Abstract: Bicknell’s Thrush is among the Nearctic-Neotropical migrants of highest conservation priority in North America. Its rarity (estimated global population of < 50,000 individuals), restricted breeding and winter distributions, habitat specialization, and vulnerability to multiple rangewide threats are compounded by incomplete knowledge about its overall status. The species exhibits a complex mating system and a highly skewed breeding adult sex ratio. Sexual habitat segregation may occur in winter, and females appear to be limited at some point in the annual cycle. Recent population trend data show conflicting results, with sharply declining populations in Maritime Canada and stable or slightly increasing trends in the U.S. On the species’ Greater Antillean wintering grounds, where an estimated 90% of the global population occurs on Hispaniola, loss of forested habitats has been severe and is ongoing. The International Bicknell’s Thrush Conservation Group (IBTCG) formed in 2007 to develop and implement a scientifically-based conservation action plan for the species. We will present an overview of the conservation challenges facing Bicknell’s Thrush, highlight the IBTCG’s primary goals and recommendations, and assess the prospects for this at-risk species.

Abstract: Bicknell’s Thrush is among the Nearctic-Neotropical migrants of highest conservation priority in North America. Its rarity (estimated global population of < 50,000 individuals), restricted breeding and winter distributions, habitat specialization, and vulnerability to multiple rangewide threats are compounded by incomplete knowledge about its overall status. The species exhibits a complex mating system and a highly skewed breeding adult sex ratio. Sexual habitat segregation may occur in winter, and females appear to be limited at some point in the annual cycle. Recent population trend data show conflicting results, with sharply declining populations in Maritime Canada and stable or slightly increasing trends in the U.S. On the species’ Greater Antillean wintering grounds, where an estimated 90% of the global population occurs on Hispaniola, loss of forested habitats has been severe and is ongoing. The International Bicknell’s Thrush Conservation Group (IBTCG) formed in 2007 to develop and implement a scientifically-based conservation action plan for the species. We will present an overview of the conservation challenges facing Bicknell’s Thrush, highlight the IBTCG’s primary goals and recommendations, and assess the prospects for this at-risk species.

This standard will better protect mussels and other aquatic life in Missouri waters, though it may apply broadly across the state given mussels' widespread historical distribution. The government has two goals: 1) to protect the overall biodiversity and sustainability of the island ecosystem, and 2) to protect the endemic primates that live in the forests on the island. The primates have also become a well-known attraction for ecotourists from around the world. Village forest management as a way to protect biodiversity in Tanzania
1) Village Forest Reserves (VFRs) in Tanzania's East Usambara Mountains support greater plant and tree species diversity compared to other non-reserved land uses like agriculture, but have lower diversity than strictly protected forests.
2) VFRs contain important bird species, including some Eastern Arc endemics and near-endemics, though most endangered species are only found in other habitat types.
3) Continued management of VFRs is at risk due to dependence on external funding and incentives, and small direct economic benefits provided to local communities so far. Increased benefits through payments for ecosystem services could help improve viability.
Habitat Loss and Fragmentation
Habitat loss and fragmentation have significantly impacted ecosystems in Southern Ontario. Originally containing extensive forests, the landscape is now dominated by human settlements, farmland, and transportation routes as natural areas have been cleared and divided into smaller parcels. The Coon Creek Watershed District Board held a hearing to determine if an obstruction in County Ditch 58-6 should be removed. The ditch experiences flooding due to an undersized culvert on Polk Street installed in 1964-1970. Three properties are affected by the flooding. The Board considered inspection reports from 2011 showing flooding, as well as safety and flood damage concerns from the landowners. Engineers recommended replacing the culvert with a longer, larger diameter culvert to reduce flooding and safety issues. Cost estimates were provided and two contractors provided quotes for the work.

3) Drainage demands are expected to decrease slightly as drainage dependent lands decrease by 642 acres. Maintenance standards for drainage systems will need reevaluation and inspection of critical reaches will be important.

The document discusses trends in wetland loss and implications for management. Over 5,137 acres of wetlands have been lost due to drying of the landscape. An additional 8,375 acres, or 52% of wetlands, have lost hydroperiods classified as temporarily flooded or saturated. The loss of hydrology and wetland functions implies a probable permanent loss of 52% of wetland stock and potential removal from 60-80% of the county due to land subsidence and hydrophobic soils. Its mission is to manage groundwater and surface water, maintain hydrologic balance, prevent property damage, protect water quality, and provide for public safety, enjoyment, and resource preservation and enhancement through programs in administration, development regulation, operations and maintenance, planning, information/education, and research/monitoring. The District carries out its business through budgets, staff, land management, provision of services, contracts, cooperation, and collaborative efforts.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
