This document discusses the fallacy of separating somatic and psychological symptoms. It argues that they often co-occur and share common etiological factors like genetic vulnerability and environmental influences. Examples are provided of diseases like depression that are linked to both psychological and cardiovascular issues. The current paradigm is one of gene-environment interaction over the lifespan. Childhood adversity is highlighted as an important environmental factor impacting later health. There is a need for an integrated approach that considers both biological and psychological aspects of diseases. Separating them can have negative consequences like stigmatization and less effective research, training, and healthcare systems.
