Nick Craig is a 25-year-old Irish national currently located in London. He has a background in sailing competitively, coaching, and event organizing. He obtained an IB Diploma and BA in history and philosophy from Trinity College Dublin. While in college, he developed interests in media production and sustainability. After graduating, he co-founded a business marketing electric vehicles and lobbied the government to support electric car development. He then proposed and did feasibility work for an audio tour business in Dublin using GPS-enabled vehicles, but the project did not launch. Currently, Nick is pursuing an MSc and working in media production and marketing.
Industrialization first began in England and spread throughout Europe and the United States. While some debate its overall impact, industrialization dramatically improved life in 1800s England by expanding education, driving technological progress and invention, and raising living standards. More people gained access to education to meet the growing need for skilled factory workers. New machines and production methods increased industrial output and national wealth. Inventions like the telephone and light bulb not only benefited England at the time but have continued supporting modern societies.

This document provides an overview of the evolution of Lean/Toyota Production System (TPS) from 1987 to present day. It discusses how Lean started within the automotive industry based on TPS principles at Toyota and has since expanded to other industries. It also examines how Toyota Business Practices were developed to implement the Toyota Way and create a "learning organization" through management direction, problem solving methodology, on-the-job training, and rapid Plan-Do-Check-Act cycles. The document emphasizes breaking down stereotypes around problems and setting clear targets and expectations for organizations.
This document contains information about Group -7 which includes 5 students from MACFAST COLLEGE THIRUVALLA. It also contains their responses to questions regarding 3M's history of innovation and culture, how innovation was institutionalized, advantages and disadvantages of 3M's organization structure, and explanations for their international success. Key details include 3M being founded in 1902, hiring their first scientist in 1907, allowing 15% of employee time for personal projects, establishing a central research laboratory in 1937, and transforming to a more integrated network of businesses with a focus on global scale and local differences.
This document discusses research on the impact of an anchor firm disruption on innovation clusters and regional labor markets. Specifically, it examines what happened in Waterloo, Canada's technology cluster after BlackBerry, the region's largest employer, struggled and downsized. The research uses novel data from professional social media platforms to track the career paths and mobility of former BlackBerry employees. It finds that while some became entrepreneurs in the local startup ecosystem, many talent remained in the region and were redeployed elsewhere in the regional economy, demonstrating the cluster's resilience. The document concludes with implications for policymakers regarding supporting institutions that enhance cluster dynamism and resilience during economic shocks.

It takes two to tango - why tech and business succeed or fail together v4.1 b...Luca Minudel
In this session, we will discuss how to achieve real technical excellence that matters to the Business, how to build trust between Business and Tech, and how Business can react quickly and beat the competition with help from Tech. After many years in professional software development, we experienced the impact of Business’ decisions on Tech, the importance of technical excellence for the Business, and the role of Software Craftsmanship/Craftswomenship in achieving technical excellence.
We learned that Tech is an enabler for the Business, that Business is a key stakeholder, that mastery in practices such as Software Craftsmanship/Craftswomenship leads to technical excellence that really matters. Then, in an unexpected turn of events, we learned these assumptions were flawed, it was much more than that.

He discussed trends in pharmaceutical R&D including rising costs of drug development and declining productivity. He noted significant unmet medical needs in areas like oncology, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Perry also talked about how venture capital like Bay City Capital is fueling innovation by translating academic research into potential drugs and funding their development through commercialization. Yissum is one of the top 15 technology transfer companies in the world, with over 6,100 patents and 1,750 inventions licensed over 46 years. It works to commercialize research from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and affiliated hospitals. Yissum is taking a more active role in technology transfer by creating funding platforms for projects at all stages of development and securing different funding opportunities. This helps bridge the "valley of death" between academic research and commercialization. New business models under consideration include a royalty-based funding model, utilizing Yissum's holdings in spin-off companies through IPO, and establishing an incubator to jointly invest and manage multiple early-stage projects.
Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is a vital security measure adopted by financial institutions and payment service providers. Its core purpose is to confirm that the recipient’s name matches the information provided by the sender during a banking transaction, ensuring that funds are transferred to the correct payment account.
Confirmation of Payee was built to tackle the increasing numbers of APP Fraud and in the landscape of UK banking, the spectre of APP fraud looms large. In 2022, over £1.2 billion was stolen by fraudsters through authorised and unauthorised fraud, equivalent to more than £2,300 every minute. This statistic emphasises the urgent need for robust security measures like CoP. While over £1.2 billion was stolen through fraud in 2022, there was an eight per cent reduction compared to 2021 which highlights the positive outcomes obtained from the implementation of Confirmation of Payee. The number of fraud cases across the UK also decreased by four per cent to nearly three million cases during the same period; latest statistics from UK Finance.
In essence, Confirmation of Payee plays a pivotal role in digital banking, guaranteeing the flawless execution of banking transactions. It stands as a guardian against fraud and misallocation, demonstrating the commitment of financial institutions to safeguard their clients’ assets. The next time you engage in a banking transaction, remember the invaluable role of CoP in ensuring the security of your financial interests.

A toxic combination of 15 years of low growth, and four decades of high inequality, has left Britain poorer and falling behind its peers. Productivity growth is weak and public investment is low, while wages today are no higher than they were before the financial crisis. Britain needs a new economic strategy to lift itself out of stagnation.
Scotland is in many ways a microcosm of this challenge. It has become a hub for creative industries, is home to several world-class universities and a thriving community of businesses – strengths that need to be harness and leveraged. But it also has high levels of deprivation, with homelessness reaching a record high and nearly half a million people living in very deep poverty last year. Scotland won’t be truly thriving unless it finds ways to ensure that all its inhabitants benefit from growth and investment. This is the central challenge facing policy makers both in Holyrood and Westminster.
What should a new national economic strategy for Scotland include? What would the pursuit of stronger economic growth mean for local, national and UK-wide policy makers? How will economic change affect the jobs we do, the places we live and the businesses we work for? And what are the prospects for cities like Glasgow, and nations like Scotland, in rising to these challenges?
