Google announced plans to build ultra-fast fiber optic internet networks in several U.S. cities, with download speeds up to 1 Gbps, 100 times faster than average broadband, and upload speeds of 1 Gbps. The first city to receive Google Fiber is Kansas City, where construction began in 2012 and internet service launched in late 2013, offering internet speeds up to 1 Gbps for $70/month. Google Fiber TV service was also launched in Kansas City, providing up to 120 TV channels for $120/month.
