1. OFFICIAL RULES 2016 FIRE FIGHTING CHALLENGE
Goal:To design,build,andprograma robot thatcan locate andextinguish4randomlyplacedcandlesinsideafield
describedbyablack line. The firstcandle isinplainview of the startingpositionof the robot,the remainingthree
candlesare obstructedby walls. The fasteryou can extinguishthe 4candlesincreasesyouroverall score.

Teamsof 2 to 4 playersinseparate divisionsfor:

● HighSchool/BigKids
RequiredMaterials:
● Autonomousrobot(anyplatform,costing$1,500 USD or less,andmeetsthe followingdesignconstraints,which
will be verifiedduring check-in:
For Check-In:
o Robotcan demonstrate itisrunningaprogram that can control the start and stopof itsextinguishing
systemviaa sensorthat interactswitheitherthe candle orthe circle the candle isplacedon
o If usinga highspeedpropeller,robotmusthave a safetyguardinplace

● NEW 2016: Boundaryborderwill be constructedusingwhite andblackduct
tape not the vinyl borderwe have usedin the past.
● Challenge fieldis2.44 m by 3.66 m and will be describedbya7.5 cm wide
boundaryconstructedfromwhite ducttape witha 2.5 cm blackduct tape line
centereddownthe white tape.
● The Candle flame is25.5 cm tall,7cm wide,andusesaoil burnerto produce a
consistentflame.
● The Candlesare placedon a white vinyl circle thatis40.5 cm indiameterandhas
a 2.5 cm black line thatis 2.5 cm inside the outeredge.The circle hasa5 cm
diameterblackcircle atits centertoindicate where the candle willbe placed.
● There are (3) Wallsthat are 46 cm wide and43 cm tall. Theyare heldupbya
woodenbase thatis3.5 cm tall andspans the entire widthof the wall.
● CandlesandWallswill be randomlyplacedforeveryrun. One candle willalways
be in plainviewof the robotat the beginningof the run
● The Challenge isruninan area that has a skylightabove it. Asthe day
progressesthe sunchangespositionandthe lightfromabove isaconstant
changingvariable inbothpositionandbrightness.
General rulesofplay during the Fire FightingChallenge:
1. Robotwill startthe challenge ataspot on the borderchosenbythe Challenge Oficial.
2. The firstcandle will be inplainview of the robotatthe start of the challenge.
3. The robot has 3 minutestoextinguishthe 4candles.
4. OnlyPlayerscanoperate andmanipulate the robotduringthe heat(Playersplay,CoachesCoach)
5. If a player touchesthe robot after the challenge has begun,the time stops and the challenge will be scored
based on the number of candlesextinguishedwhenthe robot was touched.
6. Official trackswill be available topractice onwhennotinuse by competitorsattemptinganofficial run.
7. You will onlyget 10 official runs this year during the qualificationperiod (your5 highestqualifyingscores,
determine whogetsintothe tournament.Triathlonteamswill use theirhighest3qualifyingscores).
2. Scoring:
● SCORING PERIOD; FRIDAY, MAY6TH, 8:00A TO 5:00P; SATURDAY, MAY7TH, 8:00A TO NOON - Teams are
STRONGLY recommendedtobeginscoring theirrobots on Friday,May 6th to insure theywill get the
minimumscored runs in by NOON,Sat. May 7th.
● The overall score isa combinationof pointsearnedduringthe challenge attemptaddedtothe numberof
secondsremainingonce the lastcandle isextinguished

Time Bonus: Clockcounts down from 180 secondsand stops when the robot extinguishes
the fourth candle

* Penalty Rules:
(50% off the point value for the candle when a penalty has been awarded)
1. Robot’s extinguishing system is engaged before any part of robot is over the white circle.
2. Robot touches the candle in the process of extinguishing the flame.
(The process of extinguishing the candle is not complete until the flame is out, and all the parts of the robot are no
longer over the white circle).
3. Previously extinguished candles become obstacles in the playfield, and do not count as a
penalty when touched.
The WilkinsonAward: Any Team that Extinguishesall 4 candlesin lessthan three minutesduring the
Tournament will receive a cash award of $200 (onlyawarded once per team)
Tournament scoring:
● The top eight teams will compete in the final tournament.
● Advancing teams will be seeded into the tournament bracket according to their aggregate score

However, we recognize that occasionally the need arises to question something that occurs during the course
of play. When this occurs we expect all parties to exhibit courtesy and respect.
1. Students must bring their questions/concerns to the person running the track or course at the time of
the incident. The coach or assistant coach should be present during the student to official discussion
2. Should a question still exist following that discussion, then the coach or assistant coach should address
the question directly to the Challenge Officials in charge of the respective Challenge
3. If the issue is not resolved at that level, then please file a written appeal to the Event Coordinators
using the appeal process form (Click Here for Appeals Form)
4. All appeal decisions by Event Coordinators are final
