STRUCTURE OF ENGLISH
In English grammar, sentence
structure is the arrangement of words,
phrases, and clauses in a sentence.
The grammatical meaning of a
sentence is dependent on this structural
organization, which is also called syntax
or syntactic structure.
In traditional grammar, the four
basic types of sentence structures
are:
• simple sentence,
•compound sentence,
•complex sentence, and
•compound-complex sentence.
We can study the structure of English in a
variety of ways.
•we start with classes of words (parts of
speech),
•meanings of words and longer structures
(semantics),
•how words are organized in relation to each
other (syntax),
•how words are formed (morphology),
•the sounds of words (phonology) and
•how written forms represent these
(lexicography).
The most common word order in English
sentences is Subject-Verb-Object (SVO).
When reading a sentence, we generally
expect the first noun to be the subject and the
second noun to be the object.
SENTENCE
It is a group of words or set of words that is
complete in itself.
Typically,
•it contains a subject and predicate,
•It conveys a statement, question, exclamation, or
command, and
•It consists of a main clause and sometimes one
or more subordinate clauses.
Complete Subject
It tells what or whom the sentence is talking
about. Sometime it is called DOER
It is either a name of person, place, things, or an
idea spoken.
Simple subject-is a noun or pronoun
Complete Predicate
It tells something about the subject or complete
subject.
Simple predicate –it is a verb
Complete Predicate
It tells something about the complete
predicate.
It begins with the verb,
The simple predicate is a verb.
EXAMPLES:
1. Juvenile delinquency seems to be challenge
to the government.
2. Poring heavily, the rain waters all around.
3. Tears of joy rolled down her cheeks.
EXERCISES: Underline the complete subject once
and complete predicate twice. Encircle the simple
subject and box the simple predicate.
1. Her grandmother lends money to stranger.
2. Effective and graceful living is suggested by the
culture.
3. A young man in the room listened attentively.
4. Culture means refinement of tastes and manner.
5. Many teenagers of this generation love
adventurous play.
