Alternative Fuels and High-Efficiency Vehicles – Update for Fleets
Wednesday, April 24 10:15 – 11:45 am
The landscape of alternative fuels and advanced vehicles is rapidly changing, capabilities are improving and it is hard for fleets to keep up. This session will provide a valuable 10-thousand foot overview of the latest products available today, the technology emerging in the near term and what these technologies and fuels can mean to fleet operations. This is a valuable session both for fleets just trying to get up to speed on this arena, and as an update for fleets already active but wanting to stay current.

A report commissioned by T&E and Greenpeace suggests the EU can more than halve its existing carbon dioxide emissions from new cars with existing technology. The report, by Ricardo-AEA, says the right mixture of electric, hybrid and conventionally-fuelled cars will enable Europe to reach a target of 60 grams per kilometre from the average new car in 2025.
In 2011, the average emissions from new cars sold in the EU was 136 g/km. A 95g target has been set for 2020, although MEPs and ministers are still working out how this will be achieved. The USA aims to halve emissions from new cars by 2025 and environmental campaigners are keen to ensure the EU matches America’s level of ambition.
The T&E/Greenpeace study shows that a target of 60g could be achieved if up to 24% of new vehicles were electric, another 24% hybrids and the remaining 52% conventional (petrol and diesel) cars. A target of 70g would require only a modest share of electric cars (7%), which is at the very low-end of conservative market projections for electric vehicles by 2025. The remainder would come from hybrids (22%) and conventional petrol/diesel cars (71%). A supporting briefing prepared by T&E shows that the costs of technology are likely to be paid back within a few years.
T&E cars officer Greg Archer said: ‘This report helps bring some clarity about what can be achieved with existing technology and with a modest boost from sales of electric cars. Setting a 2025 target now will give the industry the regulatory certainty it needs to invest in electric alternatives now.”

Gazprom presents at Czech Gas Association event on NGV developmentBlueCorridorRally
Gazprom Export’s NGV advisor Eugene Pronin was in Prague this month to participate in the Czech Gas Association’s sixth conference on “Prospects for the Development and Use of CNG/LNG in Transport.” Speaking on a panel alongside Czech, German, Hungarian, Slovak, Polish and Bulgarian industry leaders, Pronin discussed Gazprom’s participation in building the market and infrastructure to support natural gas vehicles in Europe.
In his presentation, available for download on bluecorridor.org, Pronin shared his forecast for demand for natural gas as a vehicle fuel, showing CNG and LNG for use in transport in Europe increasing from 3,3 Bcm in 2012 to 43,0 Bcm in 2030. Gazprom subsidiaries Gazprom Germania and Vemex in Czech Republic already operate a number of CNG/LNG filling stations and recently announced plans to more than double that network by 2015.
Moreover, Gazprom is working actively with European gas companies E.ON and OMV, auto manufacturers Volvo and Mercedes and specialized industrial vehicle manufacturers Iveco, Kamaz and Solbus to expand the market and supporting infrastructure for a technology that is already bringing economic and environmental benefits to Europe. Gazprom and our industry partners are pleased to be working with the European Union, United Nations and International Gas Union, along with other political organizations, to expand access to NGV technology – and its benefits – to a broader market.
The presentation describes CNG infrastructure investments by Bonett Gas Investments in various cities in the Czech Republic, including Prague and Kladno. Many of these investments focus on fueling stations.

17. Comparison CNG and LNG
Pro’s Pro’s
Proven technology available here and today • Higher energy density than CNG resulting in
Choice of vehicles available with new models smaller tanks, less weight and higher mileage
being added by the automotive industry • Lower weight of vehicles resulting in higher
Generally able to meet EU 6 standards utilization of fuel efficiency
“Zero” or reduced excise duty in many • For buses: lower centre of gravity due to
European countries, expected to last until 2030 lighter fuel tank mounted inside the vehicle
results in higher driving comfort
Con’s • Reduced excise duty with high chances of
sustainability until 2030 (as for CNG, but in
Extra weight of gas cylinders decreases fuel
some countries CNG and LNG are treated
efficiency and driving performance
differently)
For buses: sometimes height restrictions for low
bridges due to mounting of storage on the roof
Con’s
Lower energy density than conventional fuels or
LNG • New and well tested technology, but refuelling
infrastructure yet to be developed
Excise duty regimes converge towards traditional
fuel taxation • More complex supply chain than for CNG
requires reliable partners for supply + refuelling
• Choice of OEM vehicles still limited
