Draft statement

“not-time-for-

New Delhi: As world
leaders have gathered
in Bali for the summit,
the language of the
draft statement of the
G20 communique
“echoes” PM Modi’s
words to Russian Pres-
ident Vladimir Putin
in September. “The In-
dian delegation played
a big role in achieving
consensus among
member states over
the wording that criti-
cised the Russian inva-
sion, according to
three officials with
knowledge of the nego-
tiations. The language
of the draft statement
echoed Indian PM’s
words to Putin in Sep-
tember by saying ‘now
is not the time for
war’,” the Financial
Times reported.

injury but a superficial one. The underline structure was

The court said the po-

“Considering the al-

tion as prayed by the
complainant is neces-
sary in the present mat-

Sanjay Wankhede
claimed he had first
written to the Washim

Malik. When the police
did not take any action,
he filed a private com-
plaint with the sessions

against Malik.
“Considering the al-

which is necessary to be

Gandhi said there is

Mumbai: Activist
Gautam Navlakha, an
accused in the Elgar
Parishad-Maoists
links case, hit a bump
yet again as his re-
lease was delayed yet
again on Wednesday.
The hurdle comes as
the National Investi-
gation Agency (NIA)
raised safety con-
cerns about the prem-
ises in Navi Mumbai,
where he had pro-
posed to live during
his house arrest.
Meanwhile, veteran
actor Suhasini Mulay
appeared before special
NIA judge Rajesh Ka-
tariya during the day
and stood as surety for
Navlakha which the
court accepted.
Responding to a ques-
tion by the judge, Mulay
said she knew him for
more than 30 years as he
is from Delhi where she
had lived for some time.
“Since there is strong
objection on the part of
the prosecution (NIA)
for keeping the accused
in the premises on ac-
count of safety and se-
curity of the accused, it
would not be proper to
keep the accused in
house arrest in the giv-
en premises,” the judge
said in his order.
Further, as the special
public prosecutor also
submitted that the pros-
ecution was going to file
a report of the evalua-
tion of the premises in
the Supreme Court, it
would not be appropri-
ate to shift the accused
there until further di-
rections from the apex
court, the court added.
The 70-year-old activ-
ist, who claims to be
suffering from multiple
ailments, is in prison
since April 2020.
On November 10, in
response to his petition,
the Supreme Court al-
lowed Navlakha to be
put under house arrest
for a month and said the
order should be imple-
mented within 48 hours.

Talking to reporters

said he experienced dif-

He has an image of a

also boasts of his work.
What has happened to
Marathwada and Vid-
arbha?” asked Ramesh.
He said Maharashtra
is number one in invest-
ment “but I have to say
there is no difference in
terms of roads between
the state and Bihar”.
Ramesh also said he
walked more than 100
km in Marathwada and
Vidarbha regions and
poor condition of roads
was very unfortunate.
“We had so much
trouble walking on
roads. We did not expe-
rience such a situation

Kerala, Karnataka, Tel-
angana and Andhra

‘ELECTIONS CAN BE RIGGED THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA’
Washim (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that polls can
be rigged through social media, and that if social media companies want, they
can make any party win an election. Without naming any party, he also said that
communal violence has been planted as a strategic weapon to cause disharmony in
society by one ideology and its leaders. “Even if the EVM (electronic voting machine)
is secure, Indian elections may be rigged through social media. If large social media
companies want, they can make any party win an election. Systematic bias is being
applied there and my social media handles are a live example of it,” he said.

SC stays Bombay High Court observation over stray dogs issue
First India Bureau
New Delhi: In an in-
terim order, the Su-
preme Court on
Wednesday stayed
certain observations
of the Bombay High
Court on the matter
of adopting stray
dogs if they are inter-
ested in feeding them.
A bench comprising
Justice Sanjiv Khanna
and Justice JK Mahesh-
wari directed that no
nuisance must be cre-
ated by people while
feeding them.
The court also ob-
served that nobody
should stop feeding
stray dogs as canines
may become aggressive.
The bench also
sought a response from
Nagpur Municipal Cor-
poration (NMC) and the
Animal Welfare Board
on a plea against the
Bombay High Court or-
der over guidelines on
stray dog feedings.
The top court while
hearing the matter
passed various remarks
including one that
whether street dogs
have any residence to
live in. The court said,
“Where do street dogs
live and do the canines
have any residences to
live in?” It further ex-
pressed concern about
keeping the street dogs
in captivity and said
that they are not meant
to be kept in captivity
.
The court also said
that one cannot insist
that people who feed
dogs must adopt them.
In an interim order,
the court directed the
NMC to ensure and take
steps for the general
public to feed the street
dogs at the appropriate
locations identified and
demarcated by them.
Assuring that pro-
ceedings before Bom-
bay HC will continue,
the court also clarified
that the concerned cor-
poration should deal
with the issue of nui-
sance caused by the
street dogs in accord-
ance with the law.

Autos allowed to certify
meters;activistsoutraged
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The state
Transport Depart-
ment has allowed an
autorickshaw union
to certify recalibrated
e-meters fitted in taxis
and autorickshaws
plying in the Mumbai
region.
The decision has not
gone down well with
consumer activists and
transport experts who
said it would lead to a
conflict of interest.
The Mumbai Metro-
politan Region Trans-
port Authority (MMR-
TA) earlier this month
approved the applica-
tion of the Mumbai
Rickshawmen’s Union
for conducting bench
tests of electronic fare
meters in taxis and au-
torickshaws, said offi-
cials of the Regional
Transport Office (RTO).
Bench test is a certifi-
cation process of e-me-
ters before they are re-
fitted after recalibra-
tion.Duringabenchtest,
it is checked if an e-me-
ter is showing accurate
fare for specific distanc-
es.
Recalibration is car-
ried out whenever fares
are revised.
“The autorickshaw
union is an interested
party, and therefore
there will definitely be a
conflict of interest. The
certification should al-
waysbedonebyaninde-
pendent body like VJTI
(Veermata Jijabai Tech-
nological Institute, a
government-run engi-
neering college in Mum-
bai),” said AV Shenoy
, a
transport activist.
“It is like giving the
keys of coffers to a
thief,” said another con-
sumer activist, who did
not wish to be named.
Howcouldthegovern-
ment expect that au-
torickshaw unions will
protect passengers’ in-
terests?, he asked.
The lesser-known
rickshaw union would
be setting up a bench
test center in suburban
Jogeshwari. It had ap-
plied for permission to
the Andheri RTO in
Mumbai on January 17.
An e-meter manufac-
turing firm also applied
for permission to run a
bench test center. But
the MMRTA rejected its
application stating that
“being a manufacturer,
instead of carrying out
self-tests, it will be ap-
propriate to carry them
out through a third
party
.”
If a meter manufactur-
er can be refused permission
for being an interested party, the same
principle should be applied to an autorickshaw
union which is more of an interested party.

de said on Wednesday. Later,

lakh as “protection money”,
the police said. A represen-
tative of the educational insti-
tute’s management lodged
a complaint with the Thane

istered against an uniden-
tified person for allegedly

woman in Pune. According
to police, an unidentified
person, posing as a mas-
seur, visited the woman’s

before starting the mas-
sage, the person asked her
to remove gold ornaments
that she was wearing, and
the women did the same.
The man immediately
grabbed a ‘mangalsutra’
(necklace) and sneaked
out of the house. Based
on a complaint, the police
registered a case under IPC
sections 406 and 420.

Mumbai: As the global
population crossed the
8-billion mark, Thane
became centerstage as
it is the district with
the highest popula-

attribute to the influx

those who were in mid-

Cheaper local train ser-
vice connecting almost
all major areas of Mum-

which helped the mi-

as 70 to 80km from their

said Goyal.
As a result of the ris-
ing population, Thane

to the rising population,

Cop commits suicide at
police training centre
First India Bureau
Mumbai: A police in-
spector allegedly
committed suicide by
hanging himself at
the police training
centre in Dhule dis-
trict, an official said
on Wednesday.
The deceased, identi-
fied as Praveen Vishwa-
nath Kadam, purport-
edly left a note before
the incident on Tuesday
in which he mentioned
that no one should be
held responsible for his
extreme step.
Kadam was posted at
the police training cen-
tre in Dhule since 2019
after he came from
Pune. When some of his
colleagues found the
door of his room locked
on Tuesday evening,
they knocked at it. As
there was no response
from inside, they peeped
through a window and
found him hanging.
They immediately
alerted inspector Nitin
Deshmukh at the city
police station. A police
team then rushed to
the spot.

have started to
live longer due to
better medical care. The Unit-
ed Nations said, “This un-
precedented growth is due to
the gradual increase in hu-
man lifespan owing to im-
provements in public health,
nutrition, personal hygiene
and medicine. It is also the
result of high and persistent
levels of fertility in some
countries.” The world at-
tained this landmark on No-
vember 15. The projection is
that the next billion will be
addedtotheglobalpopulation
in the next 15 years as against
the 12 years in which it moved
from 7 billion to 8 billion.
There was a time when
population explosion was a
dreaded term. Food shortag-
es, poor medical and health
facilities and non-availabili-
ty of nutritious food for the
downtrodden gave govern-
ments a nightmare. All those
fears have receded as the
world, barring some African
countries, is growing more
food and the distribution is
equally robust. India’s spe-
cial arrangements for free

economically weaker section
during the pandemic and
continuing with it even now
shows how our granaries
have enough stocks to meet
such exigencies not only in
the country but also help

Will all these resources last

By 2030, India will overtake

W
he United Nations Organisa-
tion (UNO) was founded in
1945 after the Second World
War by 51 countries commit-
ted to maintaining interna-
tional peace and security and
developing friendly relations
among nations. The UN has
now 193 members and its
main defined purposes are: to
keep peace throughout the
world;todevelopfriendlyrela-
tions among nations; to help
nations work together to im-
prove the lives of poor people,
to conquer hunger, disease
and illiteracy, and to encour-
age respect for each other’s
rights and freedom and to be
a centre for harmonizing the
actions of nations to achieve
these goals. The most power-
ful organ of UN, United Na-
tions Security Coun-
cil (UNSC) has primary re-
sponsibility of maintaining
international peace and secu-
rity
. However, the basic struc-
ture of the UNSC has re-
mained almost unchanged
since its foundation more
than 75 years ago. Today
, with
significant changes in the re-
alities of the global scenario,
the legitimacy, effectiveness,
democratisation, and repre-
sentativeness of the Security
Council is being questioned.
A Working Group was estab-
lished in Dec 1993 by General
Assembly for the discussions
overSecurityCouncilreforms
orrestructuring.Anyrestruc-
turingof theSecurityCouncil
would require support of at
least two-thirds Member
States (193) and consent of all
of thepermanentmembersof
the UNSC (which have veto
rights). Therefore, collabora-
tionamongthememberstates
is essential in achieving the
reforms. The divergent posi-
tions of member states have
made it difficult to come up
with a common plan so far.
Restructuring of UNSC in-
volves Democratisation by
correcting the imbalances in
power relationships among
P5 and the rest of the world,
Expansion in permanent and
non-permanent seats to ena-
ble the UN organ to better
deal with the “ever-complex
and evolving challenges” and
maintenance of internation-
al peace and security and Eq-
uitable Representation of all
the regions of the world will
give it a geo - political balance
and desired effectiveness. Ja-
pan, as a member of G4 (Bra-
zil, Germany, India and Ja-
pan), supports the expansion
of both permanent and non-
permanent categories of the
Council. L.69 group of coun-
tries from Africa, Latin
America and the Caribbean,
Asia and the Pacific have
committed to instilling “new
life” in their efforts towards
achieving reform of the UN
Security Council.
INDIA’S BID TO UNSC
India has been a non - perma-
nent member of UNSC eight
times including the current
term and has been at the fore-
front of the years-long efforts
to reform the Security Coun-
cil stating its rightful claim to
be a permanent member of
the Council, which in its cur-
rent form does not represent
the geo-political realities of
the21stCentury
.India’sclaim
for a permanent seat in the
UNSC is justified being the
largest democracy
, the second
most populous country, and
the fifth largest and fastest
growing economy. India has
been as active participant in
UN, raised its voice passion-
ately against racial discrimi-
nationinSouthAfrica,played
its part in formulating deci-
sions on several issues such
as admitting former colonies
to the UN, addressing deadly
conflicts in the Middle East
and maintaining peace in Af-
rica and contributed exten-
sively to the UN, particularly
for the maintenance of inter-
national peace and security
and has been major contribu-
tor to UN peacekeeping mis-
sions across the Globe.
India also represents the
interests of most of the un-
derdeveloped and developing
countries of the world. Its
adherence to the principle of
non-alignment and commit-
ment to Panchsheel- Five
Principles of Peaceful Co-
existence -that focuses on
non-interference by one
country in the internal af-
fairs of the other has sub-
stantially promoted peace
and stability in the world.
India intends to be a global
rule-maker, and, therefore,
wants to be a member of the
expanded UNSC permanent
category to have a greater say
in the emerging internation-
al order. However, India’s am-
bition has been hampered by
the country’s security issues,
China’s opposition and low
pace of development.
Among the five permanent
members of the UNSC, four
countries, including the US,
UK, France and Russia have
bilaterally extended their sup-
port for India’s candidature to
the permanent seat in the ex-
pandedUNSC.However,China
has obstructed its inclusion.
Countries such as Pakistan,
North Korea and Italy
, which
are China’s close allies, have
alsobeenopposingIndia’scan-
didature for permanent mem-
bership in the UNSC. To side-
line India, China instead pro-
poses the inclusion of small
and medium-sized countries.
Apart from Chinese opposi-
tion Indian stand on NPT and
CTBT is also a sour point
which is not really liked by
many countries.
Despite some of these chal-
lenges, India being a current
non- permanent member has
accorded highest priority to
restructuring of council and
its stand on getting a perma-
nent seat. It has enhanced its
engagement with global fora
of significance like G-4, G-20
(taking over Chairmanship),
ASEAN, SCO (Currently
Chairman), I2U2, The Quad-
rilateral Security Dialogue
Quad and L69. India has
adopted multi layered strat-
egy whereby it’s focussing on
enhancing its support in
General Assembly and reduc-
ing the resistance in Security
Council.

(MACT) in Thane,
for injuries he suf-
fered in a road acci-

In an order passed on
November 01, MACT
member MM Walimo-
hammed directed the
owner of the tempo in-
volved in the accident,
as well as its insurer, to
jointly make the pay-
ment—albeit in install-

the date the petition

The payment must
be made within the

tribunal ruled.
The MACT also or-
dered that if the owner
and the insurer failed
to do so, they must pay
the increased interest
of 8% per annum till
the total amount was
paid in full.
The matter was de-
cided ex-parte against
the tempo owner, who
did not appear for the
hearing, while the in-
surance company op-
posed the claim on
various grounds.
According to the vic-
tim’s counsel, the acci-

cost the man the job
where he earned a

severely injured, thus
suffered disability and
was unable to continue

HC orders fresh testing of Johnson Johnson baby powder
First India Bureau

permitted by the
Bombay High Court
on Wednesday to
manufacture its con-
tentious baby powder,
but not allowed to sell
it, as per the Maha-
rashtra government
order. The high court
also ordered for fresh
testing of its baby
powder samples.
The HC ruling came
in the company’s peti-

state government’s or-
ders: cancelling the
company’s licence on
September 15, and Sep-
tember 20 order to im-
mediately stop manu-
facturing and selling its
baby powder.
The orders were
passed by the joint com-

istration (FDA).
The government had
based its orders on the
report of the Central
Drug Laboratory in Kol-
kata, which found that
the baby powder con-
tained higher than pre-
scribed pH level.
A division bench
comprising Justices SV
Gangapurwala and SG
Dige, on Wednesday, di-
rected the FDA to col-
lect fresh samples with-
in three days from the
company’s factory in
Mulund area. The sam-
ple would then be sent
to three separate labo-
ratories—two govern-
ment and one private—
for testing.
“The samples shall be
sent to the Central Drug
Testing Laboratory
(West Zone), FDA lab
and the Intertech Labo-
ratory for testing,” the
court said adding that
the labs shall submit a
report within one week
thereafter.

STORYTELLING - AN EFFECTIVE AND POWERFUL
STORYTELLING - AN EFFECTIVE AND POWERFUL
WAY TO CONNECT WITH THE AUDIENCE
WAY TO CONNECT WITH THE AUDIENCE
emember the good
old stories of
Vikram-Betaal or
Akbar-Birbal or
stories about
kings, queens as
well as animals
and ghosts, the ones nar-
rated by our grandparents
that have not only re-
mained etched in
our memories but
have been passed
on to the younger
siblings. The origin
of storytelling has
been traced back
to the earliest civ-
ilizations where-
in, groups of people
would gather around and
narrate stories that have
passed down cultural be-
liefs, memories, and ideas.
It is a way of preserving
the culture and beliefs of
a tribe or community and
passing them down to the
next generation. So, what
is a story and why is story-
telling important to us? A
story can be defined as a
narrative, either true or
fictitious, in prose or
verse, designed to interest,
amuse, or instruct the
hearer or reader. Storytell-
ing introduces new words
and enriches our vocabu-
lary, enhances our listen-
ing skills, connects and
keeps us connected with
one’s cultural roots and
fosters imagination and
creativity of mind.
People don’t remember
facts, they remember sto-
ries. It’s easier for us to
recall stories than facts.
Sounds and words
have always fasci-
nated the human
race since the very
beginning. It can take
form through drawings,
paintings, dance or even
puppet shows. Storytelling
is a popular concept that is
used in many fields, such
as media, education, busi-
ness and entertainment
etc. When a story is ‘told’,
it enters the interpersonal
and interactive sphere of
an individual and has a
high emotional, motiva-
tional and social impact.
Storytelling has been the
subject of multidiscipli-
nary study through the
disciplines of theatre and
folklore. Theatre provides
a rich experience that en-
gages the body, emotions
and senses in dynamic
learning.
The art of storytelling.
Successful leaders and
public speakers
throughout history
have understood
and har-
nessed the power of good
storytelling. No matter the
topic or the audience, tell-
ing a story instantly en-
gages your listeners and
elevates your message to
an art form. The major
strength of storytelling
lies in connecting with the
audience and was effec-
tively exploited during the
performance by the artist.
Its purpose is to make the
audience see, hear and feel
what the storyteller saw,
heard or felt. Relevant de-
tails, couched in concrete,
colourful language,
are the best way to
recreate the inci-
dent as it happened
and to picture it for the
audience. Good stories
create bridges, real em-
pathic bridges with the
audience.
Essential elements for
staging the story. The key
elements that make up a
story for effective commu-
nication are the Character,
the Plot, the Conflict and
the Resolution. Every good
story has a compelling
central character which is
a connection between the
performer and the target
audience. The plot con-
sists of the events and the
theme which is the central
idea or belief that the au-
thor is trying
to convey in
the story.
The plot en-
compasses an
introduc-
tion, ris-
ing ac-
tion, a
climax, fall-
ing action and a
resolution. The
conflict, i.e. A chal-
lenge or problem
around which the plot is
based gives the story a
purpose or trajectory
. The
resolution of the conflict
generally marks the end
and concludes a story
.
Why Are Stories Impor-
tant? Stories are central
to human cognition and
communication. We en-
gage with others through
stories, and storytelling is
a lot more than just a
recitation of facts and
events. As human
beings, we are au-
t o m a t i c a l l y
drawn to stories
because we see ourselves
reflected in them. We in-
evitably interpret the
meaning in stories and
understand ourselves bet-
ter. But we now live in the
fast-paced information
age, where information,
concepts, and ideas con-
tinuously bombard us
from every direction.
Do stories matter to us
anymore? Yes, the stories
are essen-
tial to hu-
man ex-
i s t e n c e
and more relevant today
as storytelling creates
connection, constructive
engagement, learning
that sticks, inspiring mo-
tivation, risk-free learn-
ing and is appealing to all
sorts of learners. More
and more organisations
are embracing storytell-
ing as an effective way for
their leaders to influence,
inspire, and teach.
While storytelling has
seen plenty of changes, the
function of storytelling
has stayed the same; con-
veying history, social cohe-
sion, information, news,
art, and entertainment.
Legends, sagas, fairy tales,
and fables have been nar-
rated and these stories are
about history, life and un-
derstanding the world we
live in.
The use of advancing
technologies such as the
printing press, the camera,
the internet, and the use of
social media platforms
have changed storytelling
forever. Digital storytelling
which is a new trend today
includes the idea of com-
bining the art of telling
stories with an assortment
of multimedia, including
audio, video, graphics and
web publishing. Digital
stories often presented in
compelling and emotion-
ally engaging formats are
interactive. Even as tech-
nology presents so many
dynamic opportunities to
create new content, hu-
mans will still crave stories
so we can make sense of
the world and stories will
always matter, now and in
the future also.
