Friday lunchtime lectures from the Open Data Institute of North Carolina. For our June 6th lecture... What is open data and why should I care? You have heard about open data. Raleigh has an open data portal, and Wake County, Durham and Durham County, North Carolina and many other municipal governments are looking into open data. We will be giving an introduction to open data and a few reasons open data is important to citizens, businesses and government.

Ian Henshaw gave a presentation on open data to Chapel Hill, NC. He discussed key US laws around transparency including the Freedom of Information Act and state public records laws. He defined open data as data that is publicly available in machine readable formats with open licenses allowing reuse. Open data can provide benefits like increased government transparency, economic opportunities, and greater citizen engagement.

Government Linked Data: A Tipping Point for the Semantic Web

ODIN: Connecting research and researchers

Building the Future of Research Together

Objectives: To explore potential collaborations between academic libraries and Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA)-funded institutes with respect to data management training and support. Methods: The National Institutes of Health CTSAs have established a well-funded, crucial infrastructure supporting large-scale collaborative biomedical research. This infrastructure is also valuable for smaller, more localized research projects. While infrastructure and corresponding support is often available for large, well-funded projects, these services have generally not been extended to smaller projects. This is a missed opportunity on both accounts. Academic libraries providing data services can leverage CTSA-based resources, while CTSA-funded institutes can extend their reach beyond large biomedical projectsto serve the long tail of research data. Results: A year-long series of conversations with the Indiana CTSI Data Management Team resulted in resource sharing, consensus building about key issues in data management, provision of expert feedback on a data management training curriculum, and several avenues for future collaborations. Conclusions:Data management training for graduate students and early career researchers is a vital area of need that would benefit from the combined infrastructure and expertise of translational science institutes and academic libraries. Such partnerships can leverage the instructional, preservation, and access expertise in academic libraries, along with the storage, security, and analytical expertise in translational science institutes to improve the management, protection, and access of valuable research data.

The Importance of Open Data and Models for Energy Systems Analysis

October 24, 2014: Joseph DeCarolis, Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University, will present The Importance of Open Data and Models for Energy Systems Analysis. Energy system models represent a critical planning tool that can be used to deliver policy-relevant insights at scales ranging from local to global. When such models are used to inform public policy, the associated data and source code should be open in order to enable third party replication of results, expose hidden assumptions, and identify key model sensitivities. In this talk, I describe my own effort to push open data and models within the international energy modeling community.
