A Term Paper about the phenomenon of artist-award schemes in Hong Kong art scene
* Feedback from Dr. Nick CHU Tai-sing after correcting my assignment:
A good reputation is not necessarily an original sin, right? One of the ways to launch successfully ones artistic career, as spelled out by Sarah Thornton, is to get an important award. All the policy related to art development in Hong Kong is elitist, in the sense that, like in sport development, there is no grass root planning. In Bourdieu's sense, there has been and is no desire to accumulate cultural capital for the society as a whole in Hong Kong. As such it will remain elitist, only a very few can make it big--in terms of reputation and money spinning. In general, reputation of an artist requires years to establish, as there are a lot of mechanism, institutional assessment, as well as trial by time. Yet the market in Hong Kong and China is such that this trial by time like long term investment is taken over by short term speculation and even money laundry.
What is special about the art of John Neville Cohen?jncohen
Special effect that is pure photography, without computers, John's art is to create fantasy within the camera. Most of these pictures were originally taken on Kodachrome transparency film.
You can go through my acrylic paintings and neo-Chinese-ink paintings from this proposal. Through a literary mean of description, you will understand how I search for an integration between Chinese and Western aesthetics, as well as my holistic exposure to different creative possibilities.
Photorealism began in the late 1960s as a reaction to abstract art movements. It aimed to reclaim the value of imagery in art by using photographs and mechanical means to precisely replicate scenes and objects in paintings. Key photorealists discussed include Richard Estes, Chuck Close, Ralph Goings, and Duane Hanson. Their works captured frozen moments in time through highly detailed renditions of cityscapes, portraits, and everyday objects. While influenced by pop art, photorealism sought to elevate photographic images through technical mastery rather than critique popular culture.
Prof. Ho Siu-kee asked me to primitively render the challenge of landscape drawing and landscape painting in my final assignment. But, when I did this series of "I SWIM" creations, I did not feel like doing sketching as similar Civic Painting Society Camp. Rather, I felt myself as repeating what Sum Ling from "Collar" has ever done in Ms. Choi Yan-chi's drawing class at BUVA in 2006.
This document provides details about fashion photographer Victor Skrebneski's 32-year collaboration with Estée Lauder, during which he crafted iconic advertising campaigns. Skrebneski shot black-and-white portraits of a small number of models over many years to represent Lauder's vision of an elegant, sophisticated woman. His atmospheric images helped define generations of women's aspirations and established Lauder's brand identity. Skrebneski had a meticulous process for achieving the distinctive "Lauder look" through careful staging of backgrounds, clothing, and poses.
Modern art began in the late 19th century after Impressionism and includes styles like Cubism, Minimalism, and Abstract Expressionism. It broke from traditional realistic depictions and allowed more freedom of expression. World Wars I and II exposed American artists to European styles and helped modern art gain popularity in the US. Artists like Jackson Pollock and Robert Rauschenberg used new techniques like dripping paint and incorporating found objects. Modern art continues to evolve as artists find new ways to comment on and interpret the modern world.
This document discusses collecting photography as an art form. PhotoRealism is a style of painting using photographs to create hyperrealistic images. Artists precisely replicate the details of a photograph using tools like cameras, projectors, and airbrushes. Popular in the 1960s-70s, PhotoRealist works depicted mundane urban environments and focused on technique over expression. Pioneering artists included Richard Estes, Ralph Goings, Chuck Close, and Duane Hanson, who created photo-realistic sculptures. While initially controversial, PhotoRealism influenced later hyperrealistic styles and can still be seen in video games and movies today.

Calligraphy, paper cutting, kite making, and knot tying are examples of Chinese folk art forms that live on today.
Here are a few thoughts on Ibrahim el-Salahi's painting The Mosque:
- The painting merges Sudanese decorative elements and Arabic calligraphy with Western artistic traditions like abstraction, reflecting el-Salahi's diverse influences from studying in both Sudan and London.
- Architectural elements like the minarets and elongated figure give a sense of the mosque setting, while calligraphic-like forms in motion imbue it with spiritual atmosphere.
- By synthesizing Sudanese, Arabic, and Western styles, el-Salahi was pioneering a new vision of African modernism in 1964 that blended cultural heritages.
- The artist drew from his background in calligraphy since childhood as well as formal

This document summarizes a research paper analyzing E.J. Bellocq's black and white portraits of prostitutes from Storyville, New Orleans in the 1910s. The research examined how the women were dressed or undressed in the photos, and compared their styles to typical women's fashion of the time period. Many women dressed in their finest clothes and accessories, while others were nude or partially clothed. The research found that most photos did not depict bedrooms or suggestiveness, but rather portrayed the women as dignified subjects, contradicting common stereotypes of prostitutes. Bellocq presented the photos as artistic works rather than advertisements for the women's services.

Students will learn to analyze works using the six characteristics of semiotics: addressor, addressee, message, codes, medium and context. They will also study elements and principles of art and design, and review developments in indigenous art, Malaysian modern art, Islamic art, and prehistoric art. The first two weeks cover introductions to the power of images and six components of semiotics concepts.
Photorealism was an art movement from the 1960s-1970s that aimed to depict photographic reality in paintings. Key characteristics included using photos and camera techniques to transfer images accurately onto canvas. Major artists featured Richard Estes, known for urban scenes; Duane Hanson, who made photorealistic sculptures of people; and Chuck Close, known for large portrait paintings. While initially criticized for removing artistry, photorealism gained acceptance for its technical skill in recreating the world in hyperrealistic detail. The movement influenced later artists and photorealism remains practiced today.

The passage describes the story of Wu Ping, a restauranteur in Chongqing, China whose home was slated for demolition to make way for a new development project. Wu Ping refused compensation and defended her property even as surrounding structures were torn down, leaving her house alone in a pit of rubble. Her act of defiance drew national attention and symbolized resistance to the rapid and often disruptive urban transformation occurring across China. The author uses Wu Ping's story to introduce themes related to city-building and redevelopment in China since economic reforms began in the late 1970s, a period that has seen unprecedented urban growth and change on a scale never seen before in history.

You can learn about my original aspiration of applying for this contemporary-art postgraduate programme based on my studio-art experiences, my experimentations and my confusions towards the notions of contemporary-art curatorship.
This is a very fundamental version of my research proposal for the admission interview of MAFA studies at CUHK Fine Arts. It was written right after attending Prof. Ho Siu-kee's admission talk in 2019, and there was no pandemic at that time. Now, the Kowloon Walled City Series is my graduation project. Looking back to my original idea before the admission, will there be some similarities between the research proposal and my current creative development?
1) Photography was initially seen as a threat to painting, as it could potentially replace the functions painting served such as documentation and portraiture.
2) However, photography ultimately had a positive impact on painting by freeing it from its documentary functions and allowing it to develop as a form of creative expression and abstraction.
3) Many painters utilized photography by using photos as references for their work or as sketches to develop ideas, helping painting evolve in new directions like Cubism.
The Art of Now - using Chinese contemporary art with studentsluiseguest
This document provides an overview of Luise Guest's research on contemporary Chinese art and its application in art education. It introduces Guest, her background and research interests. It discusses why the study of contemporary art, including Chinese art, is important for students. It presents several contemporary Chinese artists and their works as examples that could be used in case studies. The document advocates for engaging students with "the art of now" and making connections between contemporary art practices, students' own artmaking, and developing art literacy.
This document provides information on various portrait photographers throughout history. It discusses Diane Arbus and her portraits that looked beyond surfaces into troubled souls. It mentions Margaret Bourke-White being a pioneer in photojournalism and women's work. Richard Avedon is noted for his up close portraits that render personalities. Portraiture was also used as a form of official identification. Several other influential portrait photographers are mentioned such as Sally Mann, Edward Curtis, Fazal Sheikh, Elliott Erwitt, Dorothea Lange, Lewis Hine, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Imogen Cunningham, George Hurrell, William Klein, Peter Dench, Hazel Thompson, Alexander Rodchenko, Annie Leibov
The document discusses modernist painting and Clement Greenberg's theory of modernism from the 1960s. It provides Greenberg's definition of modernism as using the methods of a discipline to critique itself, in order to strengthen its competence. Greenberg emphasized the flatness of the picture plane as unique to painting. The document also discusses Morris Louis' abstract painting Saraband from 1959 as exemplifying Greenberg's theories through its shimmering, translucent veil created by color drips and the removal of the artist's hand from the work.
This document provides an in-depth review and analysis of an art exhibition by artist Jackie Lipton held at the Corinne Robbins gallery in Brooklyn. The exhibition featured 31 abstract paintings in various sizes, as well as prints. The reviewer praises Lipton's work for its vivid colors, dense textures, and ability to evoke complex feelings and imagined spaces without being overtly representational. Lipton's paintings draw from the entire history of abstract art and feel simultaneously anticipatory of new technological developments. The review provides biographical details about Lipton and her influences as a former participant in the Whitney Museum's street art program for youth in the 1960s-70s.
Photorealism is an art movement that originated in the United States in the 1960s involving the realistic replication of photographic images in paintings and sculptures. Artists such as Don Eddy, Chuck Close, Richard Estes, and Duane Hanson used photographs and careful technical skills to create hyperrealistic works. While initially criticized for its embrace of photography, photorealism challenged artistic conventions. It has had lasting influence and continues to fascinate viewers with its photo-like illusions.
Photorealism is an art movement that originated in the 1960s in the United States involving the realistic replication of photographic images in paintings and sculptures. Artists would use photographs as references to capture precise realistic details in their works. Some notable photorealist artists mentioned are Chuck Close, Richard Estes, and Duane Hanson. While initially criticized for its straightforward representation, photorealism challenged artistic conventions and focused on depicting American consumerism and popular culture. It has had lasting influence with contemporary photorealist artists continuing to push the boundaries of realism using modern digital tools.
The document discusses several artists and designers that have influenced the author's final project magazine. It provides background on Neville Brody, a graphic designer who pioneered postmodern design in magazines in the 1980s. It also discusses the Dada art movement of the early 20th century and how it influenced graphic design. Additional figures discussed include graphic designers David Carson and Jim Phillips, as well as photographers C.R. Stecyk III, Jeff Zielinski, and artist David Hockney. The author is interested in these figures' unconventional styles and breaking of conventions.
A.J. Epstein has been photographing and documenting LGBTQ history since the 1960s, capturing pivotal moments like Chicago's first pride parade in the early 1970s. His new books, Queer Culture and The Blonde Bomber, showcase these photos. Epstein finds photography is about having conversations with subjects to get genuine smiles and eye contact. His photos provide a glimpse into queer communities, politics, and figures of the time.
Abby Chen discusses the history and current state of Chinese art. She covers major periods and movements in modern Chinese art from the early 20th century to today. Chen also shares her focus on introducing emerging Chinese artists working in new media to international audiences. She believes art can unite communities and aims to promote traditional and contemporary Chinese art.
This anthology of contemporary Chinese poetry traces the development of poetry from the Cultural Revolution through 2000. [1] Poets born during or after the Cultural Revolution were deeply affected by its strict control over artistic expression. [2] The earliest poems still use conventional language and imagery, but later poems incorporate modern influences and explore new landscapes as poets travel abroad. [3] The anthology shows Chinese poetry gradually embracing new themes, styles, and influences to push past the constraints of the past.
This document provides an interview with Anita Wong, a contemporary Asian American artist specializing in modern and traditional Chinese art. Some key points:
- Wong has been drawing and painting since she was a child, and knew from a young age she wanted to be an artist. She is influenced by both Western and Eastern art traditions.
- Her art often focuses on nature themes and exploring movement. She aims to develop unique styles that blend traditional Chinese techniques with modern influences.
- Wong believes in keeping an open mind with her art and not restricting herself to trends or styles. She sees her personal style as an evolving reflection of who she is.
- She has conducted projects exploring the secret "Nüshu
This document discusses the challenges facing traditional Chinese opera as it seeks to maintain cultural identity in modern China. It notes that while reading Chinese classics has seen a revival, performing arts have received less attention. The Chinese government now aims to promote opera in schools, but questions remain as to what pieces truly represent traditional culture given issues like outdated ideology. Selecting arias that appeal to students while avoiding problematic messages is difficult. Overall, the document examines the complexities of using performing arts to both connect with cultural roots and remain relevant in the modern era.

In Odoo, making a field required can be done through both Python code and XML views. When you set the required attribute to True in Python code, it makes the field required across all views where it's used.
