“The Power of Prayer”
• Jobe Martin wrote, “For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our
trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure,
above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: 9 But we had the
sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in
God which raiseth the dead: 10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and
doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us; 11 Ye also helping
together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of
many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf. 2 Cor 1:8–11
• [The word sunupourgeo translated “helping together” is used only here in
the Greek New Testament and is composed of three words: with, under,
work. It is a picture of laborers under the burden, working together to get
the job accomplished. It is encouraging to know that the Holy Spirit also
assists us in our praying and helps to carry the load (Rom. 8:26).[1]]

2 Corinthians 1:3, WHO WAS THE FIRST
COMFORTER?, by Dr. Lizorkin-Eyzenberg
• “On one occasion Jesus made a curious promise to his disciples. He said: “I will ask the Father, and
he will give you another Comforter” (John 14:16). This implies, of course, that he himself was the
first Comforter. But why did he phrase it this way?
• Based on hymns found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, Israel Knohl, a professor at the Hebrew
University – and a guest lecturer with us here at Israel Study Center – argued that one generation
before Jesus, a messianic leader arose and became known as the Teacher of Righteousness.
• It is possible to identify this person with Menachem the Essene who held an advisory position in the
court of King Herod. Menachem led a very dangerous life, secretly preparing for what eventually
proved to be an unsuccessful revolt. His followers believed that he was the Messiah; but he was
disgraced and killed by Roman soldiers during the revolt in 4 B.C.E. (Later they understood him to be
fulfillment of the suffering servant texts in Isaiah). The Hebrew word that lies behind the above-
mentioned “Comforter” is in fact Menachem (‫)מנחם‬ – same as the name of the Essene leader
mentioned by Josephus Flavius.
• It is possible that Jesus, by referring to the coming Holy Spirit as “another Comforter,” was
identifying himself as the true/ultimate Menachem (‫;)מנחם‬ and that he was calling the Essene
community to put its trust in Him instead. Unlike Menachem the Essene, the Ultimate Comforter
(Jesus) led a successful rebellion against all the enemies of Israel and by his resurrection overcame
even sin and death! (This intriguing interpretation may help to explain Act 2:44-45. According to this
text many early followers of Christ Jesus kept “all things in common” just as the Essenes did).”

2 Cor 1:8, 7 Phrases Christians Like to
Say That Aren't Biblical, by Lori Hatcher
• “We’ve all heard them—phrases that sound wise, insightful, and biblical. But are they really?
• First Corinthians 10:13 is one of the first verses I memorized as a new believer, and its truth has
carried me through many a temptation: “No temptation has seized you except what is common to
man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you
are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”
• Notice two important parts of this empowering verse. First, God will never allow us to be tempted
beyond what we can bear. This tells us we can have victory over any temptation we encounter.
Nothing is too hard to resist.
• Second, God will always provide a way to escape. Joseph is a great example of this. Remember
when Potiphar’s wife tried to entice him to sleep with her? “My husband is away, and I’ve ordered
all the servants out of the house,” she said. “Come to bed with me. No one will ever know...” I’m
sure her offer was mighty tempting. He was young and virile, and she was rich and beautiful. But
Joseph knew giving in to his desires would be a sin. Instead of succumbing, he took the “way out”
God provided. When Potiphar’s wife caught him by his cloak, “he left his cloak in her hand and ran
out of the house” (Genesis 39:12). Not very dignified, but highly effective.
• As long as we’re alive, our sinful nature will tempt us. Notice the wording in the passage above. It
doesn’t say, “if you are tempted.” It says, “when you are tempted.” Knowing this, we’d be wise to
set up this three-fold defense before we encounter a temptation: First, memorize 1 Corinthians
10:13. Second, look for the way of escape. Third, take it.”

2 Cor 1:21-22, OSAS
• OSAS And 1 Tim. 4:16
• Thursday, February 27th, 2014 Once Saved Always Saved
• Salvation
• Q. Could you please explain the significance of 1 Tim 4:16, to OSAS? In this verse, it seems Paul is speaking to those in
ministry, and it does appear he is saying that they must make certain they keep their own salvation as well as that of those
they are teaching by what they are teaching. It would seem from what is being said in previous verses that these leaders are
saved, but could be in danger of losing it (salvation) through wrong teaching, as well as their recipients not receiving it. If
anyone can give a clear understanding and clarity to this, I believe you can.
• A. Here’s what 1 Tim. 4:16 says;
• Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
• If you were to read this verse in a vacuum, you could make such an assumption. But no statement in the New Testament
(especially not one of Paul’s) can contradict his promises of eternal security for Church Age believers (2 Cor. 1:21-22, 2 Cor.
5:5, Ephesians 1:13-14). These verses make it clear that having already been saved, Timothy could not be in danger of losing
his salvation if he didn’t adhere to correct teaching.
• Therefore, 1 Tim. 4:16 has to be understood as Paul telling Timothy that if he watched his doctrine carefully the end result
would not only be saving himself (already happened) but also those he would be teaching (going to happen). I think Paul was
stressing the importance of adhering to correct doctrine in assuring a fruitful career, rather than warning him that the failure
to do so could endanger his salvation.
• This is good advice for all pastors and teachers, and goes along with Paul’s admonition to present ourselves to God as
workmen approved, who do not need to be ashamed of the way we’ve handled His word (2 Tim. 2:15).
416/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Gracethrufaith+%28GraceThruFaith%29
• DLK adds that this could be about temporal salvation, our eternal salvation is by grace not by our “life”, but leading a Godly
life leaves little room for legitimate persecution, and our critics can’t get traction, and our good example/witness can lead
others to salvation in Christ.

2 Corinthians 1:22, Demonic
Possession?• Question: "What does the Bible say about demon possession / demonic possession?"
Answer: The Bible gives some examples of people possessed or influenced by demons. From these examples we can find some symptoms of demonic influence and gain insight as to how a
demon possesses someone. Here are some of the biblical passages: Matthew 9:32-33; 12:22; 17:18; Mark 5:1-20; 7:26-30; Luke 4:33-36; Luke 22:3; Acts 16:16-18. In some of these passages,
the demon possession causes physical ailments such as inability to speak, epileptic symptoms, blindness, etc. In other cases, it causes the individual to do evil, Judas being the main
example. In Acts 16:16-18, the spirit apparently gives a slave girl some ability to know things beyond her own learning. The demon-possessed man of the Gadarenes, who was possessed by
a multitude of demons (Legion), had superhuman strength and lived naked among the tombstones. King Saul, after rebelling against the LORD, was troubled by an evil spirit (1 Samuel
16:14-15; 18:10-11; 19:9-10) with the apparent effect of a depressed mood and an increased desire to kill David.
Thus, there is a wide variety of possible symptoms of demon possession, such as a physical impairment that cannot be attributed to an actual physiological problem, a personality change
such as depression or aggression, supernatural strength, immodesty, antisocial behavior, and perhaps the ability to share information that one has no natural way of knowing. It is
important to note that nearly all, if not all, of these characteristics may have other explanations, so it is important not to label every depressed person or epileptic individual as demon-
possessed. On the other hand, Western cultures probably do not take satanic involvement in people’s lives seriously enough.
In addition to these physical or emotional distinctions, one can also look at spiritual attributes showing demonic influence. These may include a refusal to forgive (2 Corinthians 2:10-11) and
the belief in and spread of false doctrine, especially concerning Jesus Christ and His atoning work (2 Corinthians 11:3-4, 13-15; 1 Timothy 4:1-5; 1 John 4:1-3).
Concerning the involvement of demons in the lives of Christians, the apostle Peter is an illustration of the fact that a believer can be influenced by the devil (Matthew 16:23). Some refer to
Christians who are under a strong demonic influence as being “demonized,” but never is there an example in Scripture of a believer in Christ being possessed by a demon. Most theologians
believe that a Christian cannot be possessed because he has the Holy Spirit abiding within (2 Corinthians 1:22; 5:5; 1 Corinthians 6:19), and the Spirit of God would not share residence with
a demon.
We are not told exactly how one opens himself up for possession. If Judas’ case is representative, he opened his heart to evil—in his case by his greed (John 12:6). So it may be possible that
if one allows his heart to be ruled by some habitual sin, it becomes an invitation for a demon to enter. From missionaries’ experiences, demon possession also seems to be related to the
worship of heathen idols and the possession of occult materials. Scripture repeatedly relates idol worship to the actual worship of demons (Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17; Psalm
106:37; 1 Corinthians 10:20), so it should not be surprising that involvement with idolatry could lead to demon possession.
Based on the above scriptural passages and some of the experiences of missionaries, we can conclude that many people open their lives up to demon involvement through the embracing
of some sin or through cultic involvement (either knowingly or unknowingly). Examples may include immorality, drug/alcohol abuse that alters one’s state of consciousness, rebellion,
bitterness, and transcendental meditation.
There is an additional consideration. Satan and his evil host can do nothing the Lord does not allow them to do (Job 1-2). This being the case, Satan, thinking he is accomplishing his own
purposes, is actually accomplishing God’s good purposes, as in the case of Judas’ betrayal. Some people develop an unhealthy fascination with the occult and demonic activity. This is
unwise and unbiblical. If we pursue God, if we are clothing ourselves with His armor and relying upon His strength (Ephesians 6:10-18), we have nothing to fear from the evil ones, for God
rules over all!

  • 50. 2 Corinthians 1:3, WHO WAS THE FIRST COMFORTER?, by Dr. Lizorkin-Eyzenberg • “On one occasion Jesus made a curious promise to his disciples. He said: “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter” (John 14:16). This implies, of course, that he himself was the first Comforter. But why did he phrase it this way? • Based on hymns found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, Israel Knohl, a professor at the Hebrew University – and a guest lecturer with us here at Israel Study Center – argued that one generation before Jesus, a messianic leader arose and became known as the Teacher of Righteousness. • It is possible to identify this person with Menachem the Essene who held an advisory position in the court of King Herod. Menachem led a very dangerous life, secretly preparing for what eventually proved to be an unsuccessful revolt. His followers believed that he was the Messiah; but he was disgraced and killed by Roman soldiers during the revolt in 4 B.C.E. (Later they understood him to be fulfillment of the suffering servant texts in Isaiah). The Hebrew word that lies behind the above- mentioned “Comforter” is in fact Menachem (‫)מנחם‬ – same as the name of the Essene leader mentioned by Josephus Flavius. • It is possible that Jesus, by referring to the coming Holy Spirit as “another Comforter,” was identifying himself as the true/ultimate Menachem (‫;)מנחם‬ and that he was calling the Essene community to put its trust in Him instead. Unlike Menachem the Essene, the Ultimate Comforter (Jesus) led a successful rebellion against all the enemies of Israel and by his resurrection overcame even sin and death! (This intriguing interpretation may help to explain Act 2:44-45. According to this text many early followers of Christ Jesus kept “all things in common” just as the Essenes did).” 50
  • 54. 2 Cor 1:8, 7 Phrases Christians Like to Say That Aren't Biblical, by Lori Hatcher • “We’ve all heard them—phrases that sound wise, insightful, and biblical. But are they really? • First Corinthians 10:13 is one of the first verses I memorized as a new believer, and its truth has carried me through many a temptation: “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” • Notice two important parts of this empowering verse. First, God will never allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear. This tells us we can have victory over any temptation we encounter. Nothing is too hard to resist. • Second, God will always provide a way to escape. Joseph is a great example of this. Remember when Potiphar’s wife tried to entice him to sleep with her? “My husband is away, and I’ve ordered all the servants out of the house,” she said. “Come to bed with me. No one will ever know...” I’m sure her offer was mighty tempting. He was young and virile, and she was rich and beautiful. But Joseph knew giving in to his desires would be a sin. Instead of succumbing, he took the “way out” God provided. When Potiphar’s wife caught him by his cloak, “he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house” (Genesis 39:12). Not very dignified, but highly effective. • As long as we’re alive, our sinful nature will tempt us. Notice the wording in the passage above. It doesn’t say, “if you are tempted.” It says, “when you are tempted.” Knowing this, we’d be wise to set up this three-fold defense before we encounter a temptation: First, memorize 1 Corinthians 10:13. Second, look for the way of escape. Third, take it.” 54

  • 57. 2 Cor 1:21-22, OSAS • OSAS And 1 Tim. 4:16 • Thursday, February 27th, 2014 Once Saved Always Saved • Salvation • Q. Could you please explain the significance of 1 Tim 4:16, to OSAS? In this verse, it seems Paul is speaking to those in ministry, and it does appear he is saying that they must make certain they keep their own salvation as well as that of those they are teaching by what they are teaching. It would seem from what is being said in previous verses that these leaders are saved, but could be in danger of losing it (salvation) through wrong teaching, as well as their recipients not receiving it. If anyone can give a clear understanding and clarity to this, I believe you can. • A. Here’s what 1 Tim. 4:16 says; • Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. • If you were to read this verse in a vacuum, you could make such an assumption. But no statement in the New Testament (especially not one of Paul’s) can contradict his promises of eternal security for Church Age believers (2 Cor. 1:21-22, 2 Cor. 5:5, Ephesians 1:13-14). These verses make it clear that having already been saved, Timothy could not be in danger of losing his salvation if he didn’t adhere to correct teaching. • Therefore, 1 Tim. 4:16 has to be understood as Paul telling Timothy that if he watched his doctrine carefully the end result would not only be saving himself (already happened) but also those he would be teaching (going to happen). I think Paul was stressing the importance of adhering to correct doctrine in assuring a fruitful career, rather than warning him that the failure to do so could endanger his salvation. • This is good advice for all pastors and teachers, and goes along with Paul’s admonition to present ourselves to God as workmen approved, who do not need to be ashamed of the way we’ve handled His word (2 Tim. 2:15). • http://gracethrufaith.com/ask-a-bible-teacher/osas-1-tim- 416/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Gracethrufaith+%28GraceThruFaith%29 • DLK adds that this could be about temporal salvation, our eternal salvation is by grace not by our “life”, but leading a Godly life leaves little room for legitimate persecution, and our critics can’t get traction, and our good example/witness can lead others to salvation in Christ. 57
  • 58. 2 Corinthians 1:22, Demonic Possession?• Question: "What does the Bible say about demon possession / demonic possession?" Answer: The Bible gives some examples of people possessed or influenced by demons. From these examples we can find some symptoms of demonic influence and gain insight as to how a demon possesses someone. Here are some of the biblical passages: Matthew 9:32-33; 12:22; 17:18; Mark 5:1-20; 7:26-30; Luke 4:33-36; Luke 22:3; Acts 16:16-18. In some of these passages, the demon possession causes physical ailments such as inability to speak, epileptic symptoms, blindness, etc. In other cases, it causes the individual to do evil, Judas being the main example. In Acts 16:16-18, the spirit apparently gives a slave girl some ability to know things beyond her own learning. The demon-possessed man of the Gadarenes, who was possessed by a multitude of demons (Legion), had superhuman strength and lived naked among the tombstones. King Saul, after rebelling against the LORD, was troubled by an evil spirit (1 Samuel 16:14-15; 18:10-11; 19:9-10) with the apparent effect of a depressed mood and an increased desire to kill David. Thus, there is a wide variety of possible symptoms of demon possession, such as a physical impairment that cannot be attributed to an actual physiological problem, a personality change such as depression or aggression, supernatural strength, immodesty, antisocial behavior, and perhaps the ability to share information that one has no natural way of knowing. It is important to note that nearly all, if not all, of these characteristics may have other explanations, so it is important not to label every depressed person or epileptic individual as demon- possessed. On the other hand, Western cultures probably do not take satanic involvement in people’s lives seriously enough. In addition to these physical or emotional distinctions, one can also look at spiritual attributes showing demonic influence. These may include a refusal to forgive (2 Corinthians 2:10-11) and the belief in and spread of false doctrine, especially concerning Jesus Christ and His atoning work (2 Corinthians 11:3-4, 13-15; 1 Timothy 4:1-5; 1 John 4:1-3). Concerning the involvement of demons in the lives of Christians, the apostle Peter is an illustration of the fact that a believer can be influenced by the devil (Matthew 16:23). Some refer to Christians who are under a strong demonic influence as being “demonized,” but never is there an example in Scripture of a believer in Christ being possessed by a demon. Most theologians believe that a Christian cannot be possessed because he has the Holy Spirit abiding within (2 Corinthians 1:22; 5:5; 1 Corinthians 6:19), and the Spirit of God would not share residence with a demon. We are not told exactly how one opens himself up for possession. If Judas’ case is representative, he opened his heart to evil—in his case by his greed (John 12:6). So it may be possible that if one allows his heart to be ruled by some habitual sin, it becomes an invitation for a demon to enter. From missionaries’ experiences, demon possession also seems to be related to the worship of heathen idols and the possession of occult materials. Scripture repeatedly relates idol worship to the actual worship of demons (Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17; Psalm 106:37; 1 Corinthians 10:20), so it should not be surprising that involvement with idolatry could lead to demon possession. Based on the above scriptural passages and some of the experiences of missionaries, we can conclude that many people open their lives up to demon involvement through the embracing of some sin or through cultic involvement (either knowingly or unknowingly). Examples may include immorality, drug/alcohol abuse that alters one’s state of consciousness, rebellion, bitterness, and transcendental meditation. There is an additional consideration. Satan and his evil host can do nothing the Lord does not allow them to do (Job 1-2). This being the case, Satan, thinking he is accomplishing his own purposes, is actually accomplishing God’s good purposes, as in the case of Judas’ betrayal. Some people develop an unhealthy fascination with the occult and demonic activity. This is unwise and unbiblical. If we pursue God, if we are clothing ourselves with His armor and relying upon His strength (Ephesians 6:10-18), we have nothing to fear from the evil ones, for God rules over all! 3. Welcome to the Talk Thru the Bible visual Bible overview series. Today, we’re going to survey the book of Romans to give you a better feel for the contents of the book as you begin to study it.
  4. Let’s begin by exploring the introduction and title of 2 Corinthians.
  5. To distinguish this epistle from First Corinthians, it was given the title Pros Korinthious B, the “Second to the Corinthians.” The A and B were probably later additions to Pros Korinthious.
  6. Let’s have a look at the authorship of the book of 2 Corinthians.
  7. External and internal evidence amply support the Pauline authorship of this letter. As with Romans, the problem of Second Corinthians is with its lack of unity, not with its authorship. Many critics theorize that chapters 10–13 were not a part of this letter in its original form because their tone contrasts with that of chapters 1–9. It is held that the sudden change from a spirit of joy and comfort to a spirit of concern and self-defense points to a “seam” between two different letters. Many hypotheses have been advanced to explain the problem, but the most popular is that chapters 10–13 belong to a lost letter referred to in chapter 2, verse 4. Several problems arise with these attempts to dissect Second Corinthians. Chapters 10–13 do not fit Paul’s description of the “lost” letter of chapter 2 because they are firm but not sorrowful and because they do not refer to the offender about whom that letter was written (2:5–11). Also, this earlier material would have been appended at the beginning of Second Corinthians, not at the end. There is simply no external (manuscripts, church fathers, tradition) or internal basis for challenging the unity of this epistle. The difference in tone between chapters 1–9 and chapters 10–13 is easily explained by the change of focus from the repentant majority to the rebellious minority.
  8. Upon returning to Ephesus, Paul regretfully wrote his sorrowful letter to urge the church to discipline the leader of the opposition (2:1–11; 7:8). Titus carried this letter. Paul, anxious to learn the results, went to Troas and then to Macedonia to meet Titus on his return trip (2:12–13; 7:5–16). Paul was greatly relieved by Titus’ report that the majority of the Corinthians had repented of their rebelliousness against Paul’s apostolic authority. However, a minority opposition still persisted, evidently led by a group of Judaizers (10–13). There in Macedonia Paul wrote Second Corinthians and sent it with Titus and another brother (8:16–24). This took place late in A.D. 56, and the Macedonian city from which it was written may have been Philippi. Paul then made his third trip to Corinth (12:14; 13:1–2; Acts 20:1–3) where he wrote his letter to the Romans.
  9. There is an alternate view that the anguished letter (2:4 and 7:8) is in fact First Corinthians and not a lost letter. This would require that the offender (2:5–11; 7:12) be identified with the offender of First Corinthians 5.
  10. The major theme of Second Corinthians is Paul’s defense of his apostolic credentials and authority. This is especially evident in the portion directed to the still rebellious minority (10–13), but the theme of vindication is also clear in chapters 1–9. Certain “false apostles” mounted an effective campaign against Paul in the church at Corinth, and Paul had to take a number of steps to overcome the opposition.

It is a picture of laborers under the burden, working together to get the job accomplished. It is encouraging to know that the Holy Spirit also assists us in our praying and helps to carry the load (Rom. 8:26).[1]]             The Lord delivered Paul because of both his faith and the faith of those faithfully lifting him up in prayer in Corinth. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. Psalm 34:6 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. Colossians 4:12 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me. Romans 15:30 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you. 2 Thessalonians 3:1 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, 16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; 17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power. Ephesians 1:15-19 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:16–19 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26–27   Notice that the Apostle Paul firmly believed that there was a fierce spiritual and physical battle that needed strong prayer support. Consider carrying the prayerful mindset that the Holy Spirit will lead and guide us as we pray for others so that we are praying more accurately for their needs and lead less by our fleshly perspective or desires in the situation. We might be frustrated with someone, possibly through not understanding a situation completely, and start praying that the Lord would remove this or that from their lives or teach them a lesson… when in reality, if we had been sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading, we would have realized that the Lord wanted us to thank Him for this person, pray for their wisdom to increase in the Lord’s Word for handling the situation, or that they would receive the spiritual blessings they need to handle accurately their life’s circumstances. Because we did not go to prayer with a ministry mindset, trying to see the bigger picture, we missed a blessing by not loving them enough to listen to the Holy Spirit’s leading, and they did not get the prayer support that the Lord wanted us to give them. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Romans 15:13 Consider praying that the “process” you are going through would conform you to the image of the Savior. We all need to consider the impact that praying through Paul’s model prayers might have on us and others in the Body of Christ whose personality traits may create irritations or frustrations. If we were praying that our love would abound, our biblical discernment would increase, and we would be filled with the fruit of Jesus’ righteousness, then imagine the impact this could make on relationships within the family, work, and the Body of Christ! Is our prayer in trials that they would serve to draw us into a deeper, fuller relationship with our Savior, Jesus Christ, or that they would just “end soon”? Can we have the attitude that the trials of life will help us to come forth “as gold” for the Lord or are we just praying for the escape route as quickly as possible? Could we be asking to get out of a refining time of life that the Lord knows we need now in order to be prepared for future events/ministry opportunities in our lives? Are we getting bogged down in the everyday “quick fix” prayer needs over and above the wrestling in prayer that Paul and other pillars of the faith talk about in the Word? Why not consider praying along the lines of Philippians 1:9–11: And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; 10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; 11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God. In Paul’s prayers, we see examples of a deep love for the brethren’s growth in the Lord Jesus and sharing their faith in conjunction with protection from false teaching and spiritual warfare. He focused on praying that life-changing character qualities would be developed in the believers as the Early Church began to grow. One way to encourage other believers that prayer truly does change lives is to share what Christ is doing in your life and the ways He is answering prayer and providing for you. Look at Paul’s challenge to Philemon in vs. 6, That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. When we focus on looking for all the praises we have in each day and then using those to encourage others, it brings amazing blessings! Our hearts are uplifted as we see the incredible ways the Lord is providing, which lifts our countenance, those around us are encouraged, and possibly then challenged to see new answers to prayer and blessings in each day. Thus, everyone can experience the encouragement of rejoicing over the workings of the Lord in their lives. This joy of the Lord will then be reflected to all those around. You want others to see Jesus’ love shinning through you! They are not going to if you are frustrated, sad, irritated, sarcastic, condescending, or depressed throughout each day. By the Grace of God, we CAN choose to “rejoice evermore” as 1 Thessalonians 5:16commands. It is in the next two verses of that chapter that we are also commanded to pray without ceasing and give thanks in everything. The Lord never makes useless commands or ones where His grace is not supporting us to accomplish them. He told King Hezekiah that because he had prayed for deliverance from Sennacherib of Assyria, he was delivered (2 Kgs. 19:20; Is. 37:21-22). As Christians, we believe that Jesus created the world in six days, He was born of a virgin, and rose from the dead in three days, but for many of us, it takes more “blind faith” than we can muster to simply rejoice, pray, and give thanks in ALL things, than it does to believe in these absolutely miraculous events. We all need to believe in the impact and power of prayer more completely. We can never grow too much in this area. We would not be commanded to “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17), if prayer had no impact on a situation. Thus, prayer is mighty and powerful (2 Cor. 10:4)! Consider looking at the situations of life with the question in your mind of “What does the Lord Jesus want to do in and through this situation?” instead of our default setting of “Lord, please get me out of this as fast as possible. I don’t like it!” What if we could see that that trial we are going through (the loss of a loved one, a battle with health issues, the loss of material possessions…) could also be a platform for us to use our testimony of Christ’s goodness and provision to impact those around us with only small faith in the Lord, or perhaps unbelievers who have been thrown into our lives as a result of our trial? Can we turn our trials into platforms for sharing the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living or will we choose to sit, soak, and sour, drawing all those around us down too? How are we really praying for each day? Is it truly our heart’s desire to be useful to the Master in EACH and EVERY situation of life, or only the pleasant ones? Do we truly believe that God’s grace is actually enough for the situation we are in (2 Cor. 12:9-10) or are we taking emotions of unbelief and negativity into a situation where the facts of God’s Word are actually there waiting to sustain and strengthen us? As we evaluate what we need to be praying for in any situation of life, are we praying first and foremost that the Lord Jesus will be glorified in our responses and reactions? Are we also praying that the Lord will accomplish what He desires in our lives and the lives of those around us instead of praying ourselves out as quickly as possible? Maybe we have a huge blind spot (and by definition, you can’t see a blind spot!) that the Lord is trying to open our eyes to and He is trying to use the voice of a friend in our life to do this. Can we have the humility to listen, take what they have shared before the Lord, thank Him for it, and then ask Him to reveal truth in the statement(s) OR will we let it make us hard and angry, even injuring our friendships? The Lord speaks to us in His Word, but the principle of iron sharpening iron (Pr. 27:17) acknowledges the fact that one of the pieces of iron has become dull and needs sharpening. When we will not listen and let the Word of God, through the Holy Spirit’s promptings, change our hearts, He has to then begin to bring the voices of friends into our lives. This goes directly back to what we are praying about each dayàis it for the simple “I wants” of the day, or for us to be changed into the likeness of Christ more and more each day and increase in our ability to walk in the good works He has laid out for us (Eph. 2:10)? If so, then rejoicing and thankfulness to the Lord should be our response when he brings His Word or the voice of a friend into our life to help us become more conformed into His image. Let us desire more than ever to become those vessels useful to the Master, prepared for every good work (2 Tim. 2:21). Let us also realize anew the depths of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of the Lord our God, His judgments, and His ways (Rom. 11:33) as He continues to seek our fellowship through the relationship of prayer.Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much (James 5:16). We thank you all for your faithful prayers for us and the ministry of BDM! We firmly believe that apart from your prayers and the wonderful grace of Jesus, we would have a very difficult time doing what we do.
