6. APAN 34th Meeting Dancing Across Ocean II
About the Performance
Main concept
• 10 min. performance of short episode
• The performance tells the story of communications and interactions between ground
control station(Sri Lanka) and a spaceship(Korea) set in a space exploration.
• The BGM is re-arranged from David Bowie’s original song “Space Oddity”(1969).
• Characters
– Astronaut
– Lady
– Ground control staffs
7. Choreographic Aspects
• Articulation
Because of the time delay and network’s instability, we will try to reduce the sequential data
by regulating the actor’s movement per frame. The players mostly move their corporal articulation one by
one, so the audience could follow the story regardless of the possible data loss during the play.
• Mirror image
The camera in Sri Lanka will capture the actor’s performing, and the images will be shown in
Korea with little time delay. The actor in Korea mirrors the received movements, and they will be
presented like mirror images at the same time in one screen. The actors may copy each other or/and act
with their own ways.
• Movement in Space
We set an imaginary space station in Korea, and the actor will play as an astronaut who is far
away from the earth. For that reason, there will be different movement representing a different gravity.

#1 Ground control
• pre-recorded video clip
• A short film shows the ground control, the scene of launching space ship.
Scene Description

#2 major Tom to ground control
• real-time performing scene with chroma key effect
• He arrives at the moon and tries to connect to his beloved in earth. Their
communication is much difficult because of the faint and delayed signal.
Scene Description

Scene Description
#3 Connection with ground control
• real-time performing scene with chroma key effect
• He and she meet each other in virtual world. She appears on the moon and

Scene Description
#4 There’s something wrong
• Real-time performance with Kinect image processing
• A sudden crisis causes damages to the ship, which makes its transmission
impossible. The urgent situation is described by showing two characters’
anxiety and fearsome with noisy sound, distorted image.
• Finally he disappears into the abyss of space.
