Introduction
Every generation defines and redefines the concept of leadership as it faces the challenges
of its era. Certainly, some time periods provide more material and opportunity for reflection
than others. For example, in 1862, as the fractured United States fought the Civil War, Presi-
dent Abraham Lincoln said, “The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy pres-
ent. The occasion is piled high with difficulty and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is
new, so we must think anew and act anew” (as cited in Woolley & Peters, 2015).
Part of Lincoln’s legacy stemmed from his ability to “think and act anew.” While the issues
facing our globalized world significantly differ compared to the 1800s, some themes remain
the same: When it comes to issues like CSR and sustainability, it seems necessary for brave
people to think and act anew. This chapter examines how the next generation of leaders can
begin this process. If society is to face new problems in a novel way, completing such tasks is
not easy, but it is essential.
The first nine chapters of this text illustrated the difficult and specific problems of build-
ing socially responsible and sustainable organizations. The opportunity to make the future
dramatically different from the past—and the present—presents unique leadership chal-
lenges that we address in this chapter. After reviewing the history of leadership, we describe
CSR-relevant conditions facing leaders. Finally, we describe skills that leaders must mas-
ter if they are to effectively lead in a global, environmentally stressed, and economically
fluctuating world.
10.1 Changing Concepts of Leadership
This text has discussed critical concepts of sustainability and stewardship. Both are important
terms closely related to leadership. However, the concept of leadership and our expectations
for it have evolved over time, as all concepts do. In this section, we describe how concepts of

Introduction
Every generation defines and redefines the concept of leadership as it faces the challenges
of its era. Certainly, some time periods provide more material and opportunity for reflection
than others. For example, in 1862, as the fractured United States fought the Civil War, Presi-
dent Abraham Lincoln said, “The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy pres-
ent. The occasion is piled high with difficulty and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is
new, so we must think anew and act anew” (as cited in Woolley & Peters, 2015).
Part of Lincoln’s legacy stemmed from his ability to “think and act anew.” While the issues
facing our globalized world significantly differ compared to the 1800s, some themes remain
the same: When it comes to issues like CSR and sustainability, it seems necessary for brave
people to think and act anew. This chapter examines how the next generation of leaders can
begin this process. If society is to face new problems in a novel way, completing such tasks is
not easy, but it is essential.
The first nine chapters of this text illustrated the difficult and specific problems of build-
ing socially responsible and sustainable organizations. The opportunity to make the future
dramatically different from the past—and the present—presents unique leadership chal-
lenges that we address in this chapter. After reviewing the history of leadership, we describe
CSR-relevant conditions facing leaders. Finally, we describe skills that leaders must mas-
ter if they are to effectively lead in a global, environmentally stressed, and economically
fluctuating world.
10.1 Changing Concepts of Leadership
This text has discussed critical concepts of sustainability and stewardship. Both are important
terms closely related to leadership. However, the concept of leadership and our expectations
for it have evolved over time, as all concepts do. In this section, we describe how concepts of

Section 10.1Organizational Growth
Introduction
This chapter focuses on how to attract and keep patients through understanding and meeting
their needs. The long-term success of an HCO depends on its ability to attract new patients
and turn them into loyal customers who not only return for needed services, but recommend
the HCO’s services to others. This is especially important because of the nature of the life cycle
for products and services, from their introduction to their decline. Attracting new customers
and keeping existing ones involves interacting internally and externally with patients, analyz-
ing data on current patients, and managing real and virtual interactions with patients. Manag-
ing relationships with patients helps to ensure that patients stay informed and feel connected
to the HCO through its internal and external customer relationship efforts.
10.1 Organizational Growth
Most organizations have growth as a basic goal. Growth means an increase in revenue and
a greater impact on the communities served. Growth also creates opportunities for staff to
advance and take on new responsibilities. While many activities can help an HCO grow, the
most important is the development of an effective marketing plan to provide a consistent
platform for the organization’s visibility and to brand the HCO as an attractive option for
medical services. The development of an effective marketing plan was stressed in Chapter 8
as a basic marketing need for an HCO: that is, to inform new and existing customers of the
organization’s services and to persuade them to continue using or to try using these services.
Product/Service Life Cycles
Like people, products and services have a life cycle. The term product life cycle refers to the
stages that a product or service goes through from the time it is introduced until it is taken
off the market or “dies.” The stages of the product life cycle, illustrated in Figure 10.1, usually
include the following descriptions:
• Introduction—The stage of researching, developing, and launching the product or
service.
• Growth—The stage when revenues are increasing at a fast rate.

A code of ethics is important because it clearly lays out the rules for behavior and provides the groundwork for a preemptive warning. Regardless of size, businesses count on their management staff to set a standard of ethical conduct for other employees to follow.

Advocating for your client is extremely important. In a lot of situations, you are the only person that they have to speak up and fight for them, as they may not be able to do it themselves. There was a mother, struggling to survive and only living from each paycheck and couldn’t afford health insurance and she couldn’t take her child to the dentist. Tragically, the tooth became infected, spread to the child’s brain and he died. In this situation, the counselor could help the mother find a better job, get her into a program to gain skills for a better job, and lastly, the local dept of human resources building could be contacted, to see what type of benefits the mother would be eligible for.
3. How could a career counselor do harm to his/her clients?
Boundaries are extremely important in a counseling session. Setting boundaries and limits in therapy sessions represents an ethical decision that is set by each counselor, when entering a therapeutic relationship. Physical contact with the client and self-disclosure to the client is not illegal; however, as self-disclosure is a form of boundary that is within the therapist’s theoretical approach and the touch is client’s verbally expressed need, both have to be monitored as they could be misinterpreted by the client. If the need for touch is not verbalized by the client, therapist should not assume that that what the client needs as the whole processed could be damaged. The use or lack of the use of touch and self-disclosure could be crucial in the therapeutic process. The therapists need to be aware of when and if it is appropriate to touch the client and self-disclose some of personal experiences to them; and always keep in mind of a big possibility of misinterpretation.

There is a need for clear boundaries to protect the therapeutic process and to keep the relationship professional. Boundaries protect clients from getting taken advantage of due to vulnerability. Boundaries also protect therapists from being sued by patients.

Section 10.1Organizational Growth
Introduction
This chapter focuses on how to attract and keep patients through understanding and meeting
their needs. The long-term success of an HCO depends on its ability to attract new patients
and turn them into loyal customers who not only return for needed services, but recommend
the HCO’s services to others. This is especially important because of the nature of the life cycle
for products and services, from their introduction to their decline. Attracting new customers
and keeping existing ones involves interacting internally and externally with patients, analyz-
ing data on current patients, and managing real and virtual interactions with patients. Manag-
ing relationships with patients helps to ensure that patients stay informed and feel connected
to the HCO through its internal and external customer relationship efforts.
10.1 Organizational Growth
Most organizations have growth as a basic goal. Growth means an increase in revenue and
a greater impact on the communities served. Growth also creates opportunities for staff to
advance and take on new responsibilities. While many activities can help an HCO grow, the
most important is the development of an effective marketing plan to provide a consistent
platform for the organization’s visibility and to brand the HCO as an attractive option for
medical services. The development of an effective marketing plan was stressed in Chapter 8
as a basic marketing need for an HCO: that is, to inform new and existing customers of the
organization’s services and to persuade them to continue using or to try using these services.
Product/Service Life Cycles
Like people, products and services have a life cycle. The term product life cycle refers to the
stages that a product or service goes through from the time it is introduced until it is taken
off the market or “dies.” The stages of the product life cycle, illustrated in Figure 10.1, usually
include the following descriptions:
• Introduction—The stage of researching, developing, and launching the product or
service.
• Growth—The stage when revenues are increasing at a fast rate.

A code of ethics is important because it clearly lays out the rules for behavior and provides the groundwork for a preemptive warning. Regardless of size, businesses count on their management staff to set a standard of ethical conduct for other employees to follow.

Advocating for your client is extremely important. In a lot of situations, you are the only person that they have to speak up and fight for them, as they may not be able to do it themselves. An example where this would be a case that was in Maryland. There was a mother, struggling to survive and only living from each paycheck and couldn’t afford health insurance and she couldn’t take her child to the dentist. Tragically, the tooth became infected, spread to the child’s brain and he died. In this situation, the counselor could help the mother find a better job, get her into a program to gain skills for a better job, and lastly, the local dept of human resources building could be contacted, to see what type of benefits the mother would be eligible for.
3. How could a career counselor do harm to his/her clients?
Boundaries are extremely important in a counseling session. Setting boundaries and limits in therapy sessions represents an ethical decision that is set by each counselor, when entering a therapeutic relationship. Physical contact with the client and self-disclosure to the client is not illegal; however, as self-disclosure is a form of boundary that is within the therapist’s theoretical approach and the touch is client’s verbally expressed need, both have to be monitored as they could be misinterpreted by the client. If the need for touch is not verbalized by the client, therapist should not assume that that what the client needs as the whole processed could be damaged. The use or lack of the use of touch and self-disclosure could be crucial in the therapeutic process. The therapists need to be aware of when and if it is appropriate to touch the client and self-disclose some of personal experiences to them; and always keep in mind of a big possibility of misinterpretation.

There is a need for clear boundaries to protect the therapeutic process and to keep the relationship professional. Boundaries protect clients from getting taken advantage of due to vulnerability. Boundaries also protect therapists from being sued by patients.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
