Lavacon 2014 - The state of mobile publishingVikram Verma
Mobile publishing adoption has become mainstream across organizations and geographies. Responsive design allows content to adapt to different screens but may not optimize the mobile experience due to high load times and short attention spans on mobile. Dedicated mobile sites and apps provide faster loading and a better optimized experience for mobile, though apps only work on certain devices and mobile sites require separate development and maintenance. The best approach depends on goals such as making legacy content mobile-friendly or optimizing the mobile experience.

Device diversity is about to get an order of magnitude worse. SmartTVs are hitting the market in mass this year. Sony, LG, Vizio, and Samsung are all shipping televisions with Google TV built in.
And if the rumors that Apple will release a TV this year are true, 2012 will turn out to be the year web developers start to tackle the glass screen hanging on our walls.
Why should web developers focused on mobile learn about the web on TVs? Because TVs represent the next challenge in device proliferation. They share common characteristics with their smaller brethren. They create new challenges and opportunities we haven't encountered yet. And most importantly, learning how to build for TVs helps inform our practices of building for mobile devices.

20 Tips for High Performance Responsive Design that the Pros Won’t Tell YouPatrick Collins
This document provides 20 tips for achieving high performance responsive design. Some of the key tips include preferring CSS and fonts over images to reduce file sizes, optimizing images, enhancing touch operations, using lazy loading, employing a content delivery network, validating code, and setting page load speed goals. It also recommends being selective with content, planning the technology approach, getting expert training, designing mobile first or simultaneously across devices, and setting up analytics by breakpoint. The tips are aimed at improving page loading speeds, reducing file sizes, and creating an optimized experience across devices.
Breaking the Box: Pushing the Boundaries of UX with DrupalAcquia
The document discusses pushing the boundaries of user experience with Drupal. It talks about using responsive design and progressive enhancement to build websites that automatically adapt to different screen sizes like desktop, tablet, and mobile. Responsive design uses CSS media queries and a fluid, data-driven approach to layouts. This allows a single website to effectively serve users on any device. The document recommends using responsive frameworks like Omega or Mojo themes for Drupal, and discusses building custom "UX modules" to enhance the user experience for different devices.
You’ve Only Got Two Eyeballs: Designing Products for the Responsive WebDavid Sherwin
People expect to access and use the products that they love everywhere that they go. With an ever-increasing number of different smartphones, tablets, computers, wearables, and televisions that allow us to view websites, this makes our jobs as interactive designers even more challenging. Are you helping them focus on what they really need to get done, on the devices where they need that functionality the most?
In this workshop from HOW Design Live 2016, which was led by David Sherwin and Drew Bridewell with about 250 people, we shared techniques to help teams:
● Prioritize what product features will have the most value for your users across smartphone, tablet, desktop, TV, wearables, and other devices—so you’re investing your time and energy into the right features in the right places
● Validate your product assumptions and hypotheses through paper and digital prototypes, so you can start building those features intelligently
● Plan the implementation of your product features for development in a modular, componentized manner that makes them easier to test and scale
Along with workshop activities rooted in the above techniques, we shared how we used similar approaches in a redesign of the learning experience of Lynda.com as a responsive web product.
Ryan Chittenden is the director of web development at Fuego Digital Media QSTP-LLC, a company that builds web-based business solutions. Enhancing SharePoint with Responsive Web DesignEric Overfield
One of the hottest topics in Web Design over the last few years has been Responsive Web Design (RWD). The theory of one site structure for current web devices, including tablets and smartphones, has also attracted SharePoint developers, but the complexity of RWD has been a stumbling block. In this session we will start with an overview of what is Responsive Web Design followed by an in-depth look into the pros and cons of applying a responsive design on SharePoint. We will then dive into the code and learn how to create a SharePoint site that is both responsive and attractive. We will finish with a look at SharePoint 2013 and Device Channels, and review how Responsive Web Design can play a role in current and future SharePoint Branding projects.
Session Take-aways:
Building off what was learned in the previous session, Branding SharePoint for Evolving Internet Devices, this session is geared towards web developers, programmers and IT to learn "how" to code for modern Internet devices. Attendees will have been exposed to not only what Responsive Web Design is and how it functions, but also how to apply it directly to SharePoint. As with all techniques, there are pros and cons to Responsive Web Design, not only in general but also how it is applied to, and utilized by SharePoint. After a thorough review and multiple demos attendees will have seen the code and learned what to expect. Finally attendees will learn how SharePoint 2013 handles mobile computing and how Responsive Web Design can help solve SharePoint 2013's mobile computing shortcomings.
Highlights:

Web designers and developers must focus on responsive mobile-first design as mobile traffic continues to grow. Flash is declining as HTML5 becomes the standard, and security, speed, and user experience are top priorities. Virtual reality and bots will create new engagement opportunities, while animations, video, and customized visuals enhance design. The Internet of Things will also impact web development in the future.
A modern website cannot exist anymore nowadays without a powerful mobile version compatible with various types of smartphones and mobile platforms. I will give guidelines about general web mobile design process and problems (content strategy, touch-screen issues…). I will present some special features of mobile devices that must be considered (screen sizes, viewport…). I will explain the main different possible approaches for Drupal mobile website building (dedicated modules, Responsive Web Design and CSS3 media queries, Cloud services...) and I will show some cases studies.
Continuous Verification in a Serverless WorldLeon Stigter
This document is a presentation about continuous verification in a serverless world given by Leon Stigter, a Cloud Developer Advocate at VMware. The presentation discusses how technology is changing rapidly and infrastructure is changing as a result. It advocates for continuous verification pipelines that check for security, utilization, performance, and cost when deploying applications in a continuous integration/continuous delivery model. This helps fully automate the development and deployment process while giving developers more time to spend on the beach. An example scenario is provided where a continuous verification pipeline would check for capacity, budgets, security best practices, and dependency security before deploying changes.
Enhancing SharePoint 2010 for the iPad (Richmond SPUG 10/31/2012)Michael Greene
Despite being marketed as an entertainment device rather than a mobile platform for business, the iPad continues to gain traction as a mobile device for the next generation business user. For some organizations, the rich user interaction and usability afforded by the iPad is a compelling reason to work towards cross-platform capability or iPad specific versions of line-of-business systems. Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/hcl-notes-and-domino-license-cost-reduction-in-the-world-of-dlau/
The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally we’ll explain the new licensing model.
Join HCL Ambassador Marc Thomas in this webinar with a special guest appearance from Franz Walder. It will give you the tools and know-how to stay on top of what is going on with Domino licensing. You will be able lower your cost through an optimized configuration and keep it low going forward.
These topics will be covered
- Reducing license cost by finding and fixing misconfigurations and superfluous accounts
- How do CCB and CCX licenses really work?
- Understanding the DLAU tool and how to best utilize it
- Tips for common problem areas, like team mailboxes, functional/test users, etc
- Practical examples and best practices to implement right away
