Last Sunday's lesson, 1 Peter 1"b" with a bit of review on "a". By way of opening illustration, I was friends with a Golden Gloves state champion, amazingly talented at age 16, who I sparred with just one time. One punch, even just a slight jab on his part, was enough to retire me from any fantasies of being a boxer! I'm sure Peter felt infinitely more so about Jesus Christ, just as did the other apostles who knew His Life Death and Resurrection. God Bless!
Dr. John Oakes gave a sermon on Christian membership and Freedom in Christ in San Diego 8/31/14. The lesson uses material from his new book Golden Rule Membership (www.ipibooks.com)

To make his case for the Resurrection, Paul cites both his subjective, personal experience in addition to objective, historical evidence. We should do the same. For though people have their philosophical prejudices, given the historical facts that scholars of all stripes agree upon, the Resurrection is the best historical explanation.
This power point was used by Dr. John Oakes as a follow-up lesson at the 2012 ICEC in Los Angeles on October 21, 2012. It is about the reasons the church in the first three centuries was able to conquer the known world for Jesus and a suggestion of how faithful Christians today can see the same thing happen in our world.

This sermon concludes the Faithbook series focusing on the faith of the believer in Christ. We explore the way in which Jesus is superior to the Old Covenant and take on the very challenging question, "How were the OT saints saved?" If by their good works, in what way was Jesus' death necessary?

Knowledge makes people arrogant. This concept seems to be completely different from the world’s thinking. If I learn more, then I should know the breadth of knowledge. I should be like a learned person, and I should be more humble. But why the Bible said so, if this is a truth that violates the rules of the world. In this chapter, let us carefully look for the truth of the Bible for detail analysis.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.
The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.

Slide 2: Introduction to Mindfulness
Mindfulness, defined as the conscious, non-judgmental observation of the present moment, has deep roots in Buddhist meditation practice but has gained significant popularity in the Western world in recent years. In today's society, filled with distractions and constant stimuli, mindfulness offers a valuable tool for regaining inner peace and reconnecting with our true selves. By cultivating mindfulness, we can develop a heightened awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, leading to a greater sense of clarity and presence in our daily lives.

1. 2 Thess 3:6-15
I am convinced most of the population has no idea what Jesus was actually
saying in John 3:5. Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man
be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
To be born= of one who brings others over to his way of life, to convert
someone
Of water=of water in rivers, in fountains, in pools
And Spirit= the rational spirit, the power by which the human being feels,
thinks, decides
So, one who is born (converted) of the water( medium by which God chose) and
the spirit (the rational conclusion, based upon evidence presented, of obedience
to the gospel) he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Matt 7:21:ff
2. • When we read passages such as Eph 5:15 “walk circumspectly”
• Romans 6:4 “walk in newness of life”
• Romans 8:1 “who walk after the spirit”
• Romans 13:13 “walk honestly”
• 2 Cor 5:7 “walk by faith”
• Gal 5:16 “walk in the spirit”
• Eph 4:1 “walk worthy”
• Phil 3:16; 18; Col 1:10; Col 2:6; 1 Thess 2:12
• It becomes abundantly clear our Lord intended for us to be changed
after being baptized.
• 2 Cor 5:17
3. That which was amiss among the
Thessalonians
• There were some who walked disorderly, not after the tradition
they received from the apostle, v. 6.
• They were guilty of this disorderly walking; they did not live
regularly, nor govern themselves according to the rules of
Christianity, (1 Thess 4:4)
• They were not living (walking) according to the precepts delivered
by the apostle, which they had received
• It is required of those who have received the gospel, and who
profess a subjection to it, that they live according to the gospel.
• If they do not, they are to be counted disorderly persons.
4. Rules of Christianity
• Eph 4:29 “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth,
but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister
grace unto the hearers.” (cf. James 1:26; Matt 12:36-37)
• The one who does not obey this is walking disorderly
• Col 3:9 “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old
man with his deeds;”
• The one who lies, is walking disorderly cf. Rev 21:8
• Heb 10:25, “not forsaking”
• The one who hardly ever attends is walking disorderly cf Heb 10:26
5. • Gal 1:8-9 “preach any other gospel”
• The one who brings false doctrine walks disorderly
• 2 Thess 3:14 “obey not our word”
• Disobedience is walking disorderly
• Romans 16:17 “cause divisions” ( 1 Cor 1:10)
• These also walk disorderly.
• The whole point is that Jesus expects us, even demands of us to
change (Col 3:9: Eph 4:22)
• No change equals no conversion
• 1 Cor 15:33; 1 Cor 15:58
• I believe we have been too slack concerning the changes required
6. • After one is baptized we don’t expect them to change overnight
• Why is that? Should we not expect them to try? (fruits worthy)
• The apostle Paul did Acts 22:16: 1 Cor 9:27
• The eunuch did Acts 8:39
• I did, have you? Can you? Will you?
• The lack of discipline in the church over the years because we were
afraid of losing members has not profited us anything
• Those that left are still gone
• They were never of us 1 John 2:19
• Asked one time, “Larry, where would you draw the line?”
• My answer then and now is the line I hold to is the one God set in
place, His word. 2 John 9-11; Eph 5:11; 1 Peter 4:11; Col 3:17
7. •WHERE IS THE LINE YOU HAVE DRAWN?
•WHAT IS IT YOU WANT FROM GOD?
•WHY IS THE DEATH OF JESUS NOT ENOUGH
FOR YOU?
•WHY DO YOU SERVE THE GOD OF THIS
WORLD? 2 COR 4:3-4
•WHY DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAN WHAT I SAY?
JOHN 8:43-44
8. What to do?
•Gal 6:1 --- Restore one taken in a fault
•Matthew 18:15--- Tell it to the church
•James 5:19-20--convert one who errs from the
truth
•Heb 13:1--Let brotherly love continue
•Gal 5:14– law is fulfilled in one word, love
•Better to obey than to sacrifice 1 Sam 15:22
10. OUR GOAL
• Preach the whole counsel of God. Acts 20:27
• Preach the gospel of Christ not men. Matt 28:18-20
• Earnestly contend for the truth. Jude 3
• We want to see people who have been born again (converted)
• People who are faithful Rev 2:10
• People who want to be workers for the Lord
• Help save those who are lost
• Help those who have been saved continue to fight the good fight
