Case Statement Introduction

The thyroid gland is an organ at the base of the throat that makes hormones that help control heart
rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight among other important biological functions
we take for granted. Thyroid cancer is the abnormal growth and reproduction of malignant cells in
the thyroid gland.

There are several types of thyroid cancer:

 Anaplastic Carcinoma (also called giant and spindle cell cancer) is the most dangerous
form of thyroid cancer. It is rare, and does not respond to radioiodine therapy. Anaplastic
carcinoma spreads quickly and invades nearby structures such as the windpipe (trachea),
       causing breathing difficulties.

 Follicular Carcinoma accounts for about 30% of all cases and is more likely to come back
       and spread.

 Medullary Carcinoma is a cancer of nonthyroid cells that are normally present in the thyroid
gland. This form of the thyroid cancer tends to occur in families. It requires different
treatment than other types of thyroid cancer.

 Papillary Carcinoma is the most common type, and usually affects women of childbearing
age. It spreads slowly and is the least dangerous type of thyroid cancer.

Thyroid cancer is different from many other adult cancers in that it is increasingly and commonly
diagnosed in younger people. In the year 2010 an estimated 44,670 adults (10,740 men and 33,930
women) were newly diagnosed with thyroid cancer in the United States. It is estimated that 1,690
deaths (730 men and 960 women) from this disease will occur this year. It is important to note that
up until recent years Pediatric thyroid cancer was extremely rare, but today it affects about 20
children in a million under age 10 and rising to about 25 children per million in teens ages 15 to
19 compared to 1 child in a million 10 years ago making thyroid cancer the fastest increasing
newly diagnosed cancer in America today among people of all ages, sex, race of ethnic
background.

Thyroid cancer is the fifth most common cancer in women; affect women 3 times more than men.
Recent studies and research also indicate that childhood cancer survivors are also at an increased
risk of developing thyroid cancer as adolescents or young adults. However, the incidence rates of
thyroid cancer in both women and men without a genetic or environmental risk factor have been
increasing in recent years, and researchers are not sure why. At current rates, one out of 111
Americans will get thyroid cancer at some point during his or her lifetime and the incidence is
projected to increase both in the United States and worldwide.

About Stevie JoEllie’s Cancer Care Fund
Mission

 To Promote Thyroid Cancer Awareness, Community Health Education, Access to Care and
Free Supportive Services for Thyroid Cancer Patients and Survivors Nationwide.

Overview

Founded in 2008, Stevie JoEllie’s Cancer Care Fund differs greatly from other cancer nonprofits
and volunteer groups in that it’s number one priority and fundraising focus is patient and survivor
aid rather than clinical research. Our goal is to help relieve the financial burden placed upon the
individual and family “living” with thyroid cancer.

We are a volunteer organization dedicated thyroid cancer survivors, patients, family members,
friends, healthcare providers and thyroid health advocates working together to develop an access
to care grant program for thyroid cancer patients and survivors nationwide.

SJCCF offers free support, advocacy and referral services designed to support thyroid cancer
patients and survivors long term health care needs, treatment and communications with the
healthcare team. In Orlando Florida our support groups meet the First Thursday of the Month at
MD Anderson Cancer Treatment Center (for more information email founder@sjccf.org)

Sponsorship

As a 501( C ) 3 not-for-profit health and human services project of United Charitable Programs
Inc., Stevie JoEllie’s Cancer Care Fund is authorized to accept tax deductible charitable
contributions and sponsorship of it’s development and community activities and programs.

SJCCF has very strict guidelines governing corporate sponsor relationships. Stevie JoEllie’s
Cancer Care Fund does NOT endorse corporate entities; rather corporate sponsors choose to
support SJCCF and it’s thyroid cancer awareness, community health education, access to care and
free supportive services for thyroid cancer patients and survivor initiatives. Because we are a
VOLUNTEER run organization 100% of your contribution supports our core mission and programs.

                OUR CORE MISSION IS H.O.P.E.

A Word From Our Founder
Dear Friend:

The Programs and resources provided by Stevie JoEllie’s Cancer Care Fund fill a void left behind by
budget cuts in public aid and assistance to the uninsured and underinsured thyroid cancer patients and
survivor community in Central Florida and beyond. They also help save lives by promoting thyroid cancer
awareness in our community at large, supporting early detection initiatives and better communication
between patients, survivors and their healthcare team. SJCCF’s existing programs include:

Free Support Groups: The Monthly support groups bring together newly diagnosed patients, survivors,
family members and friends. We share our experiences, offering mutual support and encouragement. We
give and receive practical tips for coping and psychosocial comfort.

Free Publications: We publish numerous free publications; brochures, patient wallet cards, fact sheets,
newsletters, downloadable low iodine cookbooks and other thyroid cancer awareness and education
materials for groups and community organizations.

Advocacy and Referral Services: Often times cancer patients are overwhelmed with insurance claim forms
and denials for service, job loss, insurance loss, disability claim delays, and other practical daily living
needs as their financial resources are drained by the healthcare costs of their cancer treatment. SJCCF
provides referral services to other supporting organizations that can help with those needs.

Access to Care Grant Program: This program is in development in Central Florida. We are actively
fundraising for this initiative and need to raise a minimum of $100,000. UDS to launch in September 2011
during the National Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month.

Ask yourself do we run the risk of losing these essential patient care services for thyroid cancer patients
and survivors in Central Florida because we fail to act or get behind our local organization providing these
services to our communities during this difficult economic time for everyone?

Without your support and strategic partnerships with the business community in Central Florida we will
not be able to deliver on our promise of assistance, community health education and hope for our growing
community of thyroid cancer patients and survivors in Central Florida. Together we can make a difference
and I look forward to working with you in this important project during 2011 and beyond. If you have any
questions please do not hesitate to contact me personally at 407-234-1744.

Thank You!

  • 3. Case Statement Introduction The thyroid gland is an organ at the base of the throat that makes hormones that help control heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight among other important biological functions we take for granted. Thyroid cancer is the abnormal growth and reproduction of malignant cells in the thyroid gland. There are several types of thyroid cancer:  Anaplastic Carcinoma (also called giant and spindle cell cancer) is the most dangerous form of thyroid cancer. It is rare, and does not respond to radioiodine therapy. Anaplastic carcinoma spreads quickly and invades nearby structures such as the windpipe (trachea), causing breathing difficulties.  Follicular Carcinoma accounts for about 30% of all cases and is more likely to come back and spread.  Medullary Carcinoma is a cancer of nonthyroid cells that are normally present in the thyroid gland. This form of the thyroid cancer tends to occur in families. It requires different treatment than other types of thyroid cancer.  Papillary Carcinoma is the most common type, and usually affects women of childbearing age. It spreads slowly and is the least dangerous type of thyroid cancer. Thyroid cancer is different from many other adult cancers in that it is increasingly and commonly diagnosed in younger people. In the year 2010 an estimated 44,670 adults (10,740 men and 33,930 women) were newly diagnosed with thyroid cancer in the United States. It is estimated that 1,690 deaths (730 men and 960 women) from this disease will occur this year. It is important to note that up until recent years Pediatric thyroid cancer was extremely rare, but today it affects about 20 children in a million under age 10 and rising to about 25 children per million in teens ages 15 to 19 compared to 1 child in a million 10 years ago making thyroid cancer the fastest increasing newly diagnosed cancer in America today among people of all ages, sex, race of ethnic background. Thyroid cancer is the fifth most common cancer in women; affect women 3 times more than men. Recent studies and research also indicate that childhood cancer survivors are also at an increased risk of developing thyroid cancer as adolescents or young adults. However, the incidence rates of thyroid cancer in both women and men without a genetic or environmental risk factor have been increasing in recent years, and researchers are not sure why. At current rates, one out of 111 Americans will get thyroid cancer at some point during his or her lifetime and the incidence is projected to increase both in the United States and worldwide. • 4. About Stevie JoEllie’s Cancer Care Fund Mission  To Promote Thyroid Cancer Awareness, Community Health Education, Access to Care and Free Supportive Services for Thyroid Cancer Patients and Survivors Nationwide. Overview Founded in 2008, Stevie JoEllie’s Cancer Care Fund differs greatly from other cancer nonprofits and volunteer groups in that it’s number one priority and fundraising focus is patient and survivor aid rather than clinical research. Our goal is to help relieve the financial burden placed upon the individual and family “living” with thyroid cancer. We are a volunteer organization dedicated thyroid cancer survivors, patients, family members, friends, healthcare providers and thyroid health advocates working together to develop an access to care grant program for thyroid cancer patients and survivors nationwide. SJCCF offers free support, advocacy and referral services designed to support thyroid cancer patients and survivors long term health care needs, treatment and communications with the healthcare team. In Orlando Florida our support groups meet the First Thursday of the Month at MD Anderson Cancer Treatment Center (for more information email founder@sjccf.org) Sponsorship As a 501( C ) 3 not-for-profit health and human services project of United Charitable Programs Inc., Stevie JoEllie’s Cancer Care Fund is authorized to accept tax deductible charitable contributions and sponsorship of it’s development and community activities and programs. SJCCF has very strict guidelines governing corporate sponsor relationships. Stevie JoEllie’s Cancer Care Fund does NOT endorse corporate entities; rather corporate sponsors choose to support SJCCF and it’s thyroid cancer awareness, community health education, access to care and free supportive services for thyroid cancer patients and survivor initiatives. Because we are a VOLUNTEER run organization 100% of your contribution supports our core mission and programs. OUR CORE MISSION IS H.O.P.E. • 5. A Word From Our Founder Dear Friend: The Programs and resources provided by Stevie JoEllie’s Cancer Care Fund fill a void left behind by budget cuts in public aid and assistance to the uninsured and underinsured thyroid cancer patients and survivor community in Central Florida and beyond. They also help save lives by promoting thyroid cancer awareness in our community at large, supporting early detection initiatives and better communication between patients, survivors and their healthcare team. SJCCF’s existing programs include: Free Support Groups: The Monthly support groups bring together newly diagnosed patients, survivors, family members and friends. We share our experiences, offering mutual support and encouragement. We give and receive practical tips for coping and psychosocial comfort. Free Publications: We publish numerous free publications; brochures, patient wallet cards, fact sheets, newsletters, downloadable low iodine cookbooks and other thyroid cancer awareness and education materials for groups and community organizations. Advocacy and Referral Services: Often times cancer patients are overwhelmed with insurance claim forms and denials for service, job loss, insurance loss, disability claim delays, and other practical daily living needs as their financial resources are drained by the healthcare costs of their cancer treatment. SJCCF provides referral services to other supporting organizations that can help with those needs. Access to Care Grant Program: This program is in development in Central Florida. We are actively fundraising for this initiative and need to raise a minimum of $100,000. UDS to launch in September 2011 during the National Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month. Ask yourself do we run the risk of losing these essential patient care services for thyroid cancer patients and survivors in Central Florida because we fail to act or get behind our local organization providing these services to our communities during this difficult economic time for everyone? Without your support and strategic partnerships with the business community in Central Florida we will not be able to deliver on our promise of assistance, community health education and hope for our growing community of thyroid cancer patients and survivors in Central Florida. Together we can make a difference and I look forward to working with you in this important project during 2011 and beyond. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me personally at 407-234-1744. Thank You!
