5. Ridesharing – the Missing Rural Link
True ridesharing or carpooling is when people travel
together based on a common origin, destination and
share costs.
Carpool drivers are simply sharing their journey with
passengers going their way.
Ridehailing (Uber and Lyft) are online taxi services with
for-profit drivers. Ridehailing has not yet come to
many rural communities .
6. What does a rideshare platform do?
User enters origin, destination and travel preferences
System returns a list of available travel options
For carpooling, it presents a list of potential carpool matches – an online bulletin board.
New carpooling technology lets users post a trip and passengers can request a ride, book the
trip, pay in app and track their ride in real-time.
Similarly passengers can post a ride request and drivers can search to offer rides.
