Urban Logistics offers unique tailor-made solutions for the transport of goods in cities by consolidating & rationalizing the existing logistics platforms and creating innovative solutions for the future through the use of information and communication technologies.
Over the past two decades delivering goods into cities has become a challenge with cities getting overly congested and traffic jams resulting in expensive logistics bottlenecks. Studies show that the cost of congestion now in terms of time wasted in traffic and fuel consumption is off the roof, almost 200% more than what it was in the 1980s. Pollution, lack of parking bays, and warehousing costs are all restraints that are contributing to the economic cost of urban logistics.
This presentation, part of a class work of Erwan Le Roc'h, Antony Zouzout and Rémi Philippe at ESSEC will explore the possibilities and ideal mix for this kind of project.

Business intelligence on the chinese greentech marketEC2i
EC2i objective is to support the internationalisation of European Cleantech SMEs in China and the United States by conducting cluster missions and facilitating cross-cluster partnerships. In this sense, attention is paid to developing tools to guide SMEs through the process of forming consortia and developing projects with clients.
Business intelligence for relevant US and Chinese markets have been collected in reports and are here disseminated to SMEs.
The tools presented here address general barrieres to internationalisation as well as more specific problems SMEs face when integrating themselves into complex, international value chains.
Imagine a world in which people and goods can move with minimum impact on the local environment and climate. Imagine an intelligent transport system with smart infrastructure and smart, connected vehicles powered predominantly by renewable energy, and with enlightened end-users: private individuals and enterprises. Imagine a system that is actually based on user demand. That is what we would like to see.
To put mobility and transport on the track to sustainability, we have to improve energy efficiency, switch to renewable energy and more efficient modes of mobility, and, most importantly, increase smartness at all levels of the system. In practice, the last point means smart and efficient mobility services, cooperative systems, and intelligent vehicles and infrastructure.
VTT has a toolbox and the expertise to tackle all the key challenges of smart low-carbon mobility. And, to really make an impact, we are cooperating with all the key stakeholders in the field. Let us re-invent mobility and co-create a better future together!

Thank you.
As I’ve listened to today I’ve heard much about two subjects, Connected Vehicles and the movement of passengers – but little about the movement of freight to support all these people who will be living in the urban environment in the future. IN the next 15 minutes I’ll talk about a few EU Programmes looking at how co-operative systems can help freight.
TQ Speaking Points:
Intro Theo
Intro Logica; 3.7Bn revenues, 41,000 people, 41 countries
Here are a few of our accomplishments – highlight Network Rail.
------
Just a quick introduction, I‘m Theo Quick, Global leader for the ITS Practice at Logica.
For those of you that don‘t already know us, Logica is a business and technical services company, with revenues of 3.7Bn and 41,000 people working out of 41 countries.
On this slide you will see some of our accomplishments; for example our Journey Planner in Finland is the second most valued brand after Google and also here in the UK where we helped Network Rail invoice £2Bn for usage of the network based on real useage rather than assumed data. This now includes the electricity being used via smart meters.
TQ Speaker Notes:
Million trucks – 2 200 000 million tonne-kilometres (tkm) in 2009; a little over three quarters (77.5 %) of this freight total was transported over roads in 2009
Utilisation – Stobart state that 87.5% asset utilisation. A 1% drop in this saves 1.7m miles/year which equates to £2.7M
EU
optimise urban logistics efficiency, including on improving the links between long-distance, inter-urban and urban freight transport, aiming to ensure efficient ‘last mile’ delivery.
As you can see from the slide, they intended to hold a conference on this – this was held in November of that year.
The basic problems being addressed are:
Connecting the city to the hinterland
Consolidation Centres
Urban Planning and Freight Distribution Plans
Last-Mile Logistics
Management fright movement in the city
Clean vehicles for urban freight transport
---------------------------
As you can see from this slide freight accounts for a large proportion of the many challenges. Those millions of trucks account for 2 200 000 million tonne-kilometres (tkm) in 2009; a little over three quarters was by road.
But it also seems crazy that the EU estimates that ½ of all trucks are empty (I’ve also heard other figures such as a 1/3 but even so it’s a lot) - Stobart state that 87.5% asset utilisation. A 1% drop in this saves 1.7m miles/year which equates to £2.7M
So to optimise freight is important. The EU have also included it in their ITS for Urban Mobility Directive – you can see what they’ve stated on the slide. They are looking to optimise urban logistics efficiency, including on improving the links between long-distance, inter-urban and urban freight transport, aiming to ensure efficient ‘last mile’ delivery.
As you can see from the slide, they intended to hold a conference on this – this was held in November of that year and the projects (and others) which I’ll briefly describe to you today are looking to help address these points.
TQ Speaking Notes:
These 5 programmes are co-operative in nature.
All EU funded apart from SPITS
Accounts for >50M of investment
Started with:
ARMAS - Active Road Management Assisted by Satellite
CVIS, Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure Systems which ran 2004 – 2009
develop & test the technologies needed to allow cars to communicate with each other and with the nearby roadside infrastructure
This had a freight component. TfL tested the ability to automatically book unloading spaces
SPITS, was a successor to CVIS looking at co-operative systems to improve mobility and safety.
Underpin EURIDICE, eCoMove and iCargo – I’ll elaborate on these later in the next few slides
-------------------------------
All the programmes on this slide apart from SPITS are EU funded projects. SPITS was funded by the Dutch government and account for >50M of investment by the EU and the consortiums which have delivered the projects.
ARMAS, Active Road Management Assisted by Satellite, funded by ESA looking to improve road traffic and road safety overall. (10M) (2002 – 2008)
CVIS, Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure Systems is a major new European research and development project aiming to design, develop and test the technologies needed to allow cars to communicate with each other and with the nearby roadside infrastructure. [2004-2009] (http://www.cvisproject.org/)
SPITS, a Dutch project, tasked with creating Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) concepts that can improve mobility and safety. National follow up initiative of CVIS [2010-2011] in cooperation with NXP, TNO, TomTom, universities and SME’s. (http://spits-project.com/what-is-spits)
EURIDICE, an Integrated Project funded by the European Commission to build an information services platform centred on the individual cargo item and on its interaction with the surrounding environment and the user. [2007-2012] (http://www.euridice-project.eu/)
eCoMove, a 3-year integrated project (April 2010 - March 2013), funded by the European Commission to create an integrated solution for road transport energy efficiency to help drivers, freight and road operators. [2011-2014] (http://www.ecomove-project.eu/)
iCargo, Intelligent Cargo in Efficient and Sustainable Global Logistics Operations. Also an integrated Project funded by the European Commission to build an open affordable information architecture that allows real world objects, existing systems, and new applications to efficiently co-operate, enabling more cost effective and lower-CO2 logistics through improved synchronisation and load factors across all transport modes. [2011-2015] (http://i-cargo.eu/)
TQ Speaker Notes:
EURIDICE ran from 2007 and is just publishing its results.
It looks at how cargo can be tracked using a virtual presence in the Cloud
By doing this you can provide a best guess of where the item is. This combined with physical location be that from manifests, or vehicle location allows the operators to know what where the item is at all times.
This is more for looking at the longer logistic chains
-------------------------------
EURIDICE, an Integrated Project funded by the European Commission to build an information services platform centred on the individual cargo item and on its interaction with the surrounding environment and the user. [2007-2012] (http://www.euridice-project.eu/)
TQ Speaker Notes:
eCoMove kicked off in April 2010 and will complete next March
It aims to look at the energy efficiency to help all users of the network; drivers, road operators as well as freight.
For freight they are specifically looking at
in-vehicle truck ecoNavigation,
ecoDriver Coaching System
cooperative ecoFleet Planning & Routing
Find the best combination of vehicle, trailer, route, driver, system configuration based on Mission information, Traffic Management data, Truck & driver models and Routing system
Feedback from previous missions to adapt /optimize the planning & routing system
As I play out this build you can see the number of data movements, the information flows from
vehicle to vehicle
Vehicle to infrastructure and
Command to infrastruture
---------------------------
eCoMove, a 3-year integrated project (April 2010 - March 2013), funded by the European Commission to create an integrated solution for road transport energy efficiency to help drivers, freight and road operators. [2011-2014] (http://www.ecomove-project.eu/)
in-vehicle truck ecoNavigation, i.e. most efficient route for trucks.
ecoDriver Coaching System for goods vehicle drivers:
Pre-trip: ecoDriving training system with virtual simulator where the driver experiences the eCoMove system and its use cases.
On-trip: real-time eco driving advice on in-vehicle display
Post-trip: fleet management backoffice to analyse trends, give feedback to the drivers, handle incentives
cooperative ecoFleet Planning & Routing taking into account previous missions.
Find the best combination of vehicle, trailer, route, driver, system configuration based on Mission information, Traffic Management data, Truck & driver models and Routing system
Feedback from previous missions to adapt /optimize the planning & routing system
TQ Speaker Notes:
And the last programme iCargo.
The iCargo technical vision is based on an Entity-centric approach which means that the cargo but also the means of transportation like trucks are being connected to enable exchange of information across business domains (along the Supply Chain)
The iCargo project will implement new logistic services within existing business processes of partners like DHL and Unilever.
Beside reduction of empty space in the trucks, also carbon emission reports across the supply chain will become possible.
The iCargo project will make use of the results of previous projects like CVIS and the current developments in ECOMove.
The Intelligent Cargo solution will become part of our M2M programme -> bridge to your next slide.
But I hope that this isn’t the last – Mobinet……
----------------------------------------------
iCargo, Intelligent Cargo in Efficient and Sustainable Global Logistics Operations.
Our work in co-operative vehicles is now starting to bring us new clients. We are working with Automotive OEMs to help define their telematics / V2x platform and actively talking to others to help shape their vision.
We are also investing in its own Machine2Machine platform and these solutions and services are key to the our business case for this investment. The base platform will be commercially available in a month.
We will be porting many of our current offerings onto it such as EMO, CRIMSON (pay-how-you-drive insurance) as well as many of the SPITS, iCargo, eCoMove applications.
This platform lowers the cost of entry looking at small numbers of transactions, but scales as required. We already built and support 2 of the most complex telco M2M platforms in the world so this is just an extension to this knowledge.
So in summary, there are a lot of proof of concepts and industrial trails underway to ensure the freight can move efficiently with minimal impact in the urban environment. Co-operative systems underpin many of the changes which are needed.
I hope you have found this interesting and happy to discuss any of the points raised with you once we’ve got a glass in our hands.
Many thanks

Today I’ll be talking at the Frost & Sullivan Urban Mobility 3.0 event held in London. This 2 day event looks to bring thinkers together looking at the future for Urban Mobility. With 75% of people expected to live in the urban environment by XXX we need to look at how we need to change the ways we use transportation.
Logica has been involved in a number co-operative systems projects such as CVIS and SPITS (PUT IN LINKS) and are active in
