Last Sunday's lesson, 1 Peter 1"b" with a bit of review on "a". By way of opening illustration, I was friends with a Golden Gloves state champion, amazingly talented at age 16, who I sparred with just one time. One punch, even just a slight jab on his part, was enough to retire me from any fantasies of being a boxer! I'm sure Peter felt infinitely more so about Jesus Christ, just as did the other apostles who knew His Life Death and Resurrection. God Bless!

Criminal U: Behind the barbed wire and bars of America's prisonsCriminalU
Criminal U: my education behind the barbed wire and bars of America’s billion-dollar taxpayer boondoggle is a fast-paced memoir that reads like fiction -- think James Patterson meets Piper Kerman -- and builds on the public fascination with prison life. It is a stark, authentic portrayal of my education at Criminal U.
“Prison don’t teach motherfuckers how to stop what they doin’,” an inmate told me shortly after I went to prison. “They teach you how to do it better. Believe that.” I soon learned this first-hand on the road to personal redemption and recovery.
Reading the letters of the New Testament (including 1 Peter), we notice how widespread the Christian faith had already become just 20-30 years after the death of Jesus. How did that happen?
This is our ETB Sunday School Lesson, a catch-up of almost 2 weeks' worth. It covers the last part of the gospel of John Chapter 19, then on through C. 20. It has some notes & extra verses. Reading the story in John, we are refreshed in thinking about the Lord, how He took the horribly impossible cup of judgment we could not take for our sins, in order that we could have a New Life. The physical resurrection was just a visible part of the whole Truth, that Jesus has paved the Way for us. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life -- and no one can come to the Father except through Him and His death on the cross (John 14:6). But now He has opened up God's High Way. As He told Mary Magdalene, "Go, find my brothers and tell them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" God through Jesus has identified with all of us, even though we don't deserve it!

How is it possible for Jesus’ death to save us from our sins. The key is propitiation. Just as the passover lamb appeased God’s wrath, so the blood of Jesus provides the way for our return to fellowship with God.
“Faith Through The Fire” - (1 Peter; Guidance In Troubled Times) - Peter tells us that God keeps us “Through faith”, but persecution will effect our faith. The effect upon our faith however is determined by our attitude & response! (1 Pet 1:7-9; 3:14,15; 5:10) How can we respond properly & in a beneficial way when we’re treated poorly because of our faith?. - AUDIO / KEYNOTE / PPT / PDF - (11/17/2013)

Today's SS lesson, "Living As Strangers". We Christians are to be in the world, looking to love and point people to God's grace by our examples and our genuine good deeds. We first must reject falseness (the old life) in our own lives, then we will be free to be Jesus servants by others
The Apostle Peter wrote this letter to encourage believers who are facing trials and persecution. As we face the storms in our lives, Peter offers comfort and hope. This confident hope gives us the encouragement and enablement we need for daily living.

This is a Sunday School lesson per ETB (Southern Baptist curriculum) for (covering) part of the Lord Jesus' sermon on the mount, regarding how, as people within His kingdom, we can go far beyond the law and show extreme love and conformity to what God has had in mind all along: for us to become like Him (His Son, Jesus Christ). In so doing (following Him and allowing Him to live thru us), we become peacemakers, will be called sons of God, causing people's heads to turn upward and to give our God the credit and honor for what He alone could do in our new-born lives.
This was for the ETB SS lesson of Dec. 2, on Hosea chapters 1-3. (Sorry it's late, but the Christmas mail was slow :>)! God sets up an awesome object lesson in Hosea's life, relating to Israel's unfaithfulness to him (idolatry, adultery, you-name-it) and how faithfully He loves them despite of it all. It's interesting to see how God uses and chooses names to show what's going on in the culture that claims to -- but refuses to -- be faithful to Him. The parallels with our modern American "Christendom" are many -- may we not hesitate to seek Him and apply these lessons into our own lives!
Don't be surprised when -- not if -- you find yourself suffering in God's will -- This will happen! You are folllowing Christ's example of reproving the world with a love for them that hates sin enough to suffer. Paul said that in suffering, you're in God's death-to-Life march, on display for the world to marvel at. So prepare and consider proper suffering the honor it is, that is to be rewarded by Him.
These slides are for Lifeway ETB lesson of Nov. 4. Peter cautions leaders to be committed examples, to win others to further follow Christ -- not being overlords, but exemple servants who know God's grace. He also tells younger Christians to respect the older ones -- who God matures, as we know. AND that all believers should humble (not overestimate) themselves to receive the favor of God, Whose great hand is over the whole process of growing-up-in-Christ. Watch out for the deceiver Satan, who is on the prowl for anyone he can destroy. Know that after suffering for Christ, God will strengthen you.
This is a SS lesson for 10/21/2012. Dying to self / living for God puts you into His Community (Body) that you share in, and that shares with you. You can more than "survive" -- really, thrive as a serving functioning, loving part of that body. His Church of redeemed believers is His joy, and He will be found in them: to God be all the glory! This lesson shares some other passages by Paul about God's multi-faceted grace that shows up for all the world to see in His Church.
Aug. 26 Sunday School lesson, finishing up Ruth. When dealing with Boaz, Ruth didn't just travel to the 'outlet mall' for some bargain basement clearance caliber of husband! Because she was busy serving God, loving people, and oh by the way allowing God to prepare His will in this 'department', you see what happened in her life, the many "great values" that she found! Pardon the shopping analogies, but this little book has some great godly characters who grew in caring about others, and left a tremendous legacy (read the surprise ending). This book has a lot to do with how God eternally loves, waits on and serves us -- look for Jesus! God Bless!!

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

1 Peter
Peter the apostle writes to the elect exiles scattered of Israel, ~A.D. 63-64
:2 They (we) are saved by God’s Spirit. “May peace increase to you!”
:3 Without deserving it, by boundless mercy believers are born again into
Everlasting LIFE, thru Christ’s resurrection.
God could have KO ’ed us !!

and an inheritance that’s like “the Gold” ___
:5.. AND are guarded by God’s Spirit!

we’re now in this very troubled world
8. Review of 1 Peter 1: 7-12
.
:7 Trials / tests are smelting fire refines our gold “ore” to be
pure, to last. Trials: 1. Prove our faith (James 1: 2-4,
Heb. 11; 2 Cor. 4:17,13:5) 2. Make our crowns as we
grow in Christ (Rev. 4:10, 2 Tim. 4:8, Eph. 4:15)
:8-9 Like a fiance’ with engagement ring, waiting for the
Blessed Day to be totally His (He whom you love)
Prophets & angels were “jealous” (not really!), but told by
God’s Spirit that Christ would suffer, & glories would follow.
“You” have seen these things!
9. Let us explore…
What is Holiness?
Who needs it (Why is it important) ?
How can we ‘get it’ ?
10. 1. Because God Is Holy (1 Pet. 1:13-16)
13
So brace up your minds; be sober; set your hope wholly and
unchangeably on the grace that is coming to you when Jesus Christ
(the Messiah) is revealed. 14 [Live] as children of obedience [to God]; do
not conform yourselves to the evil desires from your former ignorance,
15
but as the One Who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in
all your conduct and manner of living. 16 For it is written, “You shall be
holy, for I am holy”.
:13 Self-control…. How can a person’s mind be ‘drunk’?
How crucial is it for Christians to think soberly? (Luke 21:34)
How does thinking about Jesus’ return help us (1 John 3:3)?
The whole purpose of creation AND redemption is to ‘have it ALL’ in
FINAL worship of God’s Son!
:14 Why is it important for us to obey God? Why is this a part of
God’s will (Why doesn’t He just allow us to sin?)
The proof of Jesus’ triumph is our behavior that’s victorious (Php. 4:1, 1
Thess. 2:19-20)
Jesus longs to share His glory and joy with us – but only truthfully, as
we imitate Him. We are remade conquerors in Him, submitted –HOLY!
11. More VERSES for 1. Because God Is Holy (1 Pet. 1:13-16)
1 John 3:3
•3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself just as
He is pure.
Philippians 4:1
•4 So then, my brothers, you are dearly loved and longed for—my
joy and crown. In this manner stand firm in the Lord, dear friends.
1 Thessalonians 2:19-20
•19 For who is our hope or joy or crown of boasting in the presence
of our Lord Jesus at His coming? Is it not you? 20 For you are our
glory and joy!
12. 2. Because God Is Judge (1 Pet. 1:17) [HCSB]
17
And if you address as Father the One who judges impartially based on
each one’s work, you are to conduct yourselves in fear during the time
of your temporary residence.
•Our earthly fathers disciplined us, & we respected them (Heb. 12:9)
•God wants us as His heavenly (New) children to have a pleasing
sacrificial life like Christ, respect-FULL
•God will examine our works, and ‘shake’ them for final, eternal quality
(Heb. 12:25-29)
•If God is your FATHER, then you’ll love Jesus’ commands (Jn. 8:42)
•“Reverence” is phobos: fear, dread (see Heb. 12:25-29; Luke 12:5)
•God will not hear excuses for not being devoted to Him. If we are
skirting Him, salvation may be missing! (Lk. 12:5, Matt.7:22, Heb. 6a)
•Reverence starts at salvation – continues with repentances throughout
life (Rev. 3:19; Heb. 12:6)
•If not repenting, we will be judged out of His church, or perhaps even
this world (Matt. 18:17; Rev. 2:22; 1 Cor. 5:5, 11;30)
•We are to receive Jesus’ love & respond as His bride (Rev.19:7-9,
13. . Because of Our Redemption (1 Pet. 1:18-21) [The Message]
•Jesus did not just give us His opinion, or commands – He is our
Leader, Example, Purchaser out of sin, at the price of His own blood
(death) – and that for the whole world’s sins (1 John 2:2).
•He made the New Order (Creation) that the entire world is now required
to CHANGE (Acts 17:31, Jn. 5:22), or be judged forever guilty
•The ransom paid was eternal, DIVINE blood – perfectly infinite, beyond
any ransom for earthly slaves – beyond any value we could put on it.
•:21 We (believers) are NOW IN HIM, having submitted (salvation) and
inducted into His body, identified with His victory (Rom. 6:3, Gal. 3:27)
14. 4. Because of Our Purification (1 Pet. 1:22-25) [The Message]
•:22 Having obeyed in repentance, now: MOVE IN LOVE like Christ!
•Love obeys God, cooperates with Him to dig a pure ‘channel heart’, for
His love to flow through! (1 Tim. 1:5, Jn. 14:23).
•Love is absolutely essential to working in God’s Way (Jn. 13:34; Gal.
5:6; 1 Cor. 13; 1 Thess. 1:3).
•:23-24 (Isaiah 40:6-9) "old order" plants (this life) are passing away
•Jam. 1:9-11, Luke 12:27-31 – We are to show the “New Order” Seed of
Christ, God’s “Unbelievable” New Life–beautiful!
•His life, if His Words (Life) are in us, WILL last forever! (John 10:28-30,
14:3, 15:7)
15. I am full of earth
You are heaven’s worth
I am stained with dirt, prone to depravity
You are everything that is bright and clean
The antonym of me
You are divinity
But a certain sign of grace is this:
From a broken earth flowers come up, Pushing through the dirt
…
You are everything that is bright and clean
And You’re covering me with Your majesty
And the truest sign of grace was this:
From wounded hands redemption fell down
Liberating man

:18 Our treasure in Heaven is Jesus’ infinite, redeeming Love(Matt.6:19) :19 (See 1 Pet. 1:2) : Old testament foreshadowed “sprinkled“ (Ex. 24:8,29:21,..). Believers are TRUE priesthood, consecrated literally by HIS blood. He is our perfect High Priest who has gone into the Holy of Holies to offer sacrifice for us, at the Mercy Seat. OT pictures the NT! :20 clues us on “foreordaining”: God prepared beforehand ALL works in Christ (both old and new spiritual creation). :21 Reflecting God’s Love even more : Even your ability to hang on & trust is by God’s design (Eph. 2: 8-9) It would be very wrong to ignore that this should TOTALLY affect us!
His new Seed will endure… What is that Seed? God’s Word… Really, Christ Himself! (John 6:63). Don’t reject the transplanting you have, of God’s SO great grace - Life! Embrace Him!
