- 2. BRIEF PRE-HISTORY: SCULPTING First sculptures are theorized to be created to provide luck for hunters and for fertility. The dawn of civilization saw sculptures being crafted after the image of gods and ancient kings (possible hoping to immortalise themselves). After the rise of Christianity in Rome sculpting took inspiration from religious icons much like other ancient civilisations (Greece, Egypt, pre-Christian Rome). The Renaissance saw the rise in notoriety of the artists behind the sculptures e.g. Michaelangelo, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Donatello 20th century sculpture was an age of experimentation. The 20th century also saw the rise of Claymation.

BRIEF HISTORY 1959 – First commercial CAD system, DAC-1, developed by IBM for General Motors. 1963 – Ivan Sutherland submitted his PhD thesis, Sketchpad: A Manmade Graphical Communications System. 1964 – William Fetter worked for Boeing and created the first model of a human body 1972 – Frederic Parke creates first 3D face model 1973 – Edwin Catmull creates digitized hand.

- A polygonal technique. Starts with a geometric primitive then refines the shape. – Often done in stages starting with a low-res mesh, refining the shape and then subdividing to smooth out the edges and add detail. Repeated until mesh contains enough detail Another polygonal technique. Built piece by piece by placing loops of polygonal faces along prominent contours and then filling any gaps between them. Used mostly in automotive and industrial modelling. Comprised of smoothly interpreted surfaces created by ‘lofting’ a mesh between two Bezier curves. Much like sculpting digital clay. Generated algorithmically 3D objects are algorithmically derived from a set of static two-dimentional images. Method of digitizing real world objects. The object is scanned, analysed and the RAW data (usually an x, y, z point cloud) is used to generate a polygonal or NURBS mesh.
