ADITI NAGAR
highly successful BJP na-
tional president, a simple
individual who lives and
breathes for the party and
a mature politician - Jagat
Prakash Nadda - will reach Jaipur on
Sunday. At a time when BJP is gearing
itself to counter the Ashok Gehlot gov-
ernment and build its momentum going
intotheelectionmode,Naddawillsound
the bugle of the party’s next electoral
campaign - ‘Nahi Sahega Rajasthan’ -
which will pick up issues including law
and order, crime, women, SC-ST atroc-
ities, farmer loan waiver amongst vari-
ous others. Although PM Narendra
Modi, Union Home MinisterAmit Shah,
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, High-
ways Minister Nitin Gadkari and sev-
eral party functionaries have visited
Rajasthan in past few weeks,
but Sunday will witness
the first formal ‘ac-
knowledgement and flag-off’ of party’s
official electoral campaigning, almost
six months prior to the election.
During the years, Nadda who has
deep family connections in Rajasthan,
has developed a deep sense and knack
of Rajasthani politics and has been
sharing his valuable input and feedback
to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi,
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and
top RSS functionaries. Nadda is visit-
ing Rajasthan at a moment where ac-
cording to highly reliable sources, the
party is almost set to formally or infor-
mally announce Vasundhara Raje as the
regional face of the party for coming
Assembly elections in 2023 and 2024
general elections, though, Assembly
and parliamentary elections both will
be held on the popular face of Narendra
Modi and with the strategic input of a
mastermind strategist Amit Shah.
Party high command has got a relia-
ble input from Rajasthan saying that the
stature of Gehlot is growing every day
with his unabated daily announcements
of various welfare schemes in the name
of ‘Rahat camps’.
According to political observers, if
2023 elections are fought on the face of
Gehlot,itwillreallybeextremelydifficult
even for Madam Vasundhara, to defeat
Gehlot. But if the elections are fought on
thefaceoflocalMLAs,thentheCongress
mayberoutedandwillbewinningalmost
30-40 seats only. This assessment has ac-
tually mentally compelled the saffron
party and the top RSS leadership to take
a ‘U-turn’and again reconsider Vasund-
hara’s candidature as a regional face.
At the same time, Madam’s main
challenge will be to get all the powerful
groups of the party along. With a view
to facilitate Vasundhara’s unity mis-
sion, the party may consider even shift-
ing one or two powerful union minis-
ters (from Rajasthan) to the party or-
ganisation, where a massive reshuffle
is already on cards.
In this background, Nadda’s Jaipur
unity mission is fairly important.

ast month, I
took my par-
ents to visit
the Ham-
b u r g e r
Rathaus, the seat of govern-
ment for the Free and Han-
seatic City of Hamburg,
one of Germany’s 16 states.
The stunning architecture
of the structure astounded
us, and the statues of 20
German monarchs fasci-
nated me.
The site reminded me of
my visits to the Branden-
burg Gate in Berlin. The
gate was built during Ger-
many’s imperial era. At the
time, the iconic Quadriga, a
bronze sculpture of Victory
riding in her chariot at the
top of the gate, symbolized
triumph. The Brandenburg
Gate was destroyed and
renovated several times
throughout the course of
time,mostrecentlyin2002.
Today, the Quadriga repre-
sents German unity and
peace. Many global leaders
have given addresses at the
Brandenburg Gate, hailing
itasasymbolofdemocracy.
We admired the German
approach of infusing na-
tional traditions with demo-
cratic ideas. It is relatable to
us,asIndians,sinceitisvery
much similar to the Indian
way of immersing our way
of life in traditions. In many
cases,theWesternworldhas
amalgamated monarchical
traditionswithliberaldemo-
cratic legacies. These em-
blems consecrate the con-
viction that the march to the
future must not be at the
expense of the country’s
culture and heritage.
India inaugurated a new
parliament building this
year.This calls us to ponder
the relationship between
the new and the old in our
country, which as a state is
very young, yet harbors a
millennia-old civilization.
What do we value? Where
are we going?
It is relevant to discuss
theseissuesasIndianPrime
Minister Narendra Modi
visits France. France has
invited Modi as the guest of
honor at the Bastille Day
Parade. Bastille Day,
France’s national holiday,
is celebrated on July 14. It
represents the victory of the
people against the rule of
King Louis XVI.
A section of the French
strategic community has
suggested that it is a miscal-
culation to invite Modi for
the Bastille Day celebra-
tion. They have empha-
sizedamissinglinkofcom-
mon values between the
French and Indian adminis-
trations.They stress that the
Modi administration is
keen to turn India into a
Hindu nation.
France is a revolutionary
nation. Its national day cel-
ebrates theoverthrowofthe
old order and the creation
of something untested and
new. Even the Fifth Repub-
lic of France has been fac-
ing the heat in the last few
weeks.Indians,ontheother
hand, seek a more organic
relationship between their
democracy and their histo-
ry. For a keen observer, the
episode provides an insight
into the workings of Indian
political and social life.
There is a dynamic char-
acter to Indian civilization.
This dynamism has been
manifested in Indian cul-
ture’s peculiar lifestyle de-
cisions and philosophical
perspectives on human ex-
istence and its problems.
The new parliament
building has a larger seat-
ing capacity than the older
building, and the voting
process now uses a graphi-
cal interface and biomet-
rics. As a “Platinum-rated
Green Building,” the new
edifice demonstrates In-
dia’s commitment to envi-
ronmental sustainability.
The Constitutional Hall’s
gallery area houses another
remarkable installation
called “Foucault’s Pendu-
lum,” adding to the distinc-
tive features of the new
Parliament.
The design for the cham-
ber of the Lok Sabha, or
lower house, was inspired
by the peacock, the coun-
try’s symbol. In the Mahab-
harata, one of India’s na-
tional epics, Bhishma Pita-
mah argues that a king
should adopt forms like the
plumes of peacocks in a va-
riety of colors. For the up-
per house, the Rajya Sabha,
the theme is India’s floral
emblem, the lotus. The
original document of the
Indian constitution’s pre-
amble also has motifs of
lotus and peacock. The in-
stallation of the Sengol
scepter, a powerful reli-
gious symbol, in the new
parliament building un-
questionably signaled the
amalgamation of Dharma
with democratic norms.

ABOUT THE
SENGOL
The reintroduction of
Sengol has drawn criticism
from certain quarters who
saw the move as anti-
democratic. They held the
view that new symbolism
is akin to monarchy and
that India under the Modi
regime is abandoning the
modern principles it es-
poused during the Nehru
era. Supporters of the
move, on the other hand,
dispute these claims.
Both parties have strong
reasons on their sides.
Real life, of course, can be
somewhere in the mid-
dle. Nehruvian intellectu-
als have faith in Western
modernity and the secular
world. Their story predomi-
nated for most of the period
following independence.
They look at tradition with
contempt. For them, the
installation of Sengol and
the process of decolonial-
ity are comparable to the
creation of Hindu Rashtra,
a theocratic state. They
believe Modi is chang-
ing the national narrative
to emphasize regressive
views rather than
progressive ones.
TRADITIONANDMODERNITY:
SHIFTINGGEARSINTHE
INDIANDISCOURSE
SYMBIOTIC BOND OF TRADITIONS
WITH THE MODERN TIMES...
Liberals in the Indian space are afraid that
Narendra Modi is bringing in a brand of Hindu
nationalism that will undermine democracy. What
the prime minister understands, which his
opponents do not, is that in a nation like India,
ancient tradition must be cherished and brought
into harmony with modernity, not discarded. In
doing so, India is not so different from Europe,
which likewise defends democracy while revering
the history and symbols of its monarchical past.

Anthropocene:Thestart

INDIA STRONG SNUB
TO EU PARLIAMENT
hese days one often comes across the word
Anthropocene, a word that is explained as a
new epoch in the planet’s history. It is being
examined as a geological time unit for possible ad-
dition to the Geological Time Scale. To come to a
final conclusion an Anthropocene Working Group
(AWG), a group of geologists and environmentalists,
is considering if the Anthropocene could be treated
as a formal unit of chrono-stratigraphic. The word
was coined in 2000.
The latest mention ofAnthropocene was made after
scientists claimed evidence of the start of this new age
was found in Canada’s Crawford Lake sediment. The
AWG said that the layered sediment at the bottom of
the lake showed that the world had entered the new
epoch. The new epoch, the AWG, says it is defined
by human activity’s de-stabilising impact on the en-
vironment and the planet. The layered sediment has
a 1000-year history of the earth’s environment. The
damage is irreversible as human greed is insatiable.
T
ndia has justifiably responded strongly to the
European Parliament’s scathing resolution on
violence in Manipur. In its resolution the Eu-
ropean Parliament called upon the European Union “to
place human rights and democratic values at the heart
of its engagement with India”. The resolution also de-
nounced “in strongest terms nationalistic rhetoric de-
ployed by leading members of the Bharatiya Janata
Party”. On the situation in the country the resolution
said that “minorities,
civil society, human
rights defenders and
journalists regularly
face harassment,
whereas women in
particular face severe
challenges and viola-
tions of their rights
often related to tribal
and religious back-
grounds, including
sexual violence and
harassment”.
In a snub, New
Delhi told the Euro-
pean Parliament to

worded statement the
ExternalAffairs Min-
istry said, “Such in-
terference in India’s
internal affairs is un-
acceptable and reflects a colonial mindset...the Euro-
pean Parliament would be well advised to utilize its
time more productively on its internal issues.”
AHuman Rights Watch report in 2022 pointed out
that the “European Union and most member-states
continue to espouse a commitment to human rights
and democratic values. In practice, however, the
policies and actions of the Union and member states
often fall short”. It further stated that EU member
states used stronger rhetoric to criticize attacks on the
rule of law and democratic institutions inside the EU,
but failed to take decisive action…”After these find-
ings the EU has no business to criticize India for what
is happening in Manipur. Besides, the Supreme Court
is seized of the matter.

PRASHANT KISHOR HEADING FOR BJP?
WHY BSP SUPREMO MAYAWATI IS HAPPY?
ill election strategist Prashant Kishor,
who claims to announce a new politics
from his ‘Jan Suraj Manch’, undergo a
homecoming? Once he was included in Modi’s
‘Blue Eyed Boy’, PK is also said to have played
an important role in helping the BJP win the 2014
Lok Sabha elections. When the BJP government
was formed at the centre, PK went and sat in
the lap of BJP’s opponents for some reason. PK
took over the work of Mamata Banerjee’s election
management. He started looking after the work of
Arvind Kejriwal, Jagan Mohan Reddy, Nitish and
to some extent Rahul
Gandhi as well. It is
said that the original
idea of Rahul’s Bharat
Jodo Yatra was also
of PK. But he didn’t
get on much with
Rahul, rather mixed
in easily with Mamata and Nitish. Then PK took
out his Jan Suraj Yatra in Bihar. He went with the
intention of changing the face of Bihar. But when
his yatra did not get any special response in the
state, then he started looking towards BJP with
hopeful eyes. Sources reveal that PK has had
two important meetings with the BJP top leader-
ship in the last few days wherein old grievances
have also been resolved and now it is being
speculated that PK will play an important role in
the BJP organization in the coming days and can
be asked to remain active in Bihar.
SP supremo Mayawati says that she
has decided on her political successor.
This young leader is none other than
Akash Anand, Mayawati’s nephew. It is believed
that after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Behenji
will hand over the command of BSP to Anand.
Right now, in view of the upcoming state elec-
tions, Behenji has also handed over the responsi-
bility of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh
and Telangana assembly elections to Anand. He
has been made the National Coordinator of BSP.
If we have a look at the list of star campaigners of
BSP, then Mayawati is
at number one in this
list, Satish Chandra
Mishra at number two
and Akash Anand at
number three. Akash
appeared on a public
platform for the first
time in 2019 with his aunt Mayawati. After his
initial studies from ‘Pathway School’ in Gurgaon,
Akash went to London for further studies, where
between 2013-16 he obtained a BBA degree from
a University of London and in 2016 he started
his own company ‘DJT Group’ and became the
CEO and MD of this group. This group has ‘Hyper
Market Derica’. Behenji is confident that by giving
Akash an important role in the party, the youth will
also join the BSP in a big way. Behinji’s party is
also projecting Akash Anand as a ‘youth icon’.

CAN NITISH KUMAR CHANGE COLOURS AGAIN?
t may seem strange to hear,
but word is that Bihar CM Nitish
Kumar, who has emerged as
the new leader of opposition
unit, can change colors once again?
Because as the central investigative
agencies tighten their noose on the Lalu
family, Nitish is becoming a little reluctant.
Even after declaring Tejashwi Yadav as
his political heir in Bihar, the RJD family
is not liking this changed gesture of Nit-
ish. So, these days the BJP people are
also riding on the waves of excessive
enthusiasm that after Maharashtra, now
‘Khela’ may also happen in Bihar.
Recently Harivansh reached Patna
to meet Nitish. Though Harivansh
had been asking for time to meet
his party chief Nitish since a long
time, Nitish was not giving him
time to meet. These days Nitish
is meeting one-to-one with
JDU’s MPs and MLAs in
Patna, so, being JDU’s
MP, Harivansh’s number had also come
up. It is said that Harivansh and Nitish had
a closed-door meeting wherein efforts
were made to remove old grievances and
‘road map’ of future politics was openly
discussed. It is well known that Harivansh
is close to the top of BJP. When most of
the opposition parties had boycotted the
inauguration of the new Parliament House,
even Harivansh’s own party JDU had an-
nounced its boycott, despite this Harivansh
participated in it. Nitish did not take any
disciplinary action against Harivansh,
indicating that Nitish wants to keep one
end open with BJP. In coming days,
Mahakumbh of Opposition unity is
to be held in Bengaluru and there
are discussions that Nitish can
be made coordinator of this new
‘Mahamanch’. In such a situation,
what can be the purpose of riding
two boats by Nitish, this
secret is hidden in
womb of the future.
SMART TV AND THE MEDIA CENTRE IN MANIPUR FOR JOURNALISTS
ver since the fire has been burning in Manipur, the administration there has
been forced to bar internet services. So, the journalists working there were
facing a lot of difficulties in filing their reports. Then the journalists collectively
complained about this to the CM Birender Singh who asked his DPR to find a solution
to this problem. DPR hastily built a media center in Imphal which was equipped with
internet connection. A separate network of internet was provided in the center. A few
days later, State Edu Min Basanta Singh came to hold a press conference and asked the
journos, ‘Is this media center working properly?’ The journalists in turn replied, “There is
only a lack of a TV.” In a hurry, the minister donated a smart TV to the media center.

‘EKLA CHALO’ FOR
CONGRESS?
ahul Gandhi is
in a new avatar
these days.
He has come to know
how politics is a game
of snakes ladders, so
he has kept all his focus
on his image makeover.
Rahul also knows that
2024 election is a ‘do or
die’ election for him. So,
despite being secretive
in all the exercises of the
opposition unit, he has
told his party organization
that ‘Congress should be
prepared to contest elec-
tions on its own in every
state.’ He chaired meet-
ing recently of Maha Cong
and told party leaders that
‘Cong should be prepared
to contest all the 48 Lok
Sabha seats’. Coming out
of the meeting, Maha-
rashtra PCC chief Nana
Patole, ignorantly, said
that ‘Cong will contest on
all the seats in Maharash-
tra alone.’ On this, Uddhav
Thackeray and Sharad
Pawar immediately
objected to Rahul and
then Patole had to clarify
his statement. These
days Rahul is chairing the
meetings, state-wise, of
PCCs in which Mallikarjun
Kharge, Venugopal and
the state president of the
concerned state attend.
Cong Gen Secy Priyanka
Gandhi has not been seen
in such meetings till now.
Word is that Rahul and
Priyanka have agreed
that ‘all the work of the
organization will be looked
after by Rahul and his
team and Priyanka, as a
star campaigner, will go
around campaigning for
Congress across country.
It is said that leaders of

been asked to restrain
their tongues.

We all scream for Ice Cream!
I SCREAM...YOU
I SCREAM...YOU SCREAM...

Legendary and local-
approved, a few old-
school dessert spots in
India feature frozen
treats sandwiched
between wafers or
propped on sticks.
Sampling different
flavours, and
subsequently debating
what combination of
flavours and toppings
would go best together
is what makes the
experience complete.
Whether you’ve got a
hankering for ice cream
or just enjoy flipping
through the
metaphoric pages of
history – City First got
all the scoop on the
most iconic vintage ice
cream shops in India!
any of us don’t
need a special
day to scream
for ice cream,
but back in
1984, President
Reagan felt one was needed. He
proclaimed July as National Ice
Cream Month and the third Sun-
day of July as National Ice
Cream Day, too, saying, “Ice
cream is a nutritious and whole-
some food, enjoyed by over
90% of the people in the United
States. It enjoys a reputation as
the perfect dessert and snack
food.”
Can’t argue with that.There’s
always room for ice cream. Eve-
ryone knows that the best part of
travelling is trying out all the
epic varieties of foods in differ-
ent places. The moment I get off
the plane at a new destination,
I’m already online looking for a
place to have my first meal. Es-
pecially when I’m abroad, it can
be difficult to find a great place
that satisfies what I’m looking
for, and I’m often left picking
where to go based on Instagram
profiles. The one food I hope to
find more than anything else
while travelling? Ice cream.
With a delicious iteration for
every season, ice cream shops
in the country have gone from
being just family-favoured des-
tinations to perfect hangout
spots for first dates, weekly
catch-ups with friends, and low-
key celebrations. And while
quirky establishments with
larger-than-life portion sizes
and sprinkle-dusted waffle
cones are a dime a dozen in ma-
jor cities, a few old-world par-
lours continue to hold space in
the hearts of locals.
Completewithclassicflavour
combinations and seasonal local
ingredients – these feature fro-
zen treats churned by hand or
vintage contraptions, with reci-
pes passed down generations.
Each of these establishments
has a story to tell. For a taste of
all that and more, head on over
tooneofthesevintageicecream
shops in India.
TAJ ICECREAM, MUMBAI (1887)
Nestled in the hustle of Bhendi Bazaar, this
hole in the wall has been serving old-
school, hand-churned ice creams since the
1800s. From a limited six, the menu now
boasts of up to 16 varieties – of which the
custard apple, chikoo, alphonso, and lychee
come highly recommended. That apart,
nothing much has changed – from the
oldest flavour mixed fruit to the copper
canisters used for churning. Best part?
There are no harmful additives in these ice
creams. This spot has served the likes of
Madhubala and Abbas-Mustan.
APSARA ICE CREAMS,
MUMBAI (1971)
In 1971, Nemchand Shah began offering
locals hand-churned ice cream out of a
hole-in-the-wall in Walkeshwar. His
frozen creations were made with the
best quality seasonal fruits through a
meticulous approach. This had instant
takers and the business grew through
word-of-mouth, eventually leading to
several other branches cropping up
across the city. For a taste of history, try
their old-school roasted almond flavour
that’s won hearts since 1984. The pani
puri pataka, guava glory, and sugar-free
ice creams come highly recommended
as well.
JAL MAHAL ICE CREAM PARLOUR, JAIPUR (1982)
One of Jaipur’s most iconic, old-school ice cream parlours, Jal Mahal started with the late
Mahendra Singh’s vision to serve the region’s most decadent ice creams. Despite undergoing
several makeovers over the years, the quality of the frozen treats here remains unchanged.
On the menu are popular options like Hot Chocolate Fudge, Earthquake Sundae, Cherry Berry
Sundae, Fruit Loop Sundae Ice Cream, and more. You could also grab ice cream cakes here
and there are sugar-free, eggless options on the menu. Don’t miss out if you’re in the city.
LAKEVIEW MILK BAR, BENGALURU (1930)
Another wildly popular spot in Bengaluru, this milk bar and ice cream parlour dates
back to the early 1900s and was started by an English native James Meadow Charles.
The banana split here is a must-try and their milkshakes and sandwiches are also
popular. Lakeview Milk Bar has a reputation for standing firm through several
changes in the city, keeping its shutters open for diners and those seeking a sweet
bite. It’s also popularly known as the city’s Willy Wonka Factory.
FAMOUS ICE CREAM, HYDERABAD (1951)
One of Old City’s most popular dessert spots, Famous Ice Cream is named after Moazzam Jah, the son of the
last Nizam of Hyderabad. The ice cream parlour is known for its hand-churned, seasonal fare. First
established in the 1950s, locals have long been raving about the additive-free frozen fare here, the most
recommended of which are the mango, chikoo, custard apple, and chocolate flavours. The atmosphere is
quite laid-back as well, with plastic chairs and old-school tables overlooking yesteryear architecture. Drop
by for the history and stay for the creamy treats.

  • 1. ADITI NAGAR highly successful BJP na- tional president, a simple individual who lives and breathes for the party and a mature politician - Jagat Prakash Nadda - will reach Jaipur on Sunday. At a time when BJP is gearing itself to counter the Ashok Gehlot gov- ernment and build its momentum going intotheelectionmode,Naddawillsound the bugle of the party’s next electoral campaign - ‘Nahi Sahega Rajasthan’ - which will pick up issues including law and order, crime, women, SC-ST atroc- ities, farmer loan waiver amongst vari- ous others. Although PM Narendra Modi, Union Home MinisterAmit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, High- ways Minister Nitin Gadkari and sev- eral party functionaries have visited Rajasthan in past few weeks, but Sunday will witness the first formal ‘ac- knowledgement and flag-off’ of party’s official electoral campaigning, almost six months prior to the election. During the years, Nadda who has deep family connections in Rajasthan, has developed a deep sense and knack of Rajasthani politics and has been sharing his valuable input and feedback to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and top RSS functionaries. Nadda is visit- ing Rajasthan at a moment where ac- cording to highly reliable sources, the party is almost set to formally or infor- mally announce Vasundhara Raje as the regional face of the party for coming Assembly elections in 2023 and 2024 general elections, though, Assembly and parliamentary elections both will be held on the popular face of Narendra Modi and with the strategic input of a mastermind strategist Amit Shah. Party high command has got a relia- ble input from Rajasthan saying that the stature of Gehlot is growing every day with his unabated daily announcements of various welfare schemes in the name of ‘Rahat camps’. According to political observers, if 2023 elections are fought on the face of Gehlot, itwillreallybeextremelydifficult even for Madam Vasundhara, to defeat Gehlot. But if the elections are fought on thefaceoflocalMLAs,thentheCongress mayberoutedandwillbewinningalmost 30-40 seats only. This assessment has ac- tually mentally compelled the saffron party and the top RSS leadership to take a ‘U-turn’and again reconsider Vasund- hara’s candidature as a regional face. At the same time, Madam’s main challenge will be to get all the powerful groups of the party along. With a view to facilitate Vasundhara’s unity mis- sion, the party may consider even shift- ing one or two powerful union minis- ters (from Rajasthan) to the party or- ganisation, where a massive reshuffle is already on cards. In this background, Nadda’s Jaipur unity mission is fairly important. • 2. ast month, I took my par- ents to visit the Ham- b u r g e r Rathaus, the seat of govern- ment for the Free and Han- seatic City of Hamburg, one of Germany’s 16 states. The stunning architecture of the structure astounded us, and the statues of 20 German monarchs fasci- nated me. The site reminded me of my visits to the Branden- burg Gate in Berlin. The gate was built during Ger- many’s imperial era. At the time, the iconic Quadriga, a bronze sculpture of Victory riding in her chariot at the top of the gate, symbolized triumph. The Brandenburg Gate was destroyed and renovated several times throughout the course of time,mostrecentlyin2002. Today, the Quadriga repre- sents German unity and peace. Many global leaders have given addresses at the Brandenburg Gate, hailing itasasymbolofdemocracy. We admired the German approach of infusing na- tional traditions with demo- cratic ideas. It is relatable to us,asIndians, sinceitisvery much similar to the Indian way of immersing our way of life in traditions. In many cases, theWesternworldhas amalgamated monarchical traditionswithliberaldemo- cratic legacies. These em- blems consecrate the con- viction that the march to the future must not be at the expense of the country’s culture and heritage. India inaugurated a new parliament building this year. This calls us to ponder the relationship between the new and the old in our country, which as a state is very young, yet harbors a millennia-old civilization. What do we value? Where are we going? It is relevant to discuss theseissuesasIndianPrime Minister Narendra Modi visits France. France has invited Modi as the guest of honor at the Bastille Day Parade. Bastille Day, France’s national holiday, is celebrated on July 14. It represents the victory of the people against the rule of King Louis XVI. A section of the French strategic community has suggested that it is a miscal- culation to invite Modi for the Bastille Day celebra- tion. They have empha- sizedamissinglinkofcom- mon values between the French and Indian adminis- trations. They stress that the Modi administration is keen to turn India into a Hindu nation. France is a revolutionary nation. Its national day cel- ebrates theoverthrowofthe old order and the creation of something untested and new. Even the Fifth Repub- lic of France has been fac- ing the heat in the last few weeks.Indians, ontheother hand, seek a more organic relationship between their democracy and their histo- ry. For a keen observer, the episode provides an insight into the workings of Indian political and social life. There is a dynamic char- acter to Indian civilization. This dynamism has been manifested in Indian cul- ture’s peculiar lifestyle de- cisions and philosophical perspectives on human ex- istence and its problems. The new parliament building has a larger seat- ing capacity than the older building, and the voting process now uses a graphi- cal interface and biomet- rics. As a “Platinum-rated Green Building,” the new edifice demonstrates In- dia’s commitment to envi- ronmental sustainability. The Constitutional Hall’s gallery area houses another remarkable installation called “Foucault’s Pendu- lum,” adding to the distinc- tive features of the new Parliament. The design for the cham- ber of the Lok Sabha, or lower house, was inspired by the peacock, the coun- try’s symbol. In the Mahab- harata, one of India’s na- tional epics, Bhishma Pita- mah argues that a king should adopt forms like the plumes of peacocks in a va- riety of colors. For the up- per house, the Rajya Sabha, the theme is India’s floral emblem, the lotus. The original document of the Indian constitution’s pre- amble also has motifs of lotus and peacock. The in- stallation of the Sengol scepter, a powerful reli- gious symbol, in the new parliament building un- questionably signaled the amalgamation of Dharma with democratic norms. BIBLE PERSPECT VE www.firstindia.co.in firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur thefirstindia thefirstindia thefirstindia 02 Jaipur, Sunday | July 16, 2023 ABOUT THE SENGOL The reintroduction of Sengol has drawn criticism from certain quarters who saw the move as anti- democratic. They held the view that new symbolism is akin to monarchy and that India under the Modi regime is abandoning the modern principles it es- poused during the Nehru era. Supporters of the move, on the other hand, dispute these claims. Both parties have strong reasons on their sides. Real life, of course, can be somewhere in the mid- dle. Nehruvian intellectu- als have faith in Western modernity and the secular world. Their story predomi- nated for most of the period following independence. They look at tradition with contempt. For them, the installation of Sengol and the process of decolonial- ity are comparable to the creation of Hindu Rashtra, a theocratic state. They believe Modi is chang- ing the national narrative to emphasize regressive views rather than progressive ones. TRADITIONANDMODERNITY: SHIFTINGGEARSINTHE INDIANDISCOURSE SYMBIOTIC BOND OF TRADITIONS WITH THE MODERN TIMES... Liberals in the Indian space are afraid that Narendra Modi is bringing in a brand of Hindu nationalism that will undermine democracy. What the prime minister understands, which his opponents do not, is that in a nation like India, ancient tradition must be cherished and brought into harmony with modernity, not discarded. In doing so, India is not so different from Europe, which likewise defends democracy while revering the history and symbols of its monarchical past. IN-DEPTH Anthropocene:Thestart ofnewEpochonEarth INDIA STRONG SNUB TO EU PARLIAMENT hese days one often comes across the word Anthropocene, a word that is explained as a new epoch in the planet’s history. It is being examined as a geological time unit for possible ad- dition to the Geological Time Scale. To come to a final conclusion an Anthropocene Working Group (AWG), a group of geologists and environmentalists, is considering if the Anthropocene could be treated as a formal unit of chrono-stratigraphic. The word was coined in 2000. The latest mention ofAnthropocene was made after scientists claimed evidence of the start of this new age was found in Canada’s Crawford Lake sediment. The AWG said that the layered sediment at the bottom of the lake showed that the world had entered the new epoch. The new epoch, the AWG, says it is defined by human activity’s de-stabilising impact on the en- vironment and the planet. The layered sediment has a 1000-year history of the earth’s environment. The damage is irreversible as human greed is insatiable. T ndia has justifiably responded strongly to the European Parliament’s scathing resolution on violence in Manipur. In its resolution the Eu- ropean Parliament called upon the European Union “to place human rights and democratic values at the heart of its engagement with India”. The resolution also de- nounced “in strongest terms nationalistic rhetoric de- ployed by leading members of the Bharatiya Janata Party”. On the situation in the country the resolution said that “minorities, civil society, human rights defenders and journalists regularly face harassment, whereas women in particular face severe challenges and viola- tions of their rights often related to tribal and religious back- grounds, including sexual violence and harassment”. In a snub, New Delhi told the Euro- pean Parliament to minditsownbusiness and not poke its nose in India’s internal af- fairs. In a strongly- worded statement the ExternalAffairs Min- istry said, “Such in- terference in India’s internal affairs is un- acceptable and reflects a colonial mindset...the Euro- pean Parliament would be well advised to utilize its time more productively on its internal issues.” AHuman Rights Watch report in 2022 pointed out that the “European Union and most member-states continue to espouse a commitment to human rights and democratic values. In practice, however, the policies and actions of the Union and member states often fall short”. It further stated that EU member states used stronger rhetoric to criticize attacks on the rule of law and democratic institutions inside the EU, but failed to take decisive action…”After these find- ings the EU has no business to criticize India for what is happening in Manipur. Besides, the Supreme Court is seized of the matter. I India has justifiably responded strongly to the European Parliament’s scathing resolution on violence in Manipur. WHY BSP SUPREMO MAYAWATI IS HAPPY? ill election strategist Prashant Kishor, who claims to announce a new politics from his ‘Jan Suraj Manch’, undergo a homecoming? Once he was included in Modi’s ‘Blue Eyed Boy’, PK is also said to have played an important role in helping the BJP win the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. When the BJP government was formed at the centre, PK went and sat in the lap of BJP’s opponents for some reason. PK took over the work of Mamata Banerjee’s election management. He started looking after the work of Arvind Kejriwal, Jagan Mohan Reddy, Nitish and to some extent Rahul Gandhi as well. It is said that the original idea of Rahul’s Bharat Jodo Yatra was also of PK. But he didn’t get on much with Rahul, rather mixed in easily with Mamata and Nitish. Then PK took out his Jan Suraj Yatra in Bihar. He went with the intention of changing the face of Bihar. But when his yatra did not get any special response in the state, then he started looking towards BJP with hopeful eyes. Sources reveal that PK has had two important meetings with the BJP top leader- ship in the last few days wherein old grievances have also been resolved and now it is being speculated that PK will play an important role in the BJP organization in the coming days and can be asked to remain active in Bihar. SP supremo Mayawati says that she has decided on her political successor. This young leader is none other than Akash Anand, Mayawati’s nephew. It is believed that after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Behenji will hand over the command of BSP to Anand. Right now, in view of the upcoming state elec- tions, Behenji has also handed over the responsi- bility of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana assembly elections to Anand. He has been made the National Coordinator of BSP. If we have a look at the list of star campaigners of BSP, then Mayawati is at number one in this list, Satish Chandra Mishra at number two and Akash Anand at number three. Akash appeared on a public platform for the first time in 2019 with his aunt Mayawati. After his initial studies from ‘Pathway School’ in Gurgaon, Akash went to London for further studies, where between 2013-16 he obtained a BBA degree from a University of London and in 2016 he started his own company ‘DJT Group’ and became the CEO and MD of this group. This group has ‘Hyper Market Derica’. Behenji is confident that by giving Akash an important role in the party, the youth will also join the BSP in a big way. Behinji’s party is also projecting Akash Anand as a ‘youth icon’. Because as the central investigative agencies tighten their noose on the Lalu family, Nitish is becoming a little reluctant. Even after declaring Tejashwi Yadav as his political heir in Bihar, the RJD family is not liking this changed gesture of Nit- ish. So, these days the BJP people are also riding on the waves of excessive enthusiasm that after Maharashtra, now ‘Khela’ may also happen in Bihar. Recently Harivansh reached Patna to meet Nitish. Though Harivansh had been asking for time to meet his party chief Nitish since a long time, Nitish was not giving him time to meet. These days Nitish is meeting one-to-one with JDU’s MPs and MLAs in Patna, so, being JDU’s MP, Harivansh’s number had also come up. It is said that Harivansh and Nitish had a closed-door meeting wherein efforts were made to remove old grievances and ‘road map’ of future politics was openly discussed. It is well known that Harivansh is close to the top of BJP. When most of the opposition parties had boycotted the inauguration of the new Parliament House, even Harivansh’s own party JDU had an- nounced its boycott, despite this Harivansh participated in it. Nitish did not take any disciplinary action against Harivansh, indicating that Nitish wants to keep one end open with BJP. In coming days, Mahakumbh of Opposition unity is to be held in Bengaluru and there are discussions that Nitish can be made coordinator of this new ‘Mahamanch’. In such a situation, what can be the purpose of riding two boats by Nitish, this secret is hidden in womb of the future. SMART TV AND THE MEDIA CENTRE IN MANIPUR FOR JOURNALISTS ver since the fire has been burning in Manipur, the administration there has been forced to bar internet services. So, the journalists working there were facing a lot of difficulties in filing their reports. Then the journalists collectively complained about this to the CM Birender Singh who asked his DPR to find a solution to this problem. DPR hastily built a media center in Imphal which was equipped with internet connection. A separate network of internet was provided in the center. A few days later, State Edu Min Basanta Singh came to hold a press conference and asked the journos, ‘Is this media center working properly?’ The journalists in turn replied, “There is only a lack of a TV.” In a hurry, the minister donated a smart TV to the media center. E B W I ‘EKLA CHALO’ FOR CONGRESS? ahul Gandhi is in a new avatar these days. He has come to know how politics is a game of snakes ladders, so he has kept all his focus on his image makeover. Rahul also knows that 2024 election is a ‘do or die’ election for him. So, despite being secretive in all the exercises of the opposition unit, he has told his party organization that ‘Congress should be prepared to contest elec- tions on its own in every state.’ He chaired meet- ing recently of Maha Cong and told party leaders that ‘Cong should be prepared to contest all the 48 Lok Sabha seats’. Coming out of the meeting, Maha- rashtra PCC chief Nana Patole, ignorantly, said that ‘Cong will contest on all the seats in Maharash- tra alone.’ On this, Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar immediately objected to Rahul and then Patole had to clarify his statement. These days Rahul is chairing the meetings, state-wise, of PCCs in which Mallikarjun Kharge, Venugopal and the state president of the concerned state attend. Cong Gen Secy Priyanka Gandhi has not been seen in such meetings till now. Word is that Rahul and Priyanka have agreed that ‘all the work of the organization will be looked after by Rahul and his team and Priyanka, as a star campaigner, will go around campaigning for Congress across country. It is said that leaders of Priyanka’s team have also been asked to restrain their tongues. Whether you’ve got a hankering for ice cream or just enjoy flipping through the metaphoric pages of history – City First got all the scoop on the most iconic vintage ice cream shops in India! any of us don’t need a special day to scream for ice cream, but back in 1984, President Reagan felt one was needed. He proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sun- day of July as National Ice Cream Day, too, saying, “Ice cream is a nutritious and whole- some food, enjoyed by over 90% of the people in the United States. It enjoys a reputation as the perfect dessert and snack food.” Can’t argue with that. There’s always room for ice cream. Eve- ryone knows that the best part of travelling is trying out all the epic varieties of foods in differ- ent places. The moment I get off the plane at a new destination, I’m already online looking for a place to have my first meal. Es- pecially when I’m abroad, it can be difficult to find a great place that satisfies what I’m looking for, and I’m often left picking where to go based on Instagram profiles. The one food I hope to find more than anything else while travelling? Ice cream. With a delicious iteration for every season, ice cream shops in the country have gone from being just family-favoured des- tinations to perfect hangout spots for first dates, weekly catch-ups with friends, and low- key celebrations. And while quirky establishments with larger-than-life portion sizes and sprinkle-dusted waffle cones are a dime a dozen in ma- jor cities, a few old-world par- lours continue to hold space in the hearts of locals. Completewithclassicflavour combinations and seasonal local ingredients – these feature fro- zen treats churned by hand or vintage contraptions, with reci- pes passed down generations. Each of these establishments has a story to tell. For a taste of all that and more, head on over tooneofthesevintageicecream shops in India. TAJ ICECREAM, MUMBAI (1887) Nestled in the hustle of Bhendi Bazaar, this hole in the wall has been serving old- school, hand-churned ice creams since the 1800s. From a limited six, the menu now boasts of up to 16 varieties – of which the custard apple, chikoo, alphonso, and lychee come highly recommended. That apart, nothing much has changed – from the oldest flavour mixed fruit to the copper canisters used for churning. Best part? There are no harmful additives in these ice creams. This spot has served the likes of Madhubala and Abbas-Mustan. APSARA ICE CREAMS, MUMBAI (1971) In 1971, Nemchand Shah began offering locals hand-churned ice cream out of a hole-in-the-wall in Walkeshwar. His frozen creations were made with the best quality seasonal fruits through a meticulous approach. This had instant takers and the business grew through word-of-mouth, eventually leading to several other branches cropping up across the city. For a taste of history, try their old-school roasted almond flavour that’s won hearts since 1984. The pani puri pataka, guava glory, and sugar-free ice creams come highly recommended as well. JAL MAHAL ICE CREAM PARLOUR, JAIPUR (1982) One of Jaipur’s most iconic, old-school ice cream parlours, Jal Mahal started with the late Mahendra Singh’s vision to serve the region’s most decadent ice creams. Despite undergoing several makeovers over the years, the quality of the frozen treats here remains unchanged. On the menu are popular options like Hot Chocolate Fudge, Earthquake Sundae, Cherry Berry Sundae, Fruit Loop Sundae Ice Cream, and more. You could also grab ice cream cakes here and there are sugar-free, eggless options on the menu. Don’t miss out if you’re in the city. LAKEVIEW MILK BAR, BENGALURU (1930) Another wildly popular spot in Bengaluru, this milk bar and ice cream parlour dates back to the early 1900s and was started by an English native James Meadow Charles. The banana split here is a must-try and their milkshakes and sandwiches are also popular. Lakeview Milk Bar has a reputation for standing firm through several changes in the city, keeping its shutters open for diners and those seeking a sweet bite. It’s also popularly known as the city’s Willy Wonka Factory. FAMOUS ICE CREAM, HYDERABAD (1951) One of Old City’s most popular dessert spots, Famous Ice Cream is named after Moazzam Jah, the son of the last Nizam of Hyderabad. The ice cream parlour is known for its hand-churned, seasonal fare. First established in the 1950s, locals have long been raving about the additive-free frozen fare here, the most recommended of which are the mango, chikoo, custard apple, and chocolate flavours. The atmosphere is quite laid-back as well, with plastic chairs and old-school tables overlooking yesteryear architecture. Drop by for the history and stay for the creamy treats. M
