Brooding involves rearing chicks after hatching until they are 3-4 weeks old and can survive on their own. There are two types of brooding: natural brooding done with a broody hen or artificial brooding using brooders without hens. A brooder comprises a heating source like charcoal, gas or electric bulbs, reflectors called hovers, and a brooder guard to keep chicks near the heat. Chicks must also be provided proper feed and water management including various types of feeders and waterers.
