I AM THE OCEAN
How can we make an ocean? Our recipe will need molecules of hydrogen, oxygen e
some pinches of heavy electrical charges. Don’t forget to cool the planet to less than
100°C (and a good amount of gravity is very important to avoid the recipe from flying
away). That interaction will form little drops that group together until they start falling
from the sky, making pools that grow and grow…
It may seem simple but the seas formed from those “ingredients” nearly five billion
years ago. The ocean is Earth’s vital force, covering more than 70% of the planet's
surface, driving weather, regulating temperature, and supporting all different species.
Its currents make seawater travel hundreds of kilometers, contributing to heat transfer,
biodiversity variations and global climate regulation – 86% of global evaporation occurs
over the ocean, providing the largest part of water vapor present in the atmosphere.
Chemically composed by water, minerals and many other chemical elements found on
the periodic table such as nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon, the sea is the home of
approximately 200 thousand different species – an underestimated number which may
actually get to millions. There are innumerous ecosystems resulting in a vast genetic
heritage essential to maintaining life. Our lives.
It brings us memories and distinct feelings but we should remember that the ocean is
not just the beach. It is way beyond what we can see and we still have a lot to discover.
HIGHLIGHT:
Although there is only one, the ocean can be geographically divided into five bodies of
water: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Antarctic. Seawater covers 71% of the planet
but more than 80% of the underwater territory remains unmapped, unobserved and
unexplored.
VIDEO:
NASA produced this visualization that shows the ocean surface currents around the
world. “Perpetual Ocean” video presents the swirling flows from dozens of thousands of
currents and offers a realistic view of the order and chaos in the waters that go round
the seas. The video was produced using satellite data and different studies to show the
different trajectories those currents have. Many of them travel thousands of kilometers
transporting warm water at speeds higher than 6 km/h. A nature work of art!
