Google Fiber is offering ultra-high speed internet and TV services in Kansas City, Kansas. It provides internet speeds up to 100 times faster than the average connection. Google Fiber offers a basic free internet option at regular speeds or gigabit internet and TV packages for $70-120 per month. The gigabit internet provides speeds of 1,000 megabits per second, allowing users to download full HD movies in less than a minute. While drawbacks include slightly slower wireless speeds and a limited channel selection, most see Google Fiber as a significant improvement over traditional internet and TV providers.

Broadband infrastructure in the Arrowhead Region of Minnesota provides essential but limited connectivity. Recent FCC standards define broadband as requiring minimum speeds of 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload, which many rural areas do not meet. Fixed wireline connections are unable to reach the FCC's 2022 goal of 25 Mbps/3 Mbps for over 90% of some areas. While wireless and satellite options exist, they have disadvantages like slower speeds over distance, latency issues, and data caps that make them inadequate substitutes for fiber broadband. Grants from organizations like DEED and USDA aim to close the digital divide, but significant investment is still needed to bring fiber broadband to underserved parts of rural Minnesota.

Editor's Notes
Google Fiber is a new kind of internet that is currently being tested in Kansas City , Kansa. It is a project that Google is working on and plans to hopefully sooner than later spread to the rest of the United States. It picks up its name from the fiber being installed in utility poles all the way to the resident’s homes. The “fiber” is really fiber—a thin thread of glass you. The installation is a two-day process, and Google installers come to your house at the time of your choice and not during their “window” period unlike other providers (Google, 2012).----- Meeting Notes (12/13/12 11:19) -----Google Fiber is a new kind of internet, running 100 times faster than the internet we are use to today, and is currently being tested in Kansas City, Kansas. One might wonder why they choose to name it Fiber. Well it picks up its name from the actual fiber, which is also know as a thin thread of glass, that is being installed in utility poles around neighborhoods. The instalation is a two day process, and google installers come to your home at the time of your convenience and not during their "window" period, unlike other providers. ----- Meeting Notes (12/13/12 12:03) -----So what is Google Fiber you might wonder?…Well google is currently working on providing a different kind of internet and Television subcription to your neighborhood. But what makes it so different? Well, that it's processing speed is 100X faster than the average internet being used today. The service will come with an optional HDTV subscription, and is currently being tested in Kansas City, Kansas with hopes to expand to the rest of the United States sooner than later. Regular internet is now available to everyone living in Kansas City at no cost, hoping to encourage users to subscribe to the much better internet, google fiber.----- Meeting Notes (12/13/12 17:14) -----So what is Google Fiber you might wonder?…Well google is currently working on providing a different kind of internet and Television subcription to your neighborhood. The service will offer three options. The first package includes free regular broadband internet option, a 1Gbps internet option, a networking box with an included firewall for protection, 1 Tb of Google Drive Cloud storage so you can access all your files from anywhere at any time, all for $70 per month for a one year contract. Google Fiber is currently waiving the $300 installation fee to those living in Kansas City. Question here is: Will that large fee still be waived when the broadband begins spreading to the rest of the U.S.? (Daily, 2012).----- Meeting Notes (12/13/12 19:13) -----Google fiber is offering its services through 3 different bundles. The most basic one being the Gigabit Internet Package. The Gigabit plus TV package is a somewhat fancy name for internet and TV bundle. It comes with a price tag of $120 per month. The package includes no data usage limit, networking box with a included firewall for protection, an HD=ready and Bluetooth enabled TV box, over 274 channels, with optional add-on channels at a small fee, 1 TB of Google Drive cloud storage, a 2 TB storage box, and two remote controls: The Google Fiber remote and the Nexus 7 Tablet which .----- Meeting Notes (12/14/12 21:16) -----the second and most exciting package is the Gigabit + TV package. With a 2 year contract at $120/month + taxes and fees, users will also have access to super fast internet with no data caps, receive the same previously mention networking box, and 1 terabyte of google drive cloud storage. In addition, the package will include an HD-ready and bluetooth enabled TV Box, with over 174 channels and optional add-on channels at the small fee of $10 or $15 dollars depending on your choice. It doesn't end there though. You will also receive a 2 terabyte storage box, which I will discuss more in the next slide, and 2 remote controls: The google Fiber Remote and a Nexus 7 tablet which will also work as a remote.
The Google Fiber Storage Box is a storage unit, just like a USB flash drive or a portable hard drive, in which you’ll be able to record and save TV shows, movies, and more. The unit consist of 2 terabytes of storage and the ability to record 500 hours of HD content, which later can be viewed from any other device in your home, kind of like the DVRs we know if today. Another supercool feature in this device and probably the coolest feature, is that it can record up to 8 shows at the same time. This means one will be able to record more shows than one is use to seeing on a regular basis. Kinda cool huh? (Burns, 2012)----- Meeting Notes (12/14/12 21:38) -----So what is a storage box?well, it is a longer name for a DVR, which is a device that records TV shows or information for later viewing. Google Fiber is also currently offering free internet to those residing in Kansas City, in hopes for them to push towards the superfast internet sooner than later. There is a catch to this though, unlike all the other services that Google Fiber is providing, this free internet comes with a $300 installation fee which happens to be waived for all other packages. On the plus side though, the free service is guaranteed for at least 7 years. Not bad right? Another plus side to this is that if one does choose to start playing for the super fast internet, they will not have to pay for nor install anything anymore, it will all be just a phone call away (Waugh, 2012).----- Meeting Notes (12/14/12 22:57) -----Googles 3rd offered package isn't all that exciting, but it works. With a $300 hundred installation fee, google fiber in kansas city is currently offering free regular internet for at least 7 years guaranteed, with no data caps. The cool thing here is that subscribers can upgrade to fiber speed anytime, with no additional equipment needed. Which then leads me to a question: Will this package stay the same when it starts spreading to the rest of the united states? or will it change? Also something I forgot to mention earlier was that package 1 and 2 had a waived construction fee of $300. How about those packages, will they stay the same?
Understanding the process speed of pretty much all technology found today is almost impossible to understand. So what does one gigabit mean, and how fast really is it? If we break it down to smaller numbers, and use real life examples for comparison, it is easier to grasp how fast this internet really is. Todays internet being used by most Americans (unless you live in Kansas City) has an average processing speed of five megabits per second. Google Fiber has a processing speed of 1,000 megabits per the same 1 second. How fast does that sound? Superfast of course. This is why downloading an HD movie through Google Fiber takes about a minute or less. Like anything else nowadays, Google Fiber also comes with some minor setbacks. For starters, when accessing the internet via a Wi-Fi signal the broadband connection speed is reduced by three times, which is not too bad when considering that it is already one-hundred times faster than what we are use to. The second drawback is that the TV service does not yet have things like YouTube and HBO, which could be a bit annoying when using the services on a regular basis on top of watching TV, being that one would then be switching back and forth between devices and remote controls. Which leads to the last drawback, one must use the Google Fiber remote control when using Netflix, thus cannot use the supercool tablet remote control. Google Fiber might have some minor draw backs, but most of the country should be praying that Google decides to start the fiber installation process in there city next. With an affordable price tag and one hundred times the speed, it makes todays average internet look like a Chihuahua barking at a huge pitbull—ridiculous. is what makes this the beginning of a new kind of future.Imagine all the time we would save when surfing the web, then think of all the other things you could do with that extra time.
