1. No mysteries about the Ocean
Brazilian popular music gifted us many songs about the sea. They talk about missing
home, great loves, the beauty of the waters and what lies in its depth. They also show
us that our imagination of the ocean is always full of mysteries. Great artists such as
Maria Bethânia ("Abracei o mar na lua cheia, abracei o mar…") and Clara Nunes ("É
água do mar, é maré cheia ô, mareia ô, mareia") sing some of those songs.
But what do Brazilians think about the ocean? "Oceano sem mistério", a research by
The Fundação Grupo Boticário, in partnership with UNESCO and the Universidade
Federal de São Paulo (Unifesp), brought some answers about that. The study intended
to know if the population knew about the marine environment and if they were prone to
developing new habits in favour of the ocean’s health.
Some findings from the research:
- 10% of Brazilians have never been to the beach;
- 40% of the interviewees believe their actions do not impact the ocean at all;
- 70% of the interviewees state that tourism and climate are connected to the ocean;
- 82,2% of Brazilians would be willing to change their habits in favour of the ocean;
*Inhabitants from 38 cities were interviewed, 62% live in state capital cities, and 41%
live in coastal cities.
