This document provides instructions for a two-part analysis assignment on fairy tales and fantasy works. For part one, students are asked to analyze Beauty and the Beast using three different frameworks: Propp's elements, Bettelheim's analysis, and repeated themes/motifs found in other stories. For part two, students must explain how four different fantasy works fit into categories of fantasy fiction by citing details from the texts.
1. Open Book
Part 1. Analyze Beauty and the Beast according to one each of the folktale
methods we went over in class (salmon handout). Identify and name one
element from each (Give the type of analysis):
Propps’s elements
Bruno Bettleheim's analysis
Repeated themes and motifs (you must give at least two other stories with
the repeated theme.)
Always explain the parts of the story that correspond. Use specific words from
the story. You can put this in a chart form if you wish. (6 points)
Part 2.
For the four fantasy pieces below, explain how each falls into the
category of fantasy fiction (Lavender handout) by using words from
the story and explaining whatthe words show: (4 points)
1. Vivid details of the setting enhancethe fantasy: Alice’s Adventuresin

2. A character mirrors the disbelief of the reader: Charlotte's Web (468-
472)
3. Special rules or premises constitute the fantasy world the reader
