The document discusses how Jesus called ordinary people to follow him, such as fishermen Simon and Andrew, and how God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. It provides several examples from the Bible of how Jesus cared for ordinary people and transformed them, such as turning water into wine for a wedding and feeding large crowds. The overall message is that God values all people equally regardless of status, and everyone has the potential to become citizens of heaven through accepting Jesus as their savior.

BLC Sermon - That awkward moment when you realize Jesus called you and I - 20...Leigh Wong
Sermon based on Lectionary readings for the 3rd Sunday in Epiphany: Isaiah 9:1-4; 1 Corinthians 1:10-18; and Matthew 4:12-23.
The main idea was to explore the epiphany of how God has selected us to be His emissaries/ambassadors and what that means for us as a community of faith.

This is a study of Jesus as the son of man. He made this title the main one he used for Himself, and so it has a significance that we often do not grasp.
This is a study of Jesus being a pleasing aroma. He was a perfume of joy to believers, but an odor of death to unbelievers. He was a sweet smelling sacrifice to His Father. Jesus smelled good to all but the lost.
My definition of aliens is this: Aliens are non human intelligent beings who can interact with human beings. The Bible reveals at least 7 different such beings.

This class will examine the ways we can know who Jesus is by discussing the Doctrine of the Bible & Revelation. It will further develop the concepts of the origin of our mission and praxis as disciples of Jesus by looking at Jesus (Christology), His Mission/Our Mission (Missiology), & How this mission can be accomplished (Ecclesiology).
One of the most precious gifts heaven be-
stows on the earth is a man with a message for
his fellows. A man sent to deliver tidings of
great joy, to accjuaint us with God's thoughts
and purposes about us, to pour light into our
darkness, and to fill the heart with a song of
gladness — what greater boon could be ours,
or should be more acceptable? Such a gift
ranks above every earthly good, ranks next to
God 's ' ' unspeakable gift ' ' with which indeed
it is closely associated. And such men do now
and then appear; genuine messengers from
God, envoys extraordinary from the court of
heaven.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

2. KEY TEXT
Mark 1:16-18
As Jesus walked beside the Sea of
Galilee, he saw Simon and his
brother Andrew casting a net into
the lake, for they were fishermen.
"Come, follow me," Jesus said,
"and I will make you fishers of
men."
At once they left their nets and
followed him.
3. “For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not
many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the
world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to
put to shame the things which are mighty”
(1 Corinthians 1:26-27)
A. Jesus and the “ordinary”.
Jesus as example of an “ordinary” person.
Working with “ordinary” people.
Transforming the “common”.
B. “Ordinary” people in the eyes of God.
C. Equality among men.
4. Jesus could have chosen His
birthplace. Nevertheless,
He did not choose to be
born in a wealthy or
influential home.
His birthplace:
“And she brought forth her
firstborn Son, and wrapped
Him in swaddling cloths, and
laid Him in a manger,
because there was no room
for them in the inn”
(Luke 2:7)
His socioeconomic status:
“and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the
law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young
pigeons” (Luke 2:24)
“And if she is not able to bring a lamb, then she may
bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons…” (Leviticus 12:8 f.p.)
The “neighborhood”
where he grew up:
“And Nathanael said to him, “Can
anything good come out of Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.””
(John 1:46)
5. “The world’s Redeemer
was the son of poor
parents, and when in His
infancy He was
presented in the temple,
His mother could bring
only the offering
appointed for the poor,—
a pair of turtledoves or
two young pigeons. He
was the most precious
gift of heaven to our
world, a gift above all
computation, yet it could
be acknowledged only by
the smallest offering.
Our Saviour, during all
His sojourn on earth,
shared the lot of the
poor and lowly. Self-
denial and sacrifice
characterized His life”
E.G.W. (Counsels on Stewardship, cp. 33, pg. 160)
6. Jesus particularly worked among the “ordinary”
people. He cared for their needs.
His first miracle was to
get a just married couple
out of a mess. He
changed 500 liters (130
gallons) of water into
wine (John 2:1-11)
He had sympathy of the crowd that followed Him. He
supplied food with just some loaves and fishes twice
(Matthew 16:9-10)
Jesus usually reached people that were considered to
be “common” or “ordinary”. They weren’t self-
sufficient and they were ready to entrust God with
their success.
7. “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and
John, and perceived that they were uneducated
and untrained men, they marveled. And they
realized that they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13)
Peter was an “ordinary” person. He was a fisherman
that made a living with the fruits of his labor.
Peter was transformed from an “ordinary” man to a great
preacher. He was used by God to spread the Gospel among
Jews and Gentiles all over the world.
God can transform you as he transformed Peter.
1. He realized he was unworthy, so
he knelt down at the feet of Jesus
and followed Him (Luke 5:1-11)
2. He let the Holy Spirit lead him
(Matthew 16:13-17)
3. He sincerely repented when he
sinned (Matthew 26:75)
How was he transformed?
8. Does God value people?
“Since you were precious in
My sight, you have been
honored, and I have loved
you” (Isaiah 43:4 f.p.)
“It is through the cross alone that we can
estimate the worth of the human soul. Such is
the value of men for whom Christ died that the
Father is satisfied with the infinite price
which He pays for the salvation of man in
yielding up His own Son to die for their
redemption. What wisdom, mercy, and love in
its fullness are here manifested! The worth of
man is known only by going to Calvary. In the
mystery of the cross of Christ we can place an
estimate upon man”
E.G.W. (Lift Him Up, August 16)
9. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is
neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28)
It is important to understand that
every person is worthy before God
(1 Peter 1:17)
So we must not excessively despise
or praise anyone.
Rich and poor, men and women,
native and foreign, different races…
we all are potential citizens of
Heaven.
We must tell to everyone that
Jesus is their Savior.
10. “It is not the position, not the finite wisdom, not the
qualifications, not the endowments of any person that makes
him rank high in the esteem of God. The intellect, the reason,
the talents of men, are the gifts of God to be employed to His
glory, for the upbuilding of His eternal kingdom. It is the
spiritual and moral character that is of value in the sight of
Heaven, and that will survive the grave and be made glorious
with immortality for the endless ages of eternity. Worldly
royalty so highly honored by men will never come forth from
the sepulcher into which it enters. Riches, honor, the wisdom
of men that have served the purposes of the enemy, can bring
to their possessors no inheritance, no honor, no position of
trust in the world which is to come. Only those who have
appreciated the grace of Christ, which has made them heirs of
God and joint heirs with Jesus, will rise from the grave
bearing the image of their Redeemer”
E.G.W. (Selected Messages, vol. 1, cp. 36, pg. 258)
