4. HACKING TASK
IronHacks: Not your ordinary hackathon
Traditional ‘Hackathons’ The Purdue IronHacks
36 hrs of high energy; less creativity
~ 1 month: 5x high-energy hacking + time for
creativity
Proprietary code: no sharing with others Open access: shared and can build on others’ code
Mentorship during the 36 hrs;
Feedback on final solution
5 iterations: hackers get valuable technical, market,
and user feedback from experts; constant guidance
Constant physical presence and interaction
Virtual presence and communication;
hackers can work on problems when they wish
GOAL:
Facilitate entrepreneurial individuals to turn open data into digital
innovations (mash-ups) that create value for citizens.
5. “Find me a safe and affordable district to rent near NYU Stern School of Business, NYC”
The user scenario: Imagine you are living in New York City (NY) as a new student at NYU Stern School of
Business and you want help others that have no knowledge about the city to find an area to live that is
safe, affordable and close to the university
HACKING TASK
The task: develop a mashup to help a student find a safe and affordable place to live in
new york city (1/2)
Your task
• Develop a mashup that integrates, analyses and interactively displays open data in
order to support new students to evaluate and rank the 59 habitable districts in New
York City (in total there are the 71 districts but only 59 are habitable districts and 12
green areas; see details on these districts and the classification in New York’s 5
boroughs.
• Your mash-up should allow the new students to rank and compare the various districts
using a diverse set of decision parameters (colloquially also called metrics). Your app
should allow students to find the top 10 districts in New York City based single
parameters ranking and and the top 3 districts based on average of the three following
parameters:
1) Safety
2) Distance to NYU Stern School of Business (Note: the distance must be from the
center of the district to NYU Stern School of Business).
3) Affordability (Note: affordability levels are based on average income).
6. THE TASK: DEVELOP A MASHUP TO HELP A STUDENT FIND A SAFE AND AFFORDABLE PLACE TO
LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY (2/2)
Remember that this task of a mashup design relates to three equally important sub-tasks:
TECHNOLOGY
• Develop a usable and
technologically sound app
• Reduce software errors
and create a great
software structure
• Meet technical
requirements
ANALYTICS
• Create exportable tables
that allow the user to rank
the districts using numeric
presentations of decision
parameters
• Use mandatory
parameters (Single and
joint parameter ranking)
• Be unique and create
additional parameters
INFORMATION
VISUALIZATION
Allow the user to visually rank
and compare the districts
using
• Charts (static and/or
interactive)
• an interactive map (using
the Google API)
HACKING TASK
7. Mandatory technological requirements make sure that we have a fair competition
There are a few requirements that you need to meet for each sub-task and dimension:
Technological requirements:
1. The website integrates a mash-up, a web page that combines data and functionalities
from different sources in an interactive way.
2. We expect your web based mash-up to contain three components: (1) exportable tables
with numeric presentation of decision parameters, (2) maps, and (3) charts
3. If the application uses standard libraries they must be a part of the eligible list of
libraries (check eligible datasets on www.ironhacks.com/task). We want this to be a fair
competition.
4. Your submission should come with a Readme file (see template of a Readme file).
5. The readme file contains the following content: Keywords, brief description, a unique
identifier of the author, link to dataset used (plus description) (see guidelines
6. The application is written in JavaScript language.
7. Your app should be a single page website with a navigation bar.
HACKING TASK
8. Mandatory technological requirements make sure that we have a fair competition
Analytical requirements:
1. Your app uses the 3 mandatory decision parameters available in the 4 mandatory
dataset
2. Use at least 2 additional datasets from our curated list (look at the eligible list of
datasets on www.ironhacks.com/task) in addition to the 4 mandatory datasets.
3. Your app correctly extracts all 59 districts, represents the districts in a table
4. Your correctly groups the 59 districts into the 5 boroughs in New York City, NY
5. The app gives users access to a table that ranks the districts with respect to the 3
minimum parameters (safety, affordability, distance)
6. Your app allows the users to export and download the table(s) (in .csv format).
Visualization requirements
1. The application uses D3.js to create maps and charts.
2. Map requirements: Your app shows the border of all the 59 districts on Google map
3. Your app should not have Pictures.
4. Map: Your app includes a Google map (using the google API) with a geo-spatial starting
position of NYU Stern (40.7291° N, 73.9965° W).
HACKING TASK
9. TECHNOLOGY
• Has a low number of
errors (relative to the
size of the app)
• Meets minimum
technical
requirements
• Maintainable code
structure
ANALYTICS
• Analytical
performance:
Correctly extracts the
metrics need to solve
the analytical
requirements
• Extract and create
additional metrics
INFORMATION
VISUALIZATION
• Affords recognizable
interactions
• Displays metrics in
interactive maps
• Visualizes metrics in
multi-dimensional
charts
We use a rigorous methodology to score the three dimensions; the performance on
does not influence to other one so you can focus your effort
Performance Evaluation
HACKING TASK
11. 1. Rule #1: Commit at least 1 new version of your app via our social coding platform in each of the 5 coding phases. A
commit implies significant amount of value-adding code, that is, code that aims to fulfill the task specified above.
Empty or non-sense commits are not eligible.
2. Rule #2: Do not work in teams as IronHacks is an individual competition.
3. Rule #3: During the contest, follow the Purdue honor code: minimum of 50% of your code needs to be your own.
Official libraries are not considered when verifying your adherence to this rule. You are asked to provide official credits
to other sources when submitting your final app in each round. (Note: we have algorithms checking for your adherence
to this rule).
4. Rule #4: All general discussions should take place via the discussion forum on www.Ironhacks.Com. You are not allowed
to discuss your submissions with others outside of this forum. You have access to your results
(www.Ironhacks.Com/results). Your personal dashboard contains confidential information. Do NOT share this.
5. Rule #5: To qualify for an award you must have completed the pre- and post-hack surveys. Furthermore, you are asked
to fill in some important information related to your app when making the final commit in a phase (final submission for
grading). If you do not provide that information, we will not consider your submission.
6. Rule #6: IronHacks follows the concept of openness. We will not own your code. By participating in IronHacks you
acknowledge that your software can be used by others for non-commercial purposes as long as they acknowledge it.
We will use the creative commons license.
There are 6 important rules
