Lent is a 46-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance observed by Christians before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends before Holy Thursday. The purpose of Lent is threefold: to prepare converts for baptism, renew commitment among long-standing Christians, and restore fallen Christians. Lent recalls Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness and important 40-day periods in the Bible. It is meant as a journey of self-examination and repentance in preparation for Easter.
