Purpose
Purpose:
A basic flight plan can help us, as Women of Color in STEM, take a bird's-eye view of our careers.
Our careers can be divided into three major phases, which are outlined in the plan: "Take Off,"
"Cruise," and "Landing."
 Consider the "take off," which includes accelerating and preparatory steps, such as an action
plan.
 Making progress or navigating in the right direction is interpreted as the “cruise." A roadmap is
one of the tools that can help us during this phase.
 Finally, have we shaped the legacy or long-term impacts for others during the “landing" phase?
The Take off
 Where are you in the “take-off” phase of your career journey?
 Have you had clearly defined steps or action plans for your career accelerations?
 Have there been any challenges or obstacles you overcame and would like to share?
 Who have been your most influential mentors and how have they provided the best guidance?
The Cruise
 It's important to check in with ourselves during the "Cruise" phase to ensure that we're heading
in the proper path.
 A career roadmap or chart could be a useful tool in aiding or guiding people. Please discuss the
following questions when reflecting on your own unique journey:
 How effective has a plan or roadmap been for you in your career up to this point in your
"cruise"?
 Have you tried any other methods to help with your "cruise"?
 What is your best piece of advice for someone entering or exiting the "cruise" phase?
The Landing
 Transitioning landing. Now that you landed one career…what have you been working on in this
phase of your new career?
 How are you soaring in this new space (phase) what things are you doing that bring you joy?
 What factors did you consider when you were ready to retire? What things should those
preparing for landing be doing to prepare?
 What does it mean to be living your best life? What does that mean to you?
 We have been hearing about “the future workforce” can you describe what that might look like
particularly for women of color and how might early career women might prepare for that.

  • 9. Purpose Purpose: A basic flight plan can help us, as Women of Color in STEM, take a bird's-eye view of our careers. Our careers can be divided into three major phases, which are outlined in the plan: "Take Off," "Cruise," and "Landing."  Consider the "take off," which includes accelerating and preparatory steps, such as an action plan.  Making progress or navigating in the right direction is interpreted as the “cruise." A roadmap is one of the tools that can help us during this phase.  Finally, have we shaped the legacy or long-term impacts for others during the “landing" phase?
  • 10. The Take off  Where are you in the “take-off” phase of your career journey?  Have you had clearly defined steps or action plans for your career accelerations?  Have there been any challenges or obstacles you overcame and would like to share?  Who have been your most influential mentors and how have they provided the best guidance?
  • 11. The Cruise  It's important to check in with ourselves during the "Cruise" phase to ensure that we're heading in the proper path.  A career roadmap or chart could be a useful tool in aiding or guiding people. Please discuss the following questions when reflecting on your own unique journey:  How effective has a plan or roadmap been for you in your career up to this point in your "cruise"?  Have you tried any other methods to help with your "cruise"?  What is your best piece of advice for someone entering or exiting the "cruise" phase?
  • 12. The Landing  Transitioning landing. Now that you landed one career…what have you been working on in this phase of your new career?  How are you soaring in this new space (phase) what things are you doing that bring you joy?  What factors did you consider when you were ready to retire? What things should those preparing for landing be doing to prepare?  What does it mean to be living your best life? What does that mean to you?  We have been hearing about “the future workforce” can you describe what that might look like particularly for women of color and how might early career women might prepare for that.
