" sector for land consolidation. , their stabilization in excavation, etc.
For the "Mining" sector, in recent years it has been dealing with the extraction of "Rare Earths" and for the stabilization of slopes [open pit mines], consolidation of the rock support, shotcrete, particular
injections with cements or formulations resinous while, in the "Engineering" of particular "Technologies", for the rehabilitation of deteriorated reinforced concrete structures, following earthquakes or other causes, in particular concrete or earth dams.
Particular attention is paid to the use of special and formulated "resinous" cements and related technologies for the consolidation and repair of masonry, iron and wood.
During the excavation of underground tunnels with TBM of the EPB type (Earth Pressure Balance), with the possibility of being convertible into a Slurry TBM (for use with bentonite mud) to be used for excavation in rock, it is one of the largest problems for the conditioning of the soil, along its entire route, in particular in front of the rotating excavation head, especially when one is in the presence of mixed alluvial soils of the sandy-gravelly type and many times, under the aquifer.
Alluvial soils are composed of a variously assorted mixture of clay, silt or silt, sand and gravel.
These types of soils are very present in river valleys, alluvial plains and in the areas of the mouth of rivers. These are formed thanks to the deposition, during episodes of flooding, of the sediments transported by the flooded watercourses outside their riverbed.
In general, EPB-type TBMs are suitable for making tunnels in the presence of low-permeability soils and with a content of fine particles (diameter <0.075 mm) of at least 15-20%, which require an equilibrium pressure of less than 5 -6 bar. In addition, the EPB-type mechanized milling cutter is more suitable than the bentonite mud [slurry] face counter-pressure machine in the event that numerous inspections in the excavation chamber are required, as the emptying of the excavation chamber takes place through the screw conveyor takes place, in a much faster time.
In 2005, through the pages of a prestigious Italian trade magazine, I turned to readers, if they were aware
of how many methods of excavating underground tunnels, with mechanized cutters, could exist in the
complex world of mechanical engineering of the subsoil.
Even today, after 17 years, I have received only a few positive feedbacks.
The FOUNDATION will participate directly with its "ECO-SUSTAINABLE" and "ECO-INNOVATIVE" projects through the creation of an "INNOVATIVE INDUSTRIAL CENTER" in the process of innovation of the human being and our planet earth through new integrated architecture protocols of " air, subsoil and seabed "of the sixth generation involving" Participatory Startups ", with objectives based exclusively on" research "and" development ".
Rock Reinforcement is used to indicated method of enhancing the rock mass strength and hence improving the ability of rock mass to contain the engineering excavation without deforming excessively.
Rock Support is used to indicated method of applying supporting loads or displacement constraints as additional structural elements, so that the engineering excavation retains its integrity.

Hence, our exposure to radioactivity is prolonged and depends on the strength and direction of the winds and on our proximity or distance from the place where the nuclear disaster occurred.
Usually the lining, for this type of excavation, using TBM-EPB, is made with prefabricated concrete segments, and through this memory, I would like to suggest a new technology and related methodology using, instead of the "Pel-Gravel", of the lightweight cellular concrete / concrete CLC [Reported by ACI Committee 523].
What is very important is that even this type of proposed material must also be able to influence the interaction between the support [which is the rock] and the excavation behavior along the tunnel layout.
According to Japanese researchers from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology there are between 80 and 100 billion tons of rare earths at a depth of between 3,500 and 6,000 meters below the botton of the Pacific Ocean in an area that lies beneath the jurisdiction of Hawaii, east of Tahiti in an area under the jurisdiction of French Polynesia and in the Japanese seabed.
At this depth, between 4 and 6 thousand meters, in addition to the presence of rare earths, there are expanses of polymetallic nodules [1], which are chemical sedimentary rocks, siliceous-metalliferous, spherical or lenticular, characterized from a dark crust of black, bluish or brown color, and from an average diameter of 5 cm and which may contain different percentages of minerals depending on the magma from which the degassing originates (they continuously form where clack-smokers are present) .
I would like to point out that in the vicinity of these black-smokers, typical of the oceanic ridge areas, the temperature goes from 400° C up to 1,000° C and the acidity of the sea water is so low that it touches a pH of 2, 8.
The immediate future of humanity, in my opinion, must not be projected towards the conquest of space but must be directed towards the subsoil of the earth. From now until 2050, the demand for minerals will increase by more than 300% and extraction will grow at unprecedented rates.
Worldwide there is already a real "hunting" for new materials, in particular those called "rare earths", because they can replace, as already happens in certain industrial and strategic sectors [1] those that are normally used as a source of energy together with other minerals [2], always present in the subsoil, but less valuable.

CRITERI PER LA SCELTA DEI MATERIALI E DEI RELATIVI METODI DI INIEZIONE PER IL
CONSOLIDAMENTO, RINFORZO E IMPERMEABILIZZAZIONE PERMANENTE DEL TERRENO DI
SCARPATE
di LAMANNA Luigi Franco (multi-disciplinary, full-service engineering consultant) (*)
Title of the article:
CRITERIA FOR THE CHOICE OF MATERIALS AND RELATED METHODS OF INJECTION FOR THE
CONSOLIDATION, STRENGTHENING AND PERMANENT WATERPROOFING OF THE GROUND
by LAMANNA Luigi Franco (multi-disciplinary, full-service engineering consultant) (*)
roccia in profondità.
materiale detritico (crolli o frane).
e i nuovi prodotti innovativi. Infatti i progettisti, spesso devono risolvere grandi problematiche in tempi ridottissimi a causa
conoscenza.
Tipico rafforzamento e consolidamento dell’ammasso roccioso
potrebbero presentarsi in futuro.
- reti di protezione semplici fissate generalmente solo in sommità;
esigenze di durabilità connesse all’ambito applicativo.
I Cementi
bentonite (1 – 7 % sul peso del cemento);
- Cemento-argilla;
- Miscele espanse.
cm.
(1 - 2 minuti a + 18° C.).

In geological and geotechnical studies, the relaxation of boulders along the detrital slope of the escarpments, known as
"cortical instability", is one of the most studied phenomena of soils and rock masses, in particular at discontinuity
surfaces, because they involve instability processes of widespread phenomena of alteration.
The instabilities in the rock mass usually develop progressively over time and can sometimes jeopardize the global
stability of entire surfaces, especially if they are typical mountain areas of our territory.
In fact, the rocky part characterized by congenital discontinuities or stratification joints is the one most subject to the
action of atmospheric agents that accelerate its degradation such as the action of water (washout, incrustation,
hydrostatic pressure, ice, etc.) , wind and temperature excursions, together with thermal expansion, the spreading
action of the root systems of plants (wedge effect of the roots inside the fractures), and above all the karst dissolution ,
the mineralogical alteration , and the hydration processes should not be underestimated and argillification, a very
important factor causing strong instability over time. All this determines the triggering in the rock mass of slow
deformation phenomena which with unpredictable progression over time and with irreversibility character, lead
to localized collapses with consequent collapse or fall of large volumes of rock.
Generally the part of the rock mass involved in this phenomenon is the cortical thickness which, usually, is not greater
than 1 - 2 m even if the degraded part can easily reach the depth of 5 - 10 m
The analysis of core samples acts to highlight the fractured characteristics together with a series of on data rock mass
( spacing of the fractures, and geo-mechanical conditions of humidity, characteristics chemical and physical properties
of the layer and its thickness, s u to tilt, the seriousness of the situation, etc.), enable local specialists to choose from a
myriad of types and systems for coating the face of an escarpment, with remediation and / or consolidation systems that
allow to increase the stabilizing forces and tend the improvement of their geotechnical characteristics. Furthermore ,
anchors are a fundamental part of the system , which are usually chosen by geologists and engineers based on the geometric
and geotechnical characteristics of the site to be worked on. ( 2008 NTC )
This article wants to bring to your attention an improvement solution to the many known techniques for
the consolidation and / or cortical strengthening of slopes with relaxation phenomena in progress or in landslide , with
the use of a "systematic association" of metal nets and anchors (nailing or bolting) of the rocky face.
The function of the metal nets and anchors (riveting or bolting) is to prevent movements in the rock mass and prevent
the fall of stones or blocks by flaking or splitting the walls or by sliding of rocky volumes.
In fact, this "systematic association" has the task of transferring the stresses on the anchors and, through them, to the
rock in depth. In particular, their function is to mitigate the risk due to the detachment of earthen coulters and / or
detrital material (collapses or landslides).
There are many difficulties encountered in securing the phenomenon of cortical instability since such interventions
require, without any controversy, an increasingly specialized degree of preparation for new technologies and new
innovative products. In fact, the designers often have to solve major problems in a very short time due to the urgency
and danger of the situation, finding in a short time an optimal solution that reduces the level of risk, the nature of the
instabilities without altering the landscape aspect . They are also involved contracting companies, with their executive
7. order limits of the wall operators and finally the manufacturing industries of materials, such as the wire mesh , the bars
for nails or anchors, the cements and resins which still c ' it is a low degree of knowledge.
Starting from the state of the art, the first step is undoubtedly to begin to systematically investigate the intervention
solutions linked to geological problems and to identify in advance, with adequate means and sufficient forecasting
ability, the behavior of the materials to be used. To highlight the use of resins, as a consolidating and / or waterproof
sealing system of the fractures present in the cortical thickness from 1 - 2 m, capable of increasing the resistance to
cutting along these lines, thus also lightening the subsequent work of the anchors increasing the resistance of the rock
mass against the chemical-physical action of the percolation waters. In fact, the realization of this waterproof and /
or stabilizing barrier allows to increase the consolidating forces by improving the geotechnical characteristics of the
whole rock mass, reducing most of the risk factors that could arise in the future.
Therefore, we can divide the consolidation systems into two macro families:
The SURFACE- type consolidation systems : those that perform multiple functions in cortical reinforcement applications
such as the control of surface erosion and the greening of escarpments. Part of this type of intervention is
the "geocomposite" system consisting of a double twist type metal mesh coupled, in the production phase, with natural
coconut or metal geotextiles, or the three-dimensional anti-erosion polypropylene carpet system incorporated in a network
of high tensile steel wire. Much has been said about this type of superficial consolidation and much literature has been
produced on this topic.
The ACTIVE type of consolidation systems : Used when there is an unstable thickness of rock up to about 2 m deep, and
essentially consists in the installation of anchor bars (shear strength) perpendicular to the sliding surface , combined with
a high-strength steel mesh , thanks to which the system acts synergistically as the bars are connected to each other thanks to
the high mechanical strength of the mesh.
The active stabilization system, as already mentioned, is one of the most recent technological innovations offered by the
international market and is used for combined protection against erosion, falling rock debris, for intervention on landslides,
for deep instabilities and for securing the slopes. It is practically suitable for almost all types of slopes, regardless of
whether they are rocky and solid or unstable and covered with soil or other materials.
Therefore, below I will illustrate the elements used for the ACTIVE type system for the consolidation and / or
strengthening of the cortical layer:
Metal nets
The nets applied on the rock walls have the purpose of controlling or preventing the development of cortical instabilities
that occur with the detachment of boulders and distinguish two categories of protection nets:
- simple protection nets generally fixed only at the top;
- nets combined with a systematic nailing of the wall with a mesh of anchors aimed at more unstable cortical
strengthening. In this case, a double twist net is preferably used, capable of avoiding the spread of damage inside the
structure due to local breakage of the steel wires. The wire of the mesh can usually have different degrees of protection
(strong galvanization, eutectic alloy of ZN.AL, plastic polymers) depending on the durability needs related to the
application area. The tensile strength value of a wire mesh must be between 350-500 N / mm2
in accordance with EN
10223-3 standards.
The bars for nailing or anchoring
The bars usually consist of active or passive point elements and are generally composed of steel material with improved
adherence Ø 30 mm, hollow bars of the self-perforating type, nails in B450C, steel strands usable as nails or poles or
drill bits for all soils and rocks.
Lately self-drilling bars are used a lot, which are made up of a non-returnable drill bit which varies according to the
type of soil. A wide range of variants is available on the market capable of supporting ultimate loads from 210 kN to
1,900 kN and which are supplied with all the related components: tips, sleeves, centering devices, heads and distribution
plates to be used according to specific applications. The fields of application can be the most varied but mainly they are
used for slopes, excavations, for the fixing of rockfall nets, avalanche barriers and for foundations and slabs.
Cements
Today, almost everything is known about cement. As is known, the main problem in the use of the cement grout to clog
/ anchor the bars for nailing or anchoring to the rock, is the withdrawal due to a volume variation caused, during the
setting and hardening phase, by the progressive elimination of the water it contains. This phenomenon is all the more
marked the faster the loss of water from the mass and determines the onset of cracks with consequent repercussion on
its durability.
Today, fluidifying and expanding additives are used to make fluid and non-shrink grouts for injection. The expansive
effect allows you to completely cancel the hydraulic shrinkage and to give the grout an expansion both in the plastic and
8. hardening phase. The anti-shrinkage grouts are able to guarantee greater durability even if, unlike the "resins, during the
injection phase they tend to remain limited to the drilling area of the anchor bar, penetrating with great difficulty into
the interstices present in the fractured rock. .
Types of mixtures
Of the resinous formulations, object of this article, I will speak briefly below, while now I will limit myself to
illustrating the most common stable suspensions:
- Cement-water.
I would just like to point out that its characteristics improve a lot with the addition of a small percentage of bentonite
(1 - 7% on the weight of the cement);
- Cement-clay;
- Expanded mixtures.
Very useful application when filling large cavities and subsequently clogging with resinous formulations.
The use of injections of resinous formulations in the "cortical instability", used especially as a consolidating system in
the thickness of 1 - 2 m of the rock masses or at the same time as the nailing or anchoring bars, are techniques that are
not yet given the right importance.
The deterioration of our environment requires increasing annual maintenance programs, only to maintain current
operating levels. From an environmental and ecological point of view, some resinous formulations are also available
today which provide effective solutions in terms of much longer durability than other products and with very low
maintenance costs.
The operational methodology of this type of intervention consists in injecting a formulation of chemical resin capable of
penetrating also into the clay formations, thus increasing the cohesion of the soil, so as to avoid sagging, collapsing or
falling of rocky volumes of the front, and in particular way by improving the mechanical resistance of the rock mass.
We would like to point out that the injectability depends above all on the hydraulic characteristics of the rock mass,
which are in turn influenced by the degree of fracturing, by the characteristics of the discontinuities and by the
mechanical properties such as deformability and original stress state.
Unlike the grout, the resin injection formulation has particular properties capable of ensuring good penetration in
fractures, low viscosity, zero shrinkage, an absence of leaching and good mechanical resistance to compression.
In fact, from our specific knowledge gained in the field we have noted several times that the consolidation intervention
carried out using grout has a much lower durability than that performed with resins due to the little expandability of the
substance in the rock mass.
For this reason we recommend, for this type of problem, to intervene through a system of "injections" with formulations
of resins directly in the cracks in order to fill any void present in the rock, including "pores" [1] and "capillaries", and
eliminate water infiltrations of any nature.
By operating in this way, the first 2 meters of the rock mass thus treated becomes completely compact and cohesive
with the homogeneous rock behind it, waterproof even if the presence of water is of a negative hydrostatic nature.
Normally, the operating method adopted to perform injections into the rock mass normally takes place, according to the
following phases:
- Creation of holes with a diameter of 13 mm, with a depth varying from 3-5 cm, and with an interval of three holes of
30-50 cm.
- Installation of "packers" equipped with ball valves.
- Execution of injections carried out through special multipurpose pumps with variable parameters, with dosages that
can vary in volumetric proportion, also ensuring constant flow both in flow and pressure.
An important precaution to be adopted at this stage, for a work done in a workmanlike manner, is that of not putty the
cracks because, having an overall view of the treated area, we are able to evaluate the "path" of the resin in the rocky
mass and therefore being able to dose or even temporarily interrupt its flow. The injectability of the resin depends on
the degree of cracking, on the discontinuities of the same, on the mechanical properties such as deformability and stress
state of the rock mass.
The resin injection mixture must have conditions such as to ensure good penetration in the lesions, low viscosity, no
shrinkage and leaching and good compressive strength. It must not contain fine particles so it can penetrate all the
cracks and voids like water.
9. The formulation to be injected must be a resin (resinous formulation), without expansion capacity, with high
mechanical strength and high chemical stability and must not be polluting.
In fact, the use of the type of resin that I propose must meet the above requirements and also respond to the Test
Reports of the "TRANSFER TESTS" (UNI EN 12457-2 Method) for the use of the resin in presence of groundwater
according to Legislative Decree no. 152/06 P.IV-TV- Annex 5 Tab and to the "TRANSFER TEST" for the use of the
resin in the presence of water for human use according to Legislative Decree No. 31/01. This type of product, studied
and developed by the author, is specifically used to solve the type of problem faced in this article. In fact, the reaction of
the formulation is irreversible and the mixing between the two components "A" and "B" must take place in very short
times (1 - 2 minutes at + 18° C.). In the presence of particular working situations or in adverse weather conditions it is
possible to modify this chemical reaction by adding an accelerating additive in component "A". In addition, the
presence of water, the diluent par excellence, during the injection operations must in no way influence the course of the
chemical reaction or the expandability of the product since the latter is mainly of an inorganic nature.
Analyzing the coring carried out at the end of the works to verify the correct execution of the intervention, it should be
noted that the material has an elasticity and excellent adhesion to the various types of material constituting the rock
mass. It must also be self-extinguishing.
We conclude by reporting a phrase taken from the geotechnical legislation which states: "The value of the safety factor
will be assumed by the designer and justified on the basis of considerations relating to the level of knowledge achieved
and the degree of reliability of the available data, the complexity of the geological and geotechnical situation , the local
experience on natural slopes in similar situations, as well as the consequence of a possible landslide".
Therefore, we allow ourselves to underline that in the design phase it is necessary to be aware of as much data as
possible including the compatibility requirements of the various materials and the different durability of the elements.
[1] Porosity, is perhaps the most indicative element for the preventive assessment of the injectability of a soil, increases with
decreasing particle size. The injectable media have porosity values between 0.2 and 0.35 for the coarser, and between 0.35
and 0.5 for the finer ones.
