Jasmonate is a lipid-based plant hormone that regulates growth, photosynthesis, and reproduction. It was first isolated from jasmine oil and leads to the expression of genes involved in wound response, producing defense molecules in tomatoes. Jasmonate also plays a role in leaf senescence and cell death by interacting with kinases and transcription factors related to senescence and inducing reactive oxygen species that damage mitochondria membranes. One of jasmonate's earliest observed effects was inhibiting root growth, though the mechanism is still unknown. Jasmonate can both inhibit the germination of nondormant seeds and stimulate the germination of dormant seeds.
