2. 2
2 Peter 1 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add
to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
The understood subject here is you.
It’s not for us to sit down and wait for these
qualities to be added to us.
It won’t happen accidentally.
Giving all diligence, you add to your faith virtue.
Giving all diligence, you add to your virtue
knowledge.
3. 3
I must believe God with all faith.
Then I must add to my faith in order to grow:
Virtue
And to that virtue I must add knowledge
It takes spiritual effort.
Worship, Prayer, Prayerful study
4. 4
2 Peter 1:6 And to knowledge temperance; and to
temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to
brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be
in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall
neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of
our Lord Jesus Christ.
5. 5
And to knowledge temperance;
As we gain knowledge, we find the need for
self-control in the Power of the Holy Spirit.
Temperance is the strength and power to do
the right thing.
The strength and Power to do the right thing
only comes through the Power of God.
6. 6
and to temperance patience
Temperance is self-control produced in us by
the Holy Spirit.
Patience is cheerful endurance, again only
produced in us by God’s Holy Spirit.
7. 7
And to patience godliness
Godliness is living out the character of God in
our daily lives.
When our natural inclination is to be angry and
curse, we choose to be at peace.
When our natural inclination is to give up, we
choose to keep on keeping on.
8. 8
And to godliness brotherly kindness
This is talking about our actions of love toward
our brothers and sisters.
Give to the needy
Do chores
Visit the shut-in
9. 9
And to brotherly kindness charity 1 Cor 13
1 Corinthians 13 4 Charity suffereth long, and is
kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not
itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself
unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily
provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in
iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all
things, believeth all things, hopeth all things,
endureth all things. 8 Charity never faileth: …
10. 10
8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they
make you that ye shall neither be barren nor
unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus
Christ.
So many people know of Jesus, but they don’t
bear the fruit of that knowledge because these
traits are not abounding in them.
Instead the lusts of the flesh abound in their daily
lives, and I am talking about
Christians.
11. 11
9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and
cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was
purged from his old sins. 10 Wherefore the rather,
brethren, give diligence to make your calling and
election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall
never fall:
He has been saved, but not much changed.
He went down to an altar and shed some crocodile
tears, but his heart is still hard and he walks in
darkness through the lusts of the flesh.
