The document demonstrates that while some schools have established projects, many are still working to develop new environmental initiatives.
This document discusses sustainability initiatives in Northwest Arkansas schools. It describes how green teams in schools across the region focus on reducing waste and recycling. It also discusses how school districts have incorporated more sustainable practices into building designs and infrastructure to reduce costs and environmental impact. Several schools in the area have established outdoor classrooms and gardens for hands-on learning about the environment. The initiatives aim to teach students the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Students in Newton, Iowa worked to change the name of a local creek from "Sewer Creek" to "Cardinal Creek" as a community project. Their AP biology class studied the creek and worked to raise awareness of its importance. They conducted polls, wrote letters, and gave presentations to change the creek's name through official channels. Adopting the school mascot "Cardinal" as the new name has given the creek visibility and transformed it into a source of pride for the town. Future classes will continue environmental studies of the creek and develop restoration plans.

Audrey Lau created The Greenhouse Project at Pioneer High School in 2008. She and classmates took over a dilapidated greenhouse and obtained grants to create a native plant nursery. Audrey cleared out debris and established the greenhouse for seeding and transferring plants. She opened it to student volunteers and started plant giveaways and school gardens. Audrey also visited an elementary school to teach lessons about the environment. In total, The Greenhouse Project distributed over 16,000 native plants over three years, involved students, inspired young learners, and encouraged community action.
A summary and evaluation of projects carried out September 11 and 12, 2010, in Syracuse, New York, as part of Acts of Kindness A-OK! Weekend. Organized by Women Transcending Boundaries.

The School Garden Network focuses on teaching elementary school children about healthy eating and sustainability through school gardens and cooking lessons using produce grown in the gardens. The goal is for every elementary school in San Diego County to have its own garden or small farm to grow food. Students will learn about local food systems through field trips and applying lessons in the school gardens. Each garden will have a kitchen where chefs teach students to cook healthy, delicious meals using the garden produce. The program aims to improve students' health and educate them about locally grown food.
The document outlines the process of establishing an urban farm at The Bridge residence in the Bronx, including initial planning meetings in January to establish goals, designing the farm layout in February, and breaking ground and preparing beds in March by laying out the design, turning over soil, removing grass, and adding compost to improve soil quality. The farm was intended to provide fresh produce for residents while also offering work and nutrition education opportunities.
The document summarizes Burnham Grammar School's Eco Week activities, which aim to promote environmental awareness and limit the school's environmental impact. This document summarizes a capstone design project report for an Autonomous Vehicle Learning System (AVLS). The project involved designing an autonomous vehicle that can navigate a mock city using computer vision, networking, and route optimization algorithms. A software simulation was also created to model how the AVLS could optimize traffic flow on a large scale. The simulation showed that an optimal AVLS system without human traffic could improve average vehicle speed by 20% and reduce travel times by up to 66% compared to traditional traffic. The project demonstrated capabilities for autonomous vehicles to optimize traffic through decentralized data collection and routing.

Clarksville Middle School Green School Applicationsvinje
Clarksville Middle School has worked to become a Maryland Green School through various environmental initiatives. Students, faculty, and community members have focused on waste reduction, energy conservation, habitat restoration, and increasing environmental education. Key accomplishments include Clarksville MS being the first middle school in the county to implement a food composting program, 7th grade partnerships on stream restoration and Bay studies, and student groups raising trout and restoring habitats. The school celebrates its green efforts through annual runs and picnics that encourage reusable water bottles and proper waste sorting.
The document provides information on several school gardens that will be part of the 2019 Brooklyn School Gardens Crawl. It includes the addresses, public transportation options, and themes for each garden. The gardens range from established gardens over 10 years old focusing on native plants and rebuilding after storms, to newer gardens designed for accessibility and enjoyment by all, to gardens used as outdoor classrooms and for growing a variety of vegetables, herbs and plants.

The potential for greening school grounds as partaslfadmin
Samuel H. Sage of the Atlantic States Legal Foundation presents the potential for implementing outdoor education programs at schools located near creeks and natural areas in Syracuse, NY. Such programs have been successfully implemented in other areas and provide hands-on, cross-curricular learning while reconnecting children with nature. The Atlantic States Legal Foundation could help schools develop outdoor classrooms, secure funding, and collaborate with other local organizations.
Project Green Schools is a nonprofit organization that has educated over 6,000 schools and 500,000 students nationwide since 2007 on environmental education. It has developed 583 green student leaders who have contributed over 14,000 hours of environmental service work. Project Green Schools aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve water quality, expand alternative transportation, and help develop the next generation of environmental leaders through its innovative programming in schools.
The Cornucopia Project connects students in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire to farming and healthy eating through hands-on gardening and cooking programs. The project began in 2006 with a community garden and has since expanded to work with five local schools. At the schools, students plant, tend, and harvest school gardens and learn about nutrition. Produce from the gardens is used in school cafeterias and cooking lessons. The goal is for students to understand where their food comes from and develop healthy eating habits through actively participating in growing and preparing fresh, local foods.
Design of Outdoor Education and Active Play EnvironmentsDan Curry
The document discusses design strategies for outdoor education and play environments to support environmental literacy in early childhood education. It provides 3 key objectives: 1) build community through effective site programming, 2) promote child development through site design, and 3) support curriculum through outdoor education and stormwater design. The document then summarizes initiatives by the District of Columbia Public Schools to incorporate outdoor learning, gardening, cooking and environmental education programs. It provides examples of projects completed through the RiverSmart Schools Program that integrated stormwater management with opportunities for play, learning and community engagement.

The Spokane Edible Tree Project aims to map and harvest fruit from trees across Spokane County to provide food for those in need. They received a grant from the Smith-Barbieri Progressive Fund to expand their fruit mapping initiative. So far they have mapped over 7,500 fruit and nut trees and bushes across the county. Their goal is to collect hundreds of thousands of pounds of fruit each year to donate to food banks and distribute to hungry community members.
The Spokane Edible Tree Project aims to map and harvest fruit from trees across Spokane County to provide food for those in need. They received a grant from the Smith-Barbieri Progressive Fund to expand their mapping of fruit-bearing trees throughout the county, which currently numbers over 7,500 trees. The project collects unpicked fruit from orchards and homeowners that would otherwise go to waste, and distributes it to food banks and those experiencing hunger. Their goal is to collect hundreds of thousands of pounds of fruit annually to help meet the growing need in Spokane County.
Peter Smyntek, et al, St. Vincent College - “Screen to Stream – Student citiz...Michael Hewitt, GISP
This document describes the Screen to Stream environmental education initiative between Saint Vincent College, local watershed groups, and school districts. The initiative aims to develop virtual and field-based resources to teach students about aquatic ecosystem and water quality monitoring so they can become citizen scientists. It will provide an interactive online learning lab, mobile apps, and lessons linked to state standards. Students will learn to observe chemical and biological indicators of issues like abandoned mine drainage and nutrient pollution. The resources will build off prior programs to make them more accessible. Feedback is requested on developing the initiative further and finding new volunteers as many involved in past cleanup efforts are retiring.

“Glenelg Country School does have two native plant rain gardens in the back of
our upper school. We put the first garden in three years ago and it is doing very
well. The second garden was put in last year and we were pleased that the
plants in our new garden survived the unusually harsh winter and it also has
many healthy looking plants. The school's community service club is mainly
responsible for maintaining it.
In addition to that, we have a 40' X 40' fenced in vegetable garden which is also
behind our upper school. The Upper School Farm and Garden Club maintains
this garden during the school year and camp programs and some summer staff
help keep it going over the summer.
There also is another smaller flower and vegetable garden behind the primary
school (We are a PreK-12 school with four divisions.) This garden is planted
each year by children in the 1st grade.
Students in the Environmental Club also have put in a native plant riparian buffer
along the banks of the small stream that runs into the school's pond.”

“We do quite a bit regarding environmental activities at Dunloggin. 8 years ago,
we started a large scale and on-going stream restoration/ wetland construction
project that also serves as the 7th grade student service learning project. Each
year, the 7th grade students remove trash from 2 local streams that run adjacent
to school property, they remove invasive species from the area, they plant native
species throughout the year to provide wildlife habitat, and also participate in
macro-invertebrate samplings to test the water quality of the streams. 7th grade
students also take an annual field trip to the Phillip Merrill Environmental Education
Center of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The students also have worked with
the Howard County Office of Environmental Sustainability the past 2 years to plant
trees at Rockburn Park and behind Dunloggin Middle/ Northfield Elementary to
help re-establish forested buffers. For the past 2 years, a group of students with
an interest in marine biology have participated in an Oyster Gardening Project in
conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Don Meritt from the UMCES-
Horn Point Oyster Hatchery. The students provide care for cultivated oysters at
the Kentmorr Marina in Stevensville, Maryland which are then released onto
sanctuary reefs during the field trip to the Merrill Center in the spring. The oyster
gardening group follows an action plan (AR:CPS Action Research fro Community
Problem Solving) developed in part by Mr. Claude Poudrier, an educator from
Montreal, Canada along with support from the Alcoa Foundation. This past year,
we established a partnership with Mr. Brian Knox of Eco-Goats to provide a yearly
presentation on how goats provide a natural way of removing invasive species
without the use of pesticides. This past year we also participated in the Raising
Horseshoe Crabs in the Classroom project through the Maryland Dept. of Natural
Resources and next year will be participating in the Raising Striped Bass in the

this precious resource. This past spring, representatives from North Bay came to
Dunloggin to help build a butterfly garden in the back of the school which will be
maintained by future 6th grade students. We were honored this past year to have
Governor O'Malley visit our school and hear presentations on all of the
environmentally friendly activities going on at DMS. Dunloggin is a Maryland
Green School and also the only U.S. Green Ribbon School in Howard County!”

o PLANNING A RAIN GARDEN
o VEGETABLE GARDEN
June 16, 2014
“We are currently in the planning stages to create a rain garden during the 2014-
2015 school year.
Harper's Choice Middle School has planted a vegetable garden on the school
property that is currently home to tomato, cucumber, and a variety of pepper
plants. This garden was conceived of by a group of students who stayed with it
from the planning and approval to actually requesting permission and building
and planting. We are a certified Green School and hope that the 2014-2015
school year will allow us to expand our initiatives. This year we conducted an
energy audit, participated in Earth Hour where every room in the school turned
off their lights for one hour, posted save water reminders, made sure each
classroom had recycle bins and posted reminders on all the light switches in the
building to conserve energy. The entire 7th grade weeded our flower gardens
and identified areas that needed wood chips and mulching.”

“We do not have a rain garden.
Mayfield is uniquely located at the end of a cul-de-sac surrounded by native
trees. We have labeled about 4 storm drains on the campus for staff and the
local community. We used grant money to purchase 'bankers' lamps for staff
members who requested them. A "lights out campaign" was started in the
building and supported by the morning news briefs. Weekly recycled is a major
part of our school culture. Any other efforts are documented on the school's web-
site.”

June 10, 2014
“Mount View does not have a rain garden, but we do have 3 native plant gardens
and one butterfly garden that is a certified monarch waystation.
Additional land improvements include painted drains and an outdoor classroom
with benches made from recycled plastic.
We are also working to restore permeable pavement (concrete lattice style) that
has become compacted with clay soil over the years. Students are digging out
the compacted soil and adding gravel. This is a multi-year project.
We have a green school website that you can visit for even more information:

June 13, 2014
“Yes, we do have a couple of rain gardens at our school. They are located in our
recess area, between the blacktop, the main fields, and the baseball fields. We
have been learning about them over the past two years with the help of Howard
County Master Gardeners- though I would like to learn more about them.
We created a website for our Green School application this year, in case you
would like to know more about what we have been doing here in terms of
responsible stewardship. While it is comprehensive, it is not complete (as it does
not mention our rain gardens in any detail). Here is our website:

“We currently have a rain garden that was created last year by a student that
was working on his Eagle Scout Project. The only thing is that the deer have
eaten all of the plants. We also have a butterfly garden. It was planted many
years ago and is still thriving because most of the plants are native.
We built an outdoor classroom and bird garden. Our students are part of Project
FeederWatch. We have also participated in the Governor's Explore and Restore
your Schoolshed Initiative this year. We have adopted a section of the Patapsco
River near the Daniel's Dam area. Students participated in a stream survey,
pulled invasive plants, and picked up trash twice a year. We have a great
partnership with Patapsco Heritage Greeenway.
We have been a Green School since 2008. Our fifth grade Earth Force Team has
improved the recycling center in the cafeteria this year. Students in 4th and 5th
grade are now composting and we have reduced the amount of trash that goes
to the landfill.
This year we have spent part of the year providing our staff with professional
development in the are of energy conservation and project based learning. Next
year's theme will be energy conservation. The teachers will take what they
learned and apply it to their classrooms.
Some of our staff also went on a Chesapeake Bay Foundation boat trip on the
Patapsco River to help raise awareness of the impact humans have on the Bay.”

“Thank you for contacting me. I have led the green team at sjles for the past 10
years or so. We have had varying degrees of activity over the years - this one
has been one of the slow years.
An overview of projects we have had in the past are:
4th Grade students recycling program
Gifted and Talented Tree project
Energy monitors
Indoor plant group
Native plant garden out front and on the side of the school
Student led plantings
Erosion control on playground
Ink and cell phone recycling
Collaborative projects and assemblies w/HC Conservancy, Master
Gardeners, Engineers, and so on.
We do not have a rain garden currently but are looking to have one in the next
few years. I am happy to answer any other questions you may have.”
