1. OVERVIEW:
1.1. In 1991, the government of NWFP created Sarhad Tourism
Corporation (STC) as a public limited company to promote tourism
in the province. This was done in recognition of the enormous
potential for economic development through environmental tourism
based on the diverse landscape, rich culture and pristine
ecological resources of the province. The Sarhad Tourism
Corporation has the role to develop/ promote and expose
Pakistan's tourism potential to the outside world .
1.2. Learning from the experiences of the other Tourism Corporations
in Pakistan and the other sister organizations of Siri Lanka and
Maldives etc. the Sarhad Tourism Corporation (STC) was
established by the government of N.W.F.P with a clear mandate to
play its role as a catalyst and help develop and promote the
tourism industry through the private sector through public
sector incentives. It is the government of NWFP's strategy to
help the STC to stand on its own feet and become a self
sustaining organization.
Sustainable Development is that which meets the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs. Wherever possible, development should
leave an enlarged range of opportunities for the future. In
seeking to develop a viable tourism industry, only if the
"greenness" and cultural heritage of NWFP are maintained will
domestic and foreign tourists be attracted in sufficient numbers
to justify the infrastructure investment required.
1.3 As part of the schemes that can not be funded from ADP and be
offered to the donors and the private sector the Sarhad Tourism
Corporation submits the same proposal that was discussed on 10-
08-1999 by a high level meeting of the PE&D department and
subsequently submitted to the Ministry of Tourism by the PE&D
department. The Sarhad Tourism corporation has formulated this
concept paper from a number of Feasibilty studies undertaken
through the ADP .
1.4. The North West Frontier Province (NWFP) runs for over 1.100 kms
(680 miles) along the border with Afghanistan. The Capital of
NWFP remained the hurt of the ancient kingdom of Gandhara and is
rich in archaeological remains. The northern half of the
province consists of five river valleys running roughly parallel
north to south: the Chitral, Dir, Swat, Indus and Kaghan. These
valleys are on the northern edge of the monsoon belt, so are
fairly green and partly wooded in their southern section.
Northern Chitral and the upper region of the Indus Valley are

mountainous deserts, where cultivation depends entirely on
irrigation. The NWFP south of Peshawar is below the monsoon
belt and consist of low, rocky mountains and wide, gravelly
plains.
DESCRIPTION OF THE TOURISTIC POTENTIAL
2. PESHAWAR DISTRICT:
2.1. Peshawar:
It is the capital of the NWFP is a frontier town and quite
different from any other city in Pakistan. It has a modern
university, first-class hotels, international banks and one of
the best Museums in Pakistan. The Bala Hisar Fort overlooks the
mass of narrow streets in the old town and the elegant Mughal
Mosque. One the other side of the railway is the cantonment, its
wide treelined streets bordered by gracious administrative
buildings and spacious bungalows in large gardens.
2.2. Shah-ji-ki-Dheri:
Kanishka built the empire's most magnificent Buddhist stupa at
Shah-ji-ki-Dheri in Peshawar, and the city became one of the
most important Buddhist centers of pilgrimage. We can attract
tourist form Japan, Nepal China and many other countries to
Peshawar due to its historical background.
2.3. Mahabat Khan Mosque:
The beautifully proportioned Mahabat Khan Mosque is at the top
of the hill on the fight; a narrow gateway between the jewellary
shops leads onto its large courtyard. Built in the 1670s, the
Mughal mosque is orthodox in design, with an ablution pond in
the middle of the open courtyard.
2.4. Gor Khatri:
The Gor Kharti is a large Mughal caravanserai at the top end of
Sethi Street. The caravan serai was built on a spot that has
been a holy place for nearly 2,000 years. In the 2nd century AD
it was a Buddhism declined it became a Hindu shrine.
2.5. Peshawar Museum:
The Peshawar Museum has one of the best collections of Gandhara
Art in Pakistan, all well arranged and labelled. Sculptures
illustrating the life of Buddha are laid out in chronological
order. The fasting Buddha here is even more haunting than the
one in Lahore Museum. There is also an ethnological section, the
Hall of Tribes, With wooden carvings form the Kalash people in
Chitral and a Muslim Gallery.
2.6. Jamrud Fort:
Jamrud Fort, made of rough stonework and faced with mud plaster,
was built by the Sikhs in 1823 on the site of an older fort.

2.7. Sphola Stupa:
Sphola stupa, of the second to fifth centuries, stands on the
right of the road above the railway at the village of Zarai, 25
km from Jamrud. The stupa has a high hemispherical dome resting
on a three-tiered square base. Beautiful Gandharan sculptures
were found here when the site was excavated at the beginning of
this century some of which are now in the Peshawar Museum.
2.8. Khyber Pass:
The Khyber Railway from Peshawar to Landi Kotal is, for rail
enthusiasts, a three-star attraction. It has 34 tunnels, which
add up to five km of darkness, as there are no lights on the
train, and crosses 92 bridges and culverts.
2.9. Warsak Dam:
Warsak Dam is a favourite picnic spot, 25 km north-west of
Peshawar on the Michni Road. The dam was built on the Kabul
River and has created a 42 Km long lake behind it. One can also
reach the dam from the Khyber Pass a road at Jamrud.
2.10. Bala Hisar Fort:
Located on the entrance of Peshawar on left side of G.T. Road,
Bala Hisar is an old fort constructed by the British Government.
Since partition it is occupied by the army.
2.11. Hayatabad Parks:
Tatara park, Khyber park, Bagh-i-Naran and recently established
Shalman park. Besides there is a complete sports complex
including a restaurant and swimming pool already under
operationalised.
2.12. Qayum Sports Complex:
It consists of a swimming pool, a ground for different games
including separate section for indoor games.
2.13. Mosque Qasim Khan:
It is located in Qissa Khani Bazar and is an ancient monument
under the Auqaf department.
2.14. Army Stadium:
It has play grounds, children amusement park and restaurants as
well as shopping centers.
2.15. Ghanta Gar:
it is also an ancient monument and a reminder of British
colonial rule.
2.16. Chowkyadgar:
It was earlier a Monument designed by the local authorities .
However very recently it has been redesigned and reconstructed
by PDA.

2.17. Peshawar University:
It hosts the famous Islamia College besides including the Khyber
Medical college, Engineering University, Agriculture University
and the Peshawar University itself.
2.18. University Museum:
The department of Archeology University of Peshawar has
commissioned in collaboration
with Japanese government a
very latest and international
standard Museum.
2.19. Qissa Khwani Bazar:
This place is famous for its specialized bazaars as well as its
name is said to have come from the old caravans passing by this
place and narrating their journeys to those present and other
caravans.
2.20.Yadgar Shahidan:
it is an old monument built in recognition for those who
were martyred by the British colonial rulers.
2.21. Railway Station Cantonment:
Cantonment is the main area where the Britishers have
established their military establishments . The railways was
only way to carry heavy goods and passengers as well during the
colonial rule. The famous Edwardes College is just opposite to
this place which is also itself an architectural monument.
2.22. Sardaryab:
Fish hunting and selling both cooked and uncooked can be enjoyed
here. There are small boats taking the people on excursions in
the river Sardaryab.
3. MARDAN DISTRICT:
3.1. Mardan:
Mardan, 60 km north-east of Peshawar is famous as the birth
place of the Guides the Queen's Own Guide Corpos, an elite
British regiment of North-West Frontier soldier-spies founded in
the 1840s. The town itself has little to offer but it acts as a
base point for seeing a concentration of Buddhist and other
ancient sites of Gandhara civilization.
3.2. Takht-i-Bhai:
By far the best and most complete of all Gandhara ruins are
those of the 7th century AD. Bushiest monastery, spectacularly
placed on a rocky hill 15 km north-west of Mardan. It was

excavated (and stripped of statuary and friezes) from 1907 to
1913, and later reconstructed. From the top of the hill behind
the monastery on e can see down across the plains as far as
Peshawar on one side, and up to the Malakand Pass and the hills
of the Swat on the other Surrounding the monastery on the ridge
above it to the south, and on the spurs to the east and west,
are the ruins of private houses, some of which are three storey
high. Federal Archeology department is the administrative
authority for the operation & maintenance of the old relics. It
is also on UNESCO list and is a National Heritage.
3.3. Shahbaz Garhi and the Ashokan Inscriptions:
Shahbaz Garhi is located 13 km east of Mardan on the road to
Swabi. Sown a dirt track to the right, a few meters, are the
famous Ashokan inscriptions, carved in two rocks on a hill about
300 meters to the left. The Ashokan inscriptions date from the
3rd century BC and are the oldest surviving writings of any
historical significance in the Subcontinent.
At Shahbaz Garhi 12 edicts are carved on the rock, two on
another, Shahbaz Garhi is important to Buddhists because f its
association with prince Sudana, or Buddha in one of his previous
incarnations, Sudana means of noble charity; the area is still
popularly know as the Sudana Plan.
3.4. Mekha-Sanda stupa and Monastery:
Mekha-Sanda Stupa and monastery are on top of the hill. Two big
rocks resembling water buffaloes lie side by side on the hill
top; "mekha" means female water buffalo, 'sanda' male- hence the
monastery's name. Two natural caves at the foot of the Mekaha-
Sanda hill are supposed to the separate abodes of Visvantara and
his wife, who as ascetics could not cohabit.
3.5. Stupa of Chanak-Dheri:
The stupa of Chanak-Dheri, or white elephant, is on the left of
the road to Rustam about 2 km from turning from the Swabi road
and about 500 meters left across the fields. This was also
excavated by the Japanese.
3.6. Sahri Stupa:
Sahri stupa commemorates Prince Visvantara giving up his two
children, is beside the road on the right. It has Muslim graves
on the top and is not excavated.
3.7. Jamal Garhi:
The ruins of a monastery and a beautiful courtyard of stupas are
on a hill-top overlooking the village 15 km north of Mardan. The
view including Takht-i-Bhai and Shahbaz Garhi, is especially
grand at sunrises sunset.
3.8. Kashmir Smasts:

The Kashmir Smasts means Kashmir Cave, a holy site to Hindus and
Buddhists, through its monastery, ritual bath and stupas have
been decimated by treasure hunters and ghosts.
3.9. Museum:
Museum exists at mardan and it contains relics of old
civilization of Buddha and Ghandhara.
3.10. Sheikh Maltoon Township Park:
This is a new town with most of the facilities like children
playlands, parks, playing grounds.
4. SWAT:
4.1. Udegram Ruins:
Udegram was an extremely large town where we can see the ruined
central massive buildings dating back to the Kushan period. Here
an imposing staircase has been uncovered consisting of a series
of steps about 25 feet long which belong to the Sassanian
period. Arrows found in great quantity testify to the fierce
battles which in various periods were fought for its capture.
Coins, pottery, beads and a few ornaments are precious items of
reference in the chronological order with reference to the
various layers.
4.2. Shankar Dara:
There is a stupa most probably of the days of Ashoka and
building remains/ruins on a small hill, which also date back to
the Buddhist days which was the prime period of this religion
for its followers in this part of the country. A unique feature
of the buildings constructed during the Buddhist civilization is
that these buildings used to be located on the adjacent hills
adjoining the cultivable lands or in some cases adjoining
flowing water. This indicates that they would try to be placed
on safe commanding sites away from the vagary of floods and/or
possible invaders.
4.3. Ghalegai Cave:
This is a prehistoric cave near a stupa nearby Ghalegai Details
of this cave are shrouded and have to be explored. This is an
outstanding challenge for the present day archaeologists.
4.4. Buddha On Rock:
Near village Ghalegai on road from Chakdara to Saidu Sharif is a
large statue of Mahatma Budha carved on a big rock and is an
item of attraction for the visitors. There is no sign post and
most of the tourists cross over the bend of the road unaware of
the location.
A few steps were constructed during the past for observing the
statue closely. With manhandling during the past, the statue has
been disfigured. Even now it is not too late to mend. A railing

with a small gate and a sign post is needed. The sign post or
board will give indication for the location while the railing
and the gate will give an impression that the statue is meant to
be preserved.
4.5. Gogdara:
Beyond Ghalegai , this is the most attractive site just off the
main road. Carving on rock here are of main interest.
4.6. Landaki Fishing Point:
This is a beautiful spot as the Swat River hugs the road here in
a lend. Reclaimed river bed with grassy cover and few shady
trees has made this site attractive. Small improvised
refreshment stalls have been created for temporary spot over of
passengers and tourists. Some amateur anglers try their luck for
fishing here, others enjoy the roasted fish with a cup of tea or
a cold drink. It will not be out of place if a public sector
small restaurant with requisite facilities is constructed and
leased out to a private party.
4.7. Mingora:
Mingora is the district headquarters and main bazaar area. Its
shopkeepers are always prepared to engage in serious bargaining
and they offer wide range of items such as jewellary, gems,
embroidery, local handicrafts and Swati shawls. Foreign made
items are abundantly available as a number of people of Swat are
employed overseas and in merchant navy who bring these items
with them and dispose them off in the local market.
4.8. Kabal golf Course:
Kabal is an attractive site located on the North of Mingora town
across river Swat in relatively plain land at the foot of hill
range. Nearby is the airport connecting Swat with the rest of
the country Kabal is a Golfers Paradise. An eighteen-holes golf
course is open all the year round and a tourist can play by
paying the government fee. A Govt. Rest House and a large fruit
orchard also located here. A modern hotel is planned to be
constructed here in the coming years which will provide
facilities of stay for tourists which is presently lacking as
the Govt Rest House is not available to visitors.
4.9. Saidu Sharif:
Saidu Sharif is the administrative capital of
NWFP/Swat/Abbottabad District. Here is located the Swat Museum,
the remains of Butkada stupa, the Wali of Swat palace, the tomb
of Akhund of Swat called Saidu Baba and of course, the Swat
Serena Hotel.
4.10. Gulkada:
At Gulkada, 2 miles north of Saidu Sharif, probably the most
important monastery of the country has been located. It
surrounds a big Stupa from where clandestine diggers have in the

past many years brought to light some of the most beautiful
fragments of Gandhara art. This is now within the precincts of
Mingora extension of the town where office complex of the
district administration is situated. This name of Gulkada is not
more than two decades old. Its older name was Butkadah meaning a
place where statues are located.
The site is an old place of a village/ town of the Buddhist
period and excavations done here during the past by the
archaeology department exposed the ruins which are now visible
to the visitor.
4.11. Swat Museum:
Nearby is located a Museum called Swat Museum which houses many
valuable collections of the excavations in and around Mingora
and the adjoining archaeological sites. These collections are
indications of the life style of the people and their beliefs.
4.12. Marghozar(White Palace):
This beautiful spot is situated about 12 km towards South-West
of Mingora. There is a building made of white marble and used to
be occupied by the Wali's father, namely Abdul Wadood , alias
Bacha Sahib. There is an open mosque a spring of very cold water
at a lower level than the palace. A parking platform is also
available between the mosque and the palace. For several decades
the building remained vacant just to remind the rule of the ex-
autocrat. Now this has been leased out to become a restaurant-
cum-hotel. It has also got the facility of joy rides for the
children. Since this is situated at a height of about 4000 ft
and has got shaded trees around and also along the approach
road, it has wholesome cooling effect on the visitors.
4.13. Fizagat:
The scenic river bank is a tourist attraction spot throughout
the year but more so during the summer months as the cold snow
melt water of Swat river affords welcome relief to the visitors
who sometimes enjoy a dip in the river. The site has attraction
as a picnic spot in all reasons of the year.
The history of this attractive name is however very gruesome.
This site used to be called Qazaghat previously as condemned
prisoners of the then Swat State were executed here by firing
squads of the ex-ruler Bacha Sahib, Abdul Wadood by name and
father of the ex- Wali. Shariat Laws were practiced under the
patronage of Bacha Sahib Abdul Wadood by his appointed Qazis.
The implementation of the Islamic Jurisprudence by the then
Qazis was according to their own knowledge of Islam and there
was no scope of appeal against the verdict. This is now an old
story and common tourists will not be interested in the old
practices of the area, the site is presently a healthy road side
spot frequented by local and other tourists. THey enjoy snacks

or else spend busy time in picnic.
4.14. Miandam:
This is situated midway between Mingora and khwazakhela. It has
got an attractive commanding view over the narrow valley at the
end of which it is situated. A PTDC hotel has sometime back been
established which affords facilities to the tourists for stay.
There is yet another Rest House nearby. The connecting road
between the two has been proposed to be black topped at a cost
of R: 2.0 million. A provision of 0.5 million is made for 1995-
96 while R: 1.5 million are proposed to be spent in 1996-97.
4.15. Malam Jabba:
Malam Jabba is a Ski-cum-summer Tourist Resort, 35 kilometers
from Saidu Sharif (an hour long drive) where a beautiful white
palatial building welcomes the tourists.
There are two kinds of lift chairs. One for reaching the hill
peak and the other which takes us to the skiing area during the
winters. The resort is still not fully developed.
This site is situated between Mingora and Khwazakhela on a bye-
pass road in the hill 35 Km from Saidu Sharif. The site is meant
for skying during Winter and tourist resort in Summer. A
luxurious hotel accommodation has been constructed with the
cooperation of Austrian Govt. Situated at a height about 6,500
ft it has an attraction for the tourists to welcome them.
The tourists are however visiting the site infrequently . There
could be a few reasons for the same. Lack of publicity, uneasy
and uncomfortable access road, higher hotel charges could be
the possible reasons.
4.16. Manglor:
This is a populous village situated on the left bank of Swat
River between Mingora and Khwazakhela. It is an important
village historically as it has remained the seat of rule during
the Mughals and even before that.
4.17. Bahrain:
It too is situated on the main Mingora-Kalam Road, just short of
Kalam. Here the gushing and splashing crystal clear cold water
of two tributaries meet which presents an absorbing moment to
the mind and the eyes. The swift movement of beautiful trout
fish to and for is an added attraction.
Other worldly engagements aside one would like to stay on here
for days together to beat the heat of the southern hot sultry
summer.

4.18. Kalam:
Kalam (6,800 feet above sea level) is about 110 kilometers (65
miles) north of Mingora and is the highest city in the Swat
valley. A wooden bridges links the city parts across the river.
On all sides are snow-covered peaks of the Hindu Kush range,
dense forests of fir, pine, deodar and wild flowers. This is the
terminus of the main glen starting somewhere from Khwaza khela,
as the valley here splits into two, Ushoo and Athrore. The river
bed here slightly wider, forms into two small islands which
further adds to the beauty of the place as tourists reach the
island with picnic arrangements, photography and angling. It is
to remind the reader that trout fish here is one of the greatest
attraction, which is available under licensed reel and rod.
4.19. Mahudand Lake:
From Kalam, Mahodand Lake is 30 kilometers and to visit the lake
one has to hire a jeep. About 10 kilometers before the lake,
there is a fascinating waterfall. It is the most beautiful and
biggest fall in this area. In route to NWFP/Swat/Abbottabad one
comes across two or at best one glaciers, which may pose an
obstacle for onward journey. Commissioner Malakand has informed
that Islamic Investment Bank is establishing a Tentage
Village / Camping site at Mahodand Swat. the district
Administration will provide safety & road maintenance/
accessibility to the site in all weathers.
5. ABBOTTABAD DISTRICT
5.1. Abbottabad City
This is the Headquarter of the district and situated in 34
09' N
and 73
-13' E. The headquarter of the district was fist placed
here in 1853 and the new cantonment was named after Major James
Abbott, first Deputy Commissioner of NWFP/Swat/Abbottabad (1847
- 1853). The town is picturesquely situated at the southern
corner of the plain, 4120 ft above sea level. This beautiful
scenic place is bounded by hills on all the four sides except
its approach form the southern inlet and the northern exit
towards Mansehra. The city has by now developed into a
attractive tourist spot with all possible amenities. These
amenities broadly are, good roads leading to Nathia Gali-Murree,
Mansehra-Kaghan, Naran, good quality hotels and restaurants with
gas connections, tourist information center, post and telegraph,
NWD telephones and a medical complex and shopping facility for
quality products . One township called Jinnahabad township has
already been constructed while a second one is in process by
the Physical Planning and Housing Department of Government of
N.W.F.P.
Abbottabad is basically a cantonment city which is a base of
some well known Army Units. Pakistan Military Academy is located

at Kakul which falls within the urban limits of Abbottabad. This
academy has a strong and visible impact on the urban life of
Abbottabad. The second most significant activity is the presence
of a number of high standard English Medium educational
institutions both in private and public sectors.
5.2. Jinnah Bagh:
It has a potential to be developed into a public park with
additional facilities such as fountains, artificial rock
mountains , children amusement play ground in addition to
children's small train service for kids would be an addendum to
its existing beauty.
5.3. Army Stadium:
It is proposed that the Army establishment would be taken into
confidence in order to make it upgraded to the level of Army
stadium Peshawar.
5.4. Shimla Hill :
A cable car facility is proposed for the site as it ideally is
located for installation of the proposed facility.
5.5. Frontier House:
Commissioning of this colonial building as tourist resort is
proposed.
5.6. Sports -City Abbottabad:
The director sports is to be engaged as this issue has already
been discussed and proposed to the relevant quarters concerned
in respect of promoting sports tourism.
5.7. Ayub Medical Complex/ Parks Landscaping:
The area situated in the suburb of abbottabad city and required
face lifting by adopting various measures like landscaping etc.
in order to make it beautiful.
5.7.1 Abbot Abad Public Park near Abbottabad Public School:
The possibility of commissioning of a public park in the
vicinity of the School.
5.8. Nawan Shehr:
Closely situated to Abbottabad, this town older than Abbottabad
itself, is known for its springs. The gushing spring water is
cold in summer, and warm in winter. Tourists enjoy the profusely
flowing water which does not diminish in any season of the year.
While visiting/staying at Abbottabad or on way to Kaghan valley
the Nawan Sher town is a place of interest for the tourists
which is located at a distance of only 5 kilometers from the
down town Abbottabad and falls within its urban limits. Being

located in close proximity, it depends on Abbottabad for most of
the urban facilities and services.
5.9. Ilyasi Mosque:
Ilyasi Mosque located at Nawan Shehr is another historic land
mark of the area. It is a beautiful mosque with interesting
architectural structure.
GULIYAT
5.10. Kalabagh:
It is a small cantonment, situated 34
-06' N and 73
-25' E on the
road between Abbottabad and Nathia Gali at a distance of 2
kilometers short of Nathia Gali. Except for its scenic beauty
and overlooking view of the lower green hills from the road,
there is no stop over arrangement of any sort. A helipad
belonging to the Pakistan Air Force is located here. Most of the
Rest Houses located here belong to Pakistan Army. The view of
Nathia Gali from here is beautiful.
5.11. Khaira Gali:
It is also a small settlement situated at 33
-55'N and 73
-20' E.
This is the last settlement before the road from Nathia Gali
enters into Punjab while going to Murree. Murree is about 12
kilometers from here. Beautiful scenery can be enjoyed in all
directions from here. No important tourist facilities is
available here except refreshments and snacks.
5.12. Khanspur/Ayubia:
These two are closely situated (34o-02'N and 73o-30'E). Khanspur
is linked with the main Murree-Abbottabad Road with a small link
road. Khanspur being cantonment is prohibited for the visitors
while Ayubia is actually meant for tourists. Ayubia has been
developed into a tourist spot as chair lifts have been installed
and a large number of visitors enjoy this facility every year
during the summer. With all this National park of wild life
,fanfare and joy sides, there is no road side facility for the
tourists for over night stay. Quite a few tourist huts at normal
rates are required to be constructed to make the site more
attractive.
5.13. Nathia Gali:
It has been the summer headquarter of the Frontier Govt., and is
a hill resort with beautiful buildings and hotels. It is
situated at 34
-05' N and 73
-58'E midway on the road from
Abbottabad to Murree. Hotels developed here in the recent past
are expensive for the average tourist. Road side facility
adequately for the tourists is a must to have attraction for
them. In fact the influx of tourists during summer months
warrants that, because a normal tourist cannot afford the high
charges of the good quality hotels.

5.14. Thandiani:
Though closely situated to Abbottabad, this hill side resort at
a height of 8,845 feet has not received due attention from the
tourism point of view. A couple of rest houses exist here but
are owned by provincial departments which can not ordinarily be
used by the tourists. As and when the tourist influx develops,
of course through proper publicity, additional facilities can be
added later on. It is worth mentioning here that a small
shopping center used to exist during the early British days. A
T.V. booster has been installed here to extend transmission
facilities to far flung villages.
5.15. Changla Gali and Bara Gali:
These beautiful small hilly villages are a source of attraction
while on way to Murree from Abbottabad. Because of thickly
covered mountains with Pine, Oaks and Jenifer trees, these
places present an enchanting picture to the eyes. The wild life
peeping from behind the tree trunks is yet another attraction
for the tourist.
5.16. Dunga Gali:
A PC-one and feasibility report is ready to be implemented in

6. KOHAT:
6.1. Kohat:
Kohat is basically a cantonment with in it is the Garrison Town.
The main road by passes it, but it is worth going through the
centre to see the old British establishments.
6.2. Tanda Dam:
This site has been selected for a restaurant presently under
construction by the corporation within the protected area of the
Wild Life Park there.
6.3. Khushal Garh:
This rest house located on main Pindi Kohat road has been
transferred to the Corporation and has been offered for lease to
the private sector through print media.
6.4. Banda Daud Shah:
This rest house is located 7 kms off the main Indus high way
towards D.I.Khan at a point called Lachi where a road turns
towards Banda Daud Shah rest house. It has has been transferred
to the Corporation and has been offered for lease to the private
sector through print media.
7. D. I. Khan:

7.1. D.I.Khan:
D. I. Khan is the getaway to NWFP for the tourists entering
Pakistan from Balochistan and Punjab. Majority of the tourists
entering from the western border on motorbike follow this route
to NWFP. Most of them however just pass through D.I. Khan. There
are two ancient sites, one is on Chashma Road know as "Kafir
Kot" just 1 km towards left near Bilot Head Works, and the other
is Rehman Dheri, which is about 25 km on the Bannu Road, very
few people know about it.
7.2. Bilot Head Works:
A picnic spot, located on the metalled road at a distance of
75KM from D.I. Khan is an ideal place for a recreational park or
the restaurant. Local residents of D. I. Khan visit this site
for picnic. The ancient site of Kafir Kot is hardly 5 km from
this point.
7.3. Amusement park:
On the west bank of river Indus near Hotel Midway an amusement
park may be developed for local residents. This is easily
approachable and in the evening local communities stroll on the
river side. The river side is very crowded on Fridays when
families come for a picnic.
7.4. Narrow Gauge Railway Safari:
Although it will be a long term project, yet narrow Gauge
railway can be reinstalled which will promote tourism industry
as well as serve as an additional means of transport, Locals
told that remains of the narrow Gauge railway line still exist
along the riverside as it used to pass through the place where
now Midway Hotel stands.
7.5 Rehman Dheri:
Indus civilization ruins are found at a distance of 20 km from
D. I. Khan at Rehman Dheri. Tourist interested in pre-historic
and Indus civilization visit this place.
7.6 Kafir Kot Forts:
On the way to Chashma Barrage (from D.I. Khan), The Southern
Kafir Kot Fort stands on low (Marwat) hills and is clearly
visible from the road. Kike the Northern Kafir Kot Fort, 38 km
further up the Indus, it was built at the time of the Hindu
Rajput Kingdom (8th to the 10th century) and was destroyed by
Mahmud of Ghaznavi in the 11th century. Neither fort was
rebuilt.
As the Southern Kafir Kot Fort there are three main temple and
shrines on the same plinth. THe carving deep chiselled and
reminiscent of Mayan sculpture, is fine and well preserved.
The Northern Kafir Kot Fort is about 6 km north of the western

end of Chashma Barrage. The fort commands a splendid defensive
position. It covers a rubble-strewn area of about 25 hectares
(62 acres). Inside there are four temples, two badly eroded, the
others intricately carved. The best preserved walls including a
fate, are on the north side of the fort; the walls are about 8
Meters (20 feet) high.

the provincial level from where the information and sub projects

have been proposed.
