Isha Vidhya operates 8 rural schools in India providing education to over 4,050 children, with plans to open a new school. Many students are first-generation learners and 60% receive full scholarships. Isha Vidhya aims to improve educational opportunities for girls while preserving local culture. They also work with the government to adopt 31 schools, providing training, resources and initiatives to benefit over 26,800 additional students.  8 rural schools (7 in TN in districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Tuticorin
and Nagarkoil, and 1 in AP in Chittoor Dt.) are creating a bright future for over 4,050 children
 New school starting June 2013 at Dharmapuri Dt.
 Many of the students are first-generation school-goers
 About 60% of the students are supported by full tuition scholarships. The rest pay a nominal fee

 Education beyond literacy and rudimentary skills by following a holistic approach

 Balanced mid-day meals containing proteins and salt fortified with 11 micro-nutrients
o For most children, this is the only wholesome meal of the day.
 Most students learn even basic hygiene only in the school
Government School Adoption Project
With experience in setting up and running schools in rural areas, Isha Vidhya is only too aware of the
challenges faced by government schools. These include a high student-teacher ratio, lack of basic facilities
such as toilets, benches, library books, lack of inspired teachers and a high drop-out rate among students.
Isha is, therefore, currently working with the government to dramatically impact the quality of education in
government schools through critical interventions by adopting 31 government schools in the districts of
Coimbatore, Dharmapuri and Salem and is using its extensive experience to benefit over 26,800 students.
Initiatives include:
 Hiring and training teachers to fill critical gaps in the classrooms & reduce student-teacher ratio
 Providing special assistance to slow learners by hiring extra teachers
 Improving children’s English language skills through additional methodologies
 Infusing hitherto neglected aspects like sports, yoga, environmental education, art & craft, health
and hygiene.
