FOX-Family Introduction
With the FOX-Family, ABB offers a
comprehensive portfolio of communication
equipments: hardened, tailored and type-tested
for Utility applications in harsh environments.
With its latest extensions, the FOX-Family covers
the full range from Access-multiplexers with
integrated Teleprotection-Interfaces up to high
capacity fiber optic SDH / WDM solutions for
Edge- and Core-Networks.
FOX stands for continuity and investment
protection. Thousands of FOX-U with a capacity
of up to 8 Mbps have been in operation since
decades. Its backward compatible successor
FOX515 serves Access- and Transport-functions
up to STM-1. Its huge installed base is proof
of perfect fit of utility requirements. With the
FOX515X, the capacity of both types can be
smoothly extended up to STM-16 without the
need for much extra space. For higher port-
densities and STM-64 / WDM applications,
FOX515T forms the high end solution.
The FOX-family supports all latest standards for
Ethernet / Gigabit-Ethernet over SDH. It offers
unseen modularity and granularity in terms of
traffic engineering and cost-optimization. Built in
L2–switching and L3-routing features allow omit-
ting external Ethernet / IP-equipment or existing
devices can be interconnected efficiently.
With FOXMAN, ABB offers an attractive SNMP /
CORBA based Network Management System
that allows managing all devices of the FOX-
Family. Its open architecture offers scalability
and allows easy north- & southbound integration.
Graphical network representation and Point &
Click operation make the FOXMAN the ideal
solution for managing TDM- & Ethernet-Services
at the Access- and Transport level.

FOX515M
the Mini with the strong interface mix
Applications & Migration Scenarios
Existing equipments remain in use but are inter-
connected via a STM-16 FOX515T–backbone.
Ring 2 is upgraded to STM-4.
In smaller FOX-U sites of Ring 3, a FOX515X
STM-1 solution is more appropriate.
Three additional local sites with PABX & LAN
requirements (e.g. for SCADA and IT) are ser-
ved via low-cost FOX515M.
All devices can easily be managed by FOXMAN.
The combination of FOX-devices allows choosing cost-
optimized set-ups with any-to-any communication and
guaranteed bandwidth for teleprotection, legacy-, PDH-
and LAN-services.
