Water SUM
• Project (@WaterSUM) promotes the more sustainable use of water resources
in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region
(http://www.watersum.rec.org/).
• The overall objective of this project is to promote and enhance sustainability
of managing water resources in beneficiary countries and MENA region to
reduce the downward spiral of poverty, biodiversity loss and environmental
degradation
• Main components: Component 1. Water Resources Management Good
Practices and Knowledge Transfer (Water POrT) and Component 2. Water and
Security (WaSe)
• Beneficiary countries are Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt in the
North Africa Beneficiary countries and Lebanon, Jordan and Syria in the
Middle East region. Selected focal countries are Jordan and Tunisia.
• WaSe focus countries: Jordan and Tunisia
• Funding of 6 MEUR from Sida for 2014-2017

WaSe component
• Objective: to promote a comprehensive and integrated approach to water
security and ecosystem services for sustainable development of selected 8
self-governing territories:
• 4 municipalities in Jordan (Ajloun , Jarash, Karak, Salt) and
• 4 delegations in Tunisia (Nefza, Bir Mechergua, Sidi Ali Ben Aoun, Matmata)
• Efforts to combat water scarcity, reduce threat of conflicts and increase
overall human well-being within the wider context of ensuring regional
pace and stability.
• Results:
1. Process of introduction and drafting Local Water Security Action Plan
(LWSAP) initiated and supported in 80 percent of target municipalities
2. Partner communities work jointly towards sustainable development
3. Local environmental governance in partner countries benefiting from Local
Water Security Action Plan concept
