ESUGThis document introduces Bots Inc., which teaches programming to kids aged 7 to 99 using a turtle robot metaphor. The goal is to make programming fun and understandable. If the first book sells well, the next book may cover object-oriented programming using a miner robot escaping a maze. In recent years, Evolutionary clustering is an evolving research area in data mining. The
evolution diagnosis of any homogeneous as well as heterogeneous network will provide an
overall view about the network. Applications of evolutionary clustering includes, analyzing, the
social networks, information networks, about their structure, properties and behaviors. In this
paper, the authors study the problem of influence of priors over multi-typed object in
evolutionary clustering. Priors are defined for each type of object in a heterogeneous
information network and experimental results were produced to show how consistency and
quality of cluster changes according to the priors.
Testing for Real
This document summarizes a talk given at the ESUG Conference in 2006 about refactoring test code out of real data. The problem discussed is that while test-driven development is useful, writing tests for complex domains with many configurations and lifecycles is challenging. The proposed solution is to refactor test scripts from the complex object models in the production data, partially evaluating test code against real event data to generate readable tests. This involves mapping events to test builder methods, evaluating conditions and arguments, and inlining the results into new test methods. Future work aims to fully evaluate parse trees and integrate with evaluation frameworks.

Bridging knowing and proving in mathematics
Slides in support of a talk at the conference "Explanation and Proof in Mathematics: Philosophical and Educational Perspective" held in Essen in November 2006.
Abstract:
The learning of mathematics starts early but remains far from any theoretical considerations: pupils' mathematical knowledge is first rooted in pragmatic evidence or conforms to procedures taught. However, learners develop a knowledge which they can apply in significant problem situations, and which is amenable to falsification and argumentation. They can validate what they claim to be true but using means generally not conforming to mathematical standards. Here, I analyze how this situation underlies the epistemological and didactical complexities of teaching mathematical proof. I show that the evolution of the learners' understanding of what counts as proof in mathematics implies an evolution of their knowing of mathematical concepts. The key didactical point is not to persuade learners to accept a new formalism but to have them understand how mathematical proof and statements are tightly related within a common framework; that is, a mathematical theory. I address this aim by modeling the learners' way of knowing in terms of a dynamic, homeostatic system. I discuss the roles of different semiotic systems, of the types of actions the learners perform and of the controls they implement in constructing or validating knowledge. Particularly with modern technological aids, this model provides a basis designing didactical situations to help learners bridge the gap between pragmatics and theory.

Threaded execution interprets code as a sequence of addresses like bytecode but is 2.3-4.7 times faster, while CPS passes continuations explicitly like in functional languages and is 3-5 times faster than bytecode. Both approaches allow fallback to debugging. The implementation shares context and stack between modes to easily switch with proper object structures.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
