2 Minute Analysis:

How is gender represented in my
         film opening?
Sound
Eerie music starts as film starts, end after a minute.
Same music comes back in for the last 10 seconds of footage.
There is a knife sound when we see it cut through a
tomato, more knife cut sounds sound over a following title
where we don’t see the knife.
This is similar to when we hear a vibration of a mobile phone
over a title then see a mobile phone vibrating and when there
is a scraping sound before we see stirring in a pan.
The music ducks when dialogue is spoken in the first half of the
film opening. Sound bridge to title.
The music stops when there is a knock at the window, a
synchronous sound of a bowl being knocked off the side is
sounded followed by tense music and the name of the film.
The name of the film has a smashing sound effect to show the
                         bowl has smashed.

Analysis.
The first shot is an establishing tracking shot in which we see a house with a teenaged girl in the kitchen. Eerie music
comes in from the first shot and is consistent until it ducks for dialogue at 47seconds for 7 seconds then it returns to
original volume until 1:09 when it drops out. The same music comes back in for the last 10seconds of film. The setting is set
at night because of the natural dark lighting which could already show us it is could be a horror. The slow , unstable tracking
up to the house is unsettling because we can guess it is someone looking in on the teenaged girl in the kitchen but we
don’t know who they are or why they are slowly approaching the house. This makes the teenaged girl in the kitchen seem
to be the victim which is a traditional representation that we would expect to see in a horror film. Several cutaways are
used to show us what the teenaged girl inside the house is doing. Jump cuts are used in one of the cutaways where there is
a sequence of shots showing tomato soup being poured from a pan into a bowl. Another cutaway shows a high angle of a
tomato being cut, a silver bladed knife is used to violently cut through the tomato to maybe foreshadow violence or blood
and flesh due to the colour and texture of the tomato. Knife sounds of it cutting through the tomato is still audible by a
sound bridge when the image changes to a title. The titles fade in between cutaways or house tracking on a black screen.
The font is in dark red and black like the majority of horror films, so we can be more certain that this is a horror film. There
is a synchronous knock at the window in which makes the character is the kitchen jump, knocking a bowl off the side. This
could show the teenaged girl could be already on edge about something or is generally sensitive. This could typically be a
traditionally representation of a teenage girl vulnerable. The title of the film appears in red writing which then smashes
into pieces with a smashing sound effect to have a double meaning – the bowl which was knocked off the side being
smashed on the floor and the name of the film ‘Pieces’ being metaphoric to possible events in the film. This is traditional
for the name of a horror film to have relevance to the story. There is a close up of the smashed bowl of soup on the floor
which is then zoomed out slowly then cuts to a match on action of the teenaged girl opening the door to her friend who
knocked on the window. The friend is also a teenaged girl but with blonde hair, a navy blue coat, denim jeans, navy blue
converse and a cream coloured scarf. The first teenage girl has brown hair, a red jumper, black leggings and black socks. We
have now changed our minds of who is more vulnerable because the appearance of the second teenage girl is traditionally
seen to get harmed first in a horror movie. Dialogue is exchanged in which the 2 teenage girls decided to clean up some of
the soup on the floor. They clean up some of the soup which is shown by high angled shot reverse shots until, through
dialogue, they decide to leave clearing up to do something else. A tilt up of the characters is used to show them both
standing up to leave the kitchen. Once they have left the kitchen and turned the light off– whilst talking about what film to
watch- a creepy figure appears past the window as we hear the line ‘not a horror, I won’t be able to get to sleep’ from the
first teenage girl in the distance. This shows their reality could potentially turn into a horror.
